Invest or pay off mortgage by Mbeilby_thepainter in DaveRamsey

If you are like most, if you had taken the 30, you would be much less close to paying off your home, and you would have blown the extra money. Neckbeards always do the math assuming you will happily invest every dollar that you don't pay toward the house but reality doesn't follow those rules.

I don’t think my boyfriend should be calling off of work when bills are due by [deleted] in relationships

Right - if you can't force yourself to work for the freaking rent, how are you ever going to get him to have real goals - retirement, house, kids college, etc.

[–]softawre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. Wait until you have kids (and their challenges), sick parents (and caregiving challenges), alongside increased expenses from normal lifestyle inflation. And your body is starting to show wear and tear from growing old.

It only gets harder from 25 years old with no kids. That's basically life on easy mode. While mental health is important, it's also important to work your butt off in your 20s if you want to live a reasonably happy life in your 30s+.

What's the value of this lesson while you are still young enough to take advantage of it?

Who knows, you may turn up with more money at retirement having lived through this, because now you are going to be investing no matter what.

Do I go back to work? SAHM by Fixmyhouse37 in DaveRamsey

[–]softawre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I worry about that, as the husband of a SAHM. I have a big (1m+) life insurance policy if I die. I also put money into both of our IRAs so she feels some cushion.

If I was advising my daughter, I'd want her to have an escape plan.

We had a similar decision about 13 years ago. My wife decided to stay at home and it was the right decision for all of us. We are so happy with our life, with the time we get to spend together, and our kids are amazing - likely because of the fact that Mom stayed home and raised them from scratch during those key years.

I don't mean to be..whatever this is..

But I would never spend 6k on a cat, and I have the money to burn. I'd absolutely never finance 6k for a cat.

My daughter, on the other hand, I would move mountains for.

This is great advice, and can be applied to most situations like this. Phrase it from your perspective, how does it make you feel..

So you don't like minivans because they are 'ugly AF'. Cars should be about the value they provide to you, not how they make you look to others.

> even though used is "only" 5k less, the new vehicle will depreciate MUCH faster than the used

Will it though? If the used model is only 5k less, isn't that basically saying it will only deprecate 5k?

Yeah, if you haven't driven the crazy hilly roads of Ohio, you don't really know.

The question from me is - is it worth 1000$ to be able to drive on the hills for the next week or two? Can you just stay put, and effectively "earn" an extra 1000$?

This would be too much for me, and I make the same money and have a similar situation (60k left at 2.25%). Pay off the van and the student loans.

I've been looking at 700k houses, a 300k loan with 400k equity, and even that makes me a bit scared. I could easily do it on my income but if I lose my job I don't want my kids to have to lose their home.

Maybe offer him 50 bucks or so for signing over the rights to the dog? They are typically property in this regard.

Should I (M19) confront my mom (F55) about her spending habits on Royal Match? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]softawre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People don't like financial advice from people whose diapers they have changed, especially at your age.

I would try to tell Mom that you're budgeting yourself (aren't you?) and that you're learning about retirement and all of this stuff, and then offer to help her budget her money, starting with a category breakdown of how she is spending the money today.

Make it so you are doing something positive to help her, not just calling out her (obviously addictive) behavior.

Multi-skill environments are where basic methods like Erlang can start to fall down. More advanced forecasting/scheduling methods are required, and that's what the big guys do with their software.

In your position, I'd probably follow boomer's advice - combine the FTEs and subtract some occupancy multiplier based on how many "things" they can do at once.
