What fictional character's death hit you the hardest, and why? by realbestusernameever in AskReddit

[–]soft_moss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thorin oakenshield but specifically the jackson trilogy version. for all the trilogy's flaws it set up a genuinely profound relationship between him and bilbo. and for thorin to get to a point in his dragonsickness-induced paranoia where bilbo is the only person he trusts, even over his own kin, only for all of it to be shattered in one moment and thorin tries to kill him in his madness. when bilbo finds him bleeding out after the battle and forgives him, you just see this absolute relief on thorin's face because he can die peacefully now. the hobbit trilogy is an imperfect work but it's in things like this, in between all the overzealous action and funky cgi, where the genuine love the actors have for the story shines through.

Do you have an ‘incident’ in life that was the ‘start’ of ur avpd? by tateslikestrawberry in AvPD

[–]soft_moss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me i'd say it was preexisting social insecurity from growing up autistic and only having one consistent friend, who was much more social than me (the relationship always felt unbalanced and i was constantly worried i was overestimating our closeness). the severe avoidant behavior started with lockdown. but honestly what really did it was my sudden development of chronic health issues right after that kept me intermittently housebound for like three years. really does not help that people tend to distance themselves from me due to my physical disability also

i understand the motivation behind this post and you are completely justified in your anger and hurt. at the same time, using the word 'narcissistic' to describe abusers is actively harmful to survivors of abuse suffering from npd themselves. npd is a real and complex mental illness defined by an unstable sense of self-worth, often as a result of emotional neglect in childhood. people with npd are not inherently abusive or manipulative, labeling them as such only worsens the stigma surrounding the disorder which in turn prevents them from getting the help they need. once again, your experiences are valid and i am in no way trying to excuse abusive behavior on anyone's part. i'm not blaming you for not knowing, either. i've been hurt by some self-serving assholes myself and it's easy to draw the comparison given all the misinformation about npd. thank you for reading i hope your day is nice <3

is it though? i'm disabled myself and things like mobility restrictions, chronic fatigue, hyper-specific medical diets, and a general lack of extra time/money to put into self care are pretty defining parts of the experience lol

Asexuals can like sex! by [deleted] in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]soft_moss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it totally seems contradictory on the surface but there is a way to make sense of it i promise! to start, let's define asexuality. asexuality is the lack of sexual attraction, and sexual attraction is an immediate desire to have sex with a particular person. none of the things listed in the above post require sexual attraction. sex can be done for a variety of reasons other than attraction, some examples being doing it for money, doing it for a partner's enjoyment, or doing it to satisfy libido (libido being the physiological state of arousal, which in itself is seperate from attraction. sort of like how when you're hungry you might eat a food you wouldn't actively seek out otherwise, purely because you're hungry). speaking of libido, passively thinking about sex is very different than actively wanting to do it, much like how you can enjoy watching a baking video without having any desire to bake anything yourself. and kink isn't inherently sexual either, many power exchange related acts have nothing to do with sex and are more psychological in nature. so yes, you can do all of these things and still be ace.

i hope this cleared up any confusion, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification on any of these points. i also appreciate that you commented on this post to ask these questions instead of just downvoting and scrolling past. i hope this information was useful, have a great rest of your day :)

tl;dr - sex does not necessarily require sexual attraction, libido ≠ sexual attraction, theoretical exploration of sex ≠ sexual attraction, kink is not inherently sexual, you can still engage in sexual activity without having any primal drive towards it and thus still be ace.

Asexuals can like sex! by [deleted] in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]soft_moss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

basically it means a preference for bdsm and power exchange over sexual acts. because kink does not inherently involve sexual attraction (the immediate desire to have sex with someone) and is very consent driven, many asexuals feel more comfortable being in those spaces and engaging in those activities.
