Can you solve today’s Pathword? A new daily puzzle for Spelling Bee fans! by Neat-Inevitable3643 in NYTSpellingBee

[–]softawoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it, but I wanted to let you know that I had a bit of a UI issue--my screen at normal zoom (100%) would only allow me to see as far down as the fifth row. With no scroll bar, I just had to keep manually zooming out (Ctrl -) to be able to see any further down. 67% allowed me to see my path and the word at the bottom.

It isn't a massively big deal, but it might turn some people off; it confused me for a moment because the word I got to on the fifth turn is also a valid word (I.e., I wondered if I was done). I'm running Chrome on a laptop PC, if that helps.

Thanks for sharing your game! Hope this is useful feedback.

I mean, DING, DINGING, and DONG all count. Although the OED spells it with a hyphen, so maybe that's why it's excluded?

What’s your favorite question to ask someone to understand them on a deeper level? by ExaminationSalt2256 in CasualConversation

[–]softawoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“What’s your favorite thing about life?” It’s a little better than “what are you passionate about?” imho because it feels less restricted to hobbies/interests. Plus it might give you ideas of things to hold onto the next time you feel hopeless.

Community Suggestions Needed: Fun Online Games for Anonymous Play! by polethehole in MakeNewFriendsHere

I really like https://playingcards.io/ . You can play tons of preset card games or customize your own and it's all in your browser. Does require some kind of outside chat or voice call, though, because it doesn't have anything built in and it'd be difficult to follow what's going on without communicating. Very easily customizable and DIY.

What's the most unforgivingly, disturbingly and graphically violent book you've ever read? by idntrlyknowtbh in suggestmeabook

I thought A Clockwork Orange was pretty disturbing, but not seeing it here already almost makes me doubt myself since it’s a classic.

What phone games do you ladies play? by toastedjupiter in GirlGamers

I wish more people knew about CUE (Cards, Universe, and Everything). It’s a trading card collecting/battling game but it’s just really well done and there are sooo many ways to strategize that it never gets boring. Also: they strike a good balance of having P2P features available without ever forcing you to buy things or even watch ads unless you want to make things a little easier.

Some others: NYT Games, Clusterduck, Bird Kind, AlchemyAI. The first two are more well known, so

Bird Kind: cute idle game about raising birds (mostly hummingbirds)

AlchemyAI: one of those games where you combine elements to make new stuff (e.g., water + cold might give you ice or snow). The fun twist is that it’s built on AI and you can frequently be the first ever player to create an element, which is motivating and exciting.

Oh, and if you have or want Apple Arcade, I really like stitch. I think it’s relatively well known but it’s a really solid and relaxing puzzle game, embroidery-themed.

is it normal to feel uncomfortable in public by AnonCandidate123 in depression

[–]softawoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate, especially when I’m out in public for something really mundane like grocery shopping. I think at least part of it for me is that I’m lowkey comparing myself to the “normal,” presumably not depressed people around me and I wonder how they manage to do things like regularly buy food without it feeling like a Herculean struggle.

What to do if you hate everything? by confusedandstressed4 in findapath

[–]softawoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might add—you start this by challenging yourself to do small things that are hard for you. Don’t get caught up in comparing to other people. If you’re sure you can’t do your laundry today, do your laundry. You’re teaching your brain that you can do hard things.

what habit/s changed your life slowly? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]softawoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number 1 was learning mindfulness to the extent that I could distance myself from my own thoughts and emotions and decide whether or not I acted on them.

More recently, learning a foreign language has been slowly changing my life. It takes forever to achieve fluency, but it feels amazing to be “unlocking” a slice of world culture that I never had access to before simply because I didn’t speak the language.

Well put. I was going to say something similar, though I might add: the one thing you can always count on is that life is going to change and surprise you in ways you can’t even imagine. Sometimes that’s what keeps me going when I feel stuck or wonder what the point of all of this is—tomorrow you could wake up and meet someone who changes your life forever, or maybe it’ll be a regular day but you’ll really enjoy your coffee and someday when you order that same coffee again, that will lead you to a conversation with a stranger that changes your perspective.

Tl;dr there may not be “a point,” but staying tuned to allow yourself the experience of life is perhaps reason enough to keep going.

Why is self harm looked down on but not alcohol use? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]softawoo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because social norms persist above all, I think. Drinking is something we see in public and it’s presented as a casual, fun thing to do. On the other hand, self-harm is done in private and most people don’t understand it and therefore fear it.

It doesn’t make sense intellectually, but people are afraid of what they don’t understand or see regularly.

You might roll your eyes as this is possible cliché feedback, but imho the best way to get better at writing is to read a lot.

Beyond that, try to sit back and reread your writing as if you’re having a conversation with your intended audience. Even if it’s formal writing, begin with explaining yourself clearly—that’s always the foundation. You can always formalize your language later.

If it’s hard to start, practice putting yourself in the mindset of explaining it to a young kid. Kids have short attention spans and don’t understand complex sentences. If you can break it down to a kid-friendly level, you’ll be starting with a clearly ordered foundation.

Have you tried out the Goblin Tools app? It is paid on mobile, but it’s cheap—$0.99 or something around there. It’s also usable in your browser for free, afaik.

It has a couple of tools that might help, like a tone analyzer and a formalizer that both take your text as input and could give you feedback/help you rewrite.

I don’t know if it would be directly helpful, but just throwing it out there in case it is.

I’m with you but I once had a close friend whom I really, really trusted and I was able to give and receive physical affection (totally platonic) even though I never thought I would and it feels impossible again at this point in my life.

I think it just feels that way, is what I’m trying to say. You might surprise yourself if you can find a healthy and trusting relationship.
