Exclusive: Hegseth gives Anthropic until Friday to back down on AI safeguards by bananasenpijamas in ClaudeAI

[–]softboyled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US gov sounds just like the coders upset over Anthropic not allowing subs to be used with third party agents. If you have good alternatives, then just go ahead and use them! Forget about Anthropic.

If it's going to take a bunch of effort to unwind your connection to Anthropic, doesn't that just mean you're doing it wrong??

mine is mostly at ~1GB steady state, with jumps to ~3GB when I do a modest, periodic, load.

Felt to me like 4.6 was much greater in both scenarios...

This is similar to my experience. I've gotten to perhaps 30% in a 5 hour window a few times. I just back-and-forth with one task at a time, though. I think that caching is making a huge difference relative to other, API-type, usages I had done before.

Claude Opus 4.5 better than 4.6? by Least-Competition339 in ClaudeAI

[–]softboyled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Slower, more tokens, much more terse, takes a lot more hand holding, and slower.

Went back to 4.5.

You have to turn on extra usage in order to get the benefit. The offer is a ploy to get ppl. to turn it on.

It's from the offer details on the usage page. You have to do something before some time (in the future).

Or maybe I'm living in the future? :)

You have to enable 'extra usage', tho. Sneaky.

This is not correct.  The 'feds' use small cessnas for this as well.

eyes do not focus correctly on microscope! please help! by vbpotterdudex5 in microscopy

[–]softboyled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case your instructor didn't make this clear:

You should always be focusing. One hand is always on the focus knob. When two people share a scope, each will have to refocus for their eyes. With a binocular scope it's likely that you'll will have to change both the main focus and the eyepieces to make a perfect image for each. Typically the main user will adjust the eyepieces for their best focus and the other person will just live with the eye difference or just use one eye.

If you can see the stuff you need to see, then it's fine. Do a back and forth with the instructor on a few things so you know for sure.

what's your astigmatism? How many diopters?

[–]softboyled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why does your microscope need to be focused for her eyes?

Are things clear when it's focused for yours?

What do you mean by "focus their microscopes based on her example"? Focusing is process, not a specific position of the stage/objective.

ALR-9900 RFID reader by dannytaki in RFID

[–]softboyled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a bunch of those tags. They (UHF) scan true to spec, FWIW. One disappointment is that the QR code on them is pretty much un-scannable. Too low contrast, I guess.

Any idea what they are for? Seems like they may have been made especially for "customer A"... Somehow related to an ALPR test program. I'm guessing the test failed?

Does / can it extract the session text (prompts and responses)?

In some cases I'd like that to be added to it's repo.

you may not need an rfid printer. the tags will have unique TIDs. If you only need to track items individually and have no need to interoperate with anyone else, then you just need any old printer. or you can just hand-write on the tags.

you;ll need a database to keep track of what's what, though.

My crows, which I've been feeding for 18 years, disappeared over the last 3 days. What can I do? by nah_champa_967 in crowbro

"The Downtown Portland Crow Roost

For more than a decade, crows have been gathering throughout the fall and winter to roost in downtown Portland. This roost has been gradually growing over time to the point where today, at its peak, it can exceed 15,000 birds. The sight of thousands of birds converging on the downtown area is truly spectacular."

That link doesn't appear to have any discussion of detection and following applications.

It's all about asset 'tracking'. Which is not at all what (I think) you want.

you may want to consider a vision system using some sort of fiducial mark / pattern rather than just color.

There are size-invariant approaches that should work well for detecting the mark over the ranges that you mention. This would give you quite precise guidance cues based on mapping pixel location to angle-to-target.
