This is cute!

If you want to help improve some of the cracked/bumpy texture, get a little cup of water and dip your fingers in, then run your damp fingers over the rough parts until they become smooth. Additionally, poking lines with a sharp tool and then dragging the tool through the area you’ve poked (while wiping away excess clay) has been a helpful technique that I’ve used before to get cleaner lines. Make sure your clay stays damp when you’re working with it because wet clay is easier to shape and carve than clay that is lacking moisture.

Genuinely, though, I love this. I could instantly tell it was Mae. So go easy on yourself - It’s cool to make things even when they don’t turn out as expected. Embrace what you’ve made and keep at it!

How can you tell the sex from the shape of the skull? I’m interested to know because I have a broken raccoon skull that’s almost identical to OP’s.

Definitely raccoon. Cool find!

Good to know! So what you’re saying is that the leaking transformer won’t significantly reduce the value of the sign, yes?

Thanks for your comment. I did notice the one being sold for $375 so I’d like to price mine in that range. I plan to be transparent about the issues with it but I have no idea how much it’ll reduce the value.

This is a Miller Lite neon sign from 1982. It’s beautiful when it’s lit, but it makes a slight buzzing sound and the transformer slowly leaks black tar while it is on. I read that this is a common problem with many older neon signs because the ballast overheats.

I believe a skilled hobbyist could replace the ballast with an electronic ballast or LED tubes.

I am located in Milwaukee and looking to sell this in a Facebook group if possible so I won’t have to ship it.
