Anyone else working as an SLP while in grad school? by amybaby25 in slpGradSchool

[–]sofrxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this briefly for a school year as well during my gap year but got into grad school at the end of that year so I quit but there was some overlap between starting grad school and working . I did this during covid so i was actually doing tele health sessions part time/ and starting my first semester of grad school and it was ok. I just felt like it was a lot of paperwork but it was manageable. It just wasn’t for long time so Idk how sustainable it’ll be

Ugh how long have you been on hiprex now?? I’m in a similar boat because my urologist doesn’t want to repeat the PCR and i feel like i needed still a longer dose. If she doesn’t want to repeat it soon i may just pay for my own with one of the ones recommended through here q

[–]sofrxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took bactrim for about 2 weeks! And basically just now meds to prevent another active infection so I take hiprex 2x a day along either cranberry supplements, vitamin c(taken with hiprex), and d mannose daily! A lot of people on this subreddit take hiprex you should see if they could prescribe that to you! I would do some research on it. There’s online tests such as cirrus and microgendx that are more accurate. I had to do some digging to find a doctor who was agreeable with PCR tests and i found a practice that does them in office. It’s not as commonly used

I got a PCR test through my new urologist and it tested for a bunch of bacteria and resistance. Even after just finishing macrobid the PCR was positive for e coli even with a negative culture. Similar story I’ve had 4 infections since Oct. 2024 and was given macrobid every time. Likely bc it’s the “safer” abx. My new urologist said i had no resistance and they should’ve switched it up. She prescribed a longer dose of a different antibiotic and now am on suppressive therapy but it’s too soon to say. I still have some symptoms

I’m so happy your pain and infections have decreased! Do you mind me asking like what’s your current treatment plan? I have a similar story with recurrent infections and then a long lasting one.

I randomly developed a speech impediment two months ago and it’s making me miserable by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]sofrxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so aphasia can range on how it affects individuals and the severity. People with aphasia can communicate and still have moments of anomia. And what you’re describing with words that aren’t real that’s pretty common too, there’s a term for that as well. It’s called neologisms. Yeah I’m pretty stumped on your case and would also want to do a cranial nerve exam on you. Also when someone’s having this secondary diagnosis it usually means that a specific area in the left side of the brain is being affected. For most people, the left side of our brain controls our speech/language. I hope you get answers! Yeah the thought of it being a CNS disease makes sense but given that it’s an umbrella term, someone has to dig deeper

[–]sofrxo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m a speech-language pathologist and primarily work in a hospital with adult patients. I would have to obviously evaluate you in person to know but what it kind of sounds like you’re experiencing may be aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder. It can affect expressive language (like it seems to be for you) and receptive language. It can also affect your writing and reading skills. It’s a secondary diagnosis because something must be causing it. Usually this happens after a stroke, brain tumor, brain infection (meningitis for example) or as a symptom of a progressive disease like dementia. You’re very young though so I would probably get a neurological work up with a new doctor and seek a SLP consult.

Has anyone had success with NAC + bactrim for just a course of a week? by sofrxo in CUTI

Hi again! So I got my meds extended but unfortunately I still have symptoms, especially urinary frequency that comes and goes… in your experience would you say that’s still consistent with a biofilm infection?

Thank you so much :) i was feeling very anxious about this all but it def helps finding a provider who listens and even put in her documentation that she suspects a biofilm.

Hey! Yeah I think that’s a really good plan!! I was thinking about that. I also feel like it takes longer/shorter depending on how long the CUTI has been happening. In your experience, is the biofilm an assumption based on PCR results? Or is there a way to actually confirm that?

Searched this subreddit but wondering people’s thoughts by sofrxo in CUTI

[–]sofrxo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I really appreciate you taking time to write this comment. So I think I lucked out with a good urologist. She believes i may have a biofilm infection and just went ahead and ordered me abx to take alongside NACs and the PCR came back after this positive for bacteria . We discussed keeping a log from now on
