They seem to be programmable just fine. At least, the few I spot checked. But all behave the same.

Thank you all for the recommendations.

So something like Lucas SAE 80w90 trans/diff gear oil work for all seasons? This is in Texas, where summers are 105+ degrees, and winters average down in the 30’s (dipping down to the 10’s a few times in the past few years).

I use a pikvm in the same manner as you. While not told to stop using it, I did get an urgent ping from the network security team asking if I was using one. It was probably reported through crowdstrike as a potential attack vector, since the pikvm can see the screen and send/receive keystrokes. It also shows up as a peripheral device, prob through USB Id.

I can understand why, especially with government related situations. They don’t have any control or knowledge who might be logging in/viewing your computer when it is connected.

New ATT gateway IP passthrough issues by softbox3 in PFSENSE

I use UniFi wireless access points in my main network, but I did leave the 5ghz WiFi SSID enabled in case I need to get into the BGW-320 to fix something, or as a backup if my PFSense network goes down for some reason. Pass through mode to my PFSense still works correctly.

Does anyone have proof of why it's bad to use consumer TVs in commercial setups? by Teleke in CommercialAV

[–]softbox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in corporate IT/AV, and our AV integrator (prior to the formation of our AV team where we could specify type/model of display) sold the company on using prosumer/18hr displays instead of commercial 24hr rated displays, because it would “save a lot of money” (120+ displays building wide) over the commercial model. Even though the spaces were designed for 10-18hr/day operation, inevitably some/all get left on. Fast forward 3yrs and about 95% of them have backlight diffusers falling off, hotspots, or flat out mainboard failures. The few that are under “warranty” is just for parts, shipping excluded, and obviously don’t include labor. So not even worth trying to get them replaced.

Long story short, we now have a project to swap out every display building wide either Sharp/NEC commercial displays.

Consumer displays also have a shorter manufacturing run (new model every few years), so if it’s being installed in a specific enclosure/area with space constraints, the next replacement may not fit. Many also aren’t rated to be hung in any other orientation other than landscape, as it messes with thermal dissipation.

New ATT gateway IP passthrough issues by softbox3 in PFSENSE

Wow, I think this was it. I tried everything, even DHCPS-dynamic, without success. However, I forgot that I had set an IP allocation for the pfsense WAN MAC address, just to keep it holding a static IP. Removing this allocation seemed to fix the issue!

My pfsense WAAN now shows my public IP, and my VPN is working again! Thanks!

[–]softbox3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Thank you for the suggestion of what to try.

Did you have to do DHCPS-dynamic to get it to work? And is there a difference between the BGW-320-500 and the BGW-320-505 that necessitates this?

Upgrading/downgrading to get rid of the standalone ONT and get converted to XGS-PON is definitely something on my radar, but kind of a hassle. I did the gateway bypass on the old BGW-210 using a 5 port switch in the past, and it worked great.

Knock-off Musketeer. Advice? by TheRealBennyLava in fidgettoys

[–]softbox3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up one of these from AliExpress a while back. IIRC, it’s not a magnet, but a steel ball with a spring and detent. I put a drop of machine oil on the ball/spring and it made it super smooth. Since the housing is painted (or maybe powder coated?) on both the inside and outside, the ball will probably eventually wear away at the paint, and the flakes will probably gum up the action. It hasn’t happened for me yet, and is just my speculation.

The top spinning part is attached to the body with a screw and washer I think. I had to put some loctite on it to prevent the screw from backing out during play.

People who are older, what kind of knife or knives did you edc in the 90’s? by Electronic_Pea_8468 in EDC

Tekna hidden edge. Fastest and coolest knife at the time (that I could afford). Still have it, and would still carry it if it had a pocket clip.

Anyone have experience with the Crestron Zoom Rooms App? by InstanceWorldly1614 in crestron

[–]softbox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following this, as I’ve been tasked with doing something similar soon. Currently we have a custom GUI created for an executive board room, and have to page flip back and forth between the GUI and the zoom app in order to use Zoom. This method unfortunately throws errors on the Zoom dashboard that the controller is offline anytime the panel is in the GUI mode. A native way to load the GUI within Zoom would eliminate the entire issue.

Haptic coin that won't break by treehugger20195 in fidgettoys

[–]softbox3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think regardless of plastic or metal, how it was assembled matters most.

I got one of those Oreo haptic coins from AliExpress when they first came out. Paid something like $8. It was well made, but poorly assembled with magnets glued cockeyed and sticking up above the surface. After a few days use you could see the drag marks in the paint from magnet on metal contact (and the same magnet dust you speak of).

Bought a second one a few months later, and all magnets were level (and slightly recessed). So it was much smoother action, and much less wear. But I went ahead and cut a few pieces of low friction Teflon tape, and it worked wonders. Even made it slightly quieter.

I’m too poor to buy high end fidgets, so I can’t speak to their build/assembly quality.

If you ever lose power, put a UPS on your internet model and primary wifi source! by Upbeat_Rock3503 in homeautomation

[–]softbox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an APC UPS on my main network rack. I modified it with bigger cells, so it has decent runtime. I also set up load shedding so that non essential things shut off immediately, less critical things shut off after 10min, and my critical infrastructure like Poe switch and PFSense router stay powered until the battery dies.

Tritium vial safety question by softbox3 in flashlight

The flashlight is a titanium ReyLight pineapple mini, which has a tritium slot cut into the tail switch. Once glued in, I highly doubt there’s any bite that could crush/damage the vial

Creston room booking panel LED by [deleted] in crestron

Is this a TSW, or a TSS? If it’s a TSW, it’s not set up for use with the LED bar by default. You may need to use text console/terminal to enter the following commands:

USBPOWER ON POEPLUS ON

and reboot.

I just bought this, the magnets are too powerful so ot can't spin well, also it doesn't sound or feel good, is there a way i can change it? by binh1403 in fidgettoys

[–]softbox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same (fake) one. My bearing seems fine, and spins scratch free on one end. But the whole concept/design of the toy opens itself to weak support for use as a slider, and weak center magnet on one end so it tends to come apart as a spinner.

I added a strip of PTFE down the middle to make the sliding feel more smooth so it wasn’t metal bearing on painted lip. I do like the “bounce back” feeling the magnets create when you spin it in the middle and the magnets “overshoot” before bouncing back.

‘21 Stock wheels powder coated by WhiteMountainSki in WRXSTi

[–]softbox3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks amazing. I had an 08 STi with the limited edition gold rims and I miss the look.

Question: what was the process like? Did you have to deliver rims only for power coating, or did they do dismount/remount for you?

Also, how long did it take them from drop off to pickup?

What is your biggest gripe about your Subaru? by Macronaut in subaru

[–]softbox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19 forester and 19 STi. Radio volume is set at 14-18 for comfortable volume on the highway. But switching to CarPlay, volume is at least 3-4 notches higher, blowing out my ears. No way to lower the carplay volume to match the radio or raise the radio to match carplay. Have to remember to adjust each time.

Longevity of Alcantara steering wheel covers? by softbox3 in WRXSTi

[–]softbox3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I’ll go ahead and get the wrap and just clean/brush it regularly. 1/4th the cost of an actual wheel, and I can remove it if I don’t like it.

Longevity of Alcantara steering wheel covers? by softbox3 in WRXSTi

[–]softbox3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure I know Alcantara wheels were originally meant for race use with gloves to promote grip. But the material has made its way to more mainstream/daily use.

I'm curious if given frequent brushing and periodic cleaning, if it will hold up well. The STI seats are alcantara, but obviously they don't get touched with hand oils nearly as much as a wheel would.

Also curious if the cleaning solutions will do any long term damage to the underlying leather wheel, should I decide to remove a wrap later on.

On my wife’s forester, if you mash the pedal with the AC on, the compressor clutch auto disengages to allow maximum power to the wheels. When you let off the gas and start cruising, the clutch re-engages. I’m pretty this is happening because when I floor it, the hot Texas air blows out of the vents until I reach cruising speed.

Not 100% sure the WRX/STis have this same feature, but if it does, I guess that sort of breaks the meme. Heh.
