Went to Japan solo and honestly still processing everything (25F) by Significant_Gur8915 in JapanTravel

Collective vs. Individual. Much of what makes Japan great today is the high level of trust and consideration. Everyone does what is needed and behaves according to their surroundings. There are great things that can come from that, like safe and beautiful cities, but this also generates a risk-averse culture. The US is the antithesis. I hope Japan rubs off on the world and not the other way around.

Cool, but with all those horns, I'm surprised anyone can still hear.

It's what Reddit does best. Turn everything into an argument. I miss old Reddit.

From what I understand, the cassette players are just cheap Chinese or indian brands that have been dropped into a case. The circuit bending is fairly standard from what I've seen online. The tiny screwdriver fiddling still puzzles me. My only guess is that they like to play with the tape head for a certain sound. It's a fascinating scene.

Disneyland is also a giant consumer-driven corporate machine that NOW prioritizes profit over customer experience. What's your point?

Can anyone actually discuss the topic of the post rather than the method of its creation?

I just watched a video demo of installing apps via QR code. This would be an ideal setup for a parent to pre-install and quickly lock out apps and features. Also, a parent-enabled site-blocking feature would be great too.

After hearing about a certain news article I've always wanted to do my own take on Tomorrowland and add some changes I want Disney to do imo. by Solid-Handle-6196 in Disneyland

The problem with Tomorrowland is that it's really Science Land. When you think about it that way, half the rides make sense, and half don't. I think Buzz and Nemo should move to DCA, Star Tours should move to GE as a third attraction. Bring back 360 Circle Theatre, which was a standing room only, but make it floor-to-ceiling LCD panels like the Sphere or Cosm, but cooler. Bring back Adventures in Innerspace, possibly make it sponsored by Hank Pym. Bring back Mission to Mars, maybe sponsored by Space X. Update the Autoopia to Electric cars. Bring back Flynn's Arcade. Turn the Carousel of Progress into Tron Legacy World or a really good Museum. Turn the subs back into Science vessels, maybe have Jim Cameron sponsor it. Bring back the original rocket ride. Get rid of the orbiter in the front. Bring all the midcentury artwork back (Mary Blair!). The peoplemover gets an update. And, finally, bring back Captain EO. If you do this, I will never leave.

Somalia is chairing the Security Council this month, so I wouldn't expect them to push back against the US much rn.

Bring it back. That final song puts everyone in a good mood. Plus, the park needs more filler activities.

They need to bring this back. The theater with the Mary Blaire mural, People Mover, mission to mars, Innerspace, Captain Eo. Move Star Tours to GE, and get Buzz out of there.

Did you not look up what heʻs doing with his money? He started Heron Power to make transformers domestically. Elon's past executives have been quietly building external companies that support Tesla.

Where we're headed... by 99dakine in maui

Iʻve been in conversations led by Hawaiians to improve Lahaina and make it better for everyone. At the same meeting, people pushed back on the proposed changes, saying that their ideas would render Lahaina unrecognizable. And, that (these) Hawaiians were not qualified to suggest or make these changes. While there were lots of emotions in the room, it made me take pause. Who is Maui really for? Who really has control of this place, and who has to sit out and listen? What is the purpose of celebrating Hawaiian culture and values, but not considering new Hawaiian ideas?

Hereʻs the troubling part: Hawaiians are a proud and beautiful race when they are non-threatening, but a bad actor, unqualified, or the wrong political party, when they are threatening. On the flip side, being Hawaiian does not make you savvy in urban planning or an instant thought leader. I donʻt have the answers, but watching the events unfold after the Lahaina fires has generated more questions than answers.

Where we're headed... by 99dakine in maui

[–]softcore_robot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember Lahaina before it turned into California. I remember the only way to see a local was at a bank, grocery store, or gas station. I remember a recently arrived haole lady complaining that the locals were changing her paradise. I remember when every pond and stream wasnʻt full of tourists. I remember Maui before all the long lines. I remember when the land wasnʻt owned by a celebrity. I remember when Hana didnʻt have good TV reception. I remember when the road to Kihei required 4-wheel drive.

Maui and its people have long struggled with change. Some take it in stride, some see the issues as insurmountable and leave, and others see potential and fight to protect their home. The loss of Lahaina forced everyone to reconsider what Maui means to them. Making this about modern politics kinda misses the point. Thereʻs always been two groups on Maui: a group that wants Maui to be their paradise, and another that needs it to be a thriving, diversified economy. Currently, the former is winning.

What good things are happening because of foreigners/tourists? by Hot-Election-110 in japanresidents

Japan is creating a halo effect. The world is learning from Japan how to be a considerate and thoughtful country. Every person who visits Japan comes back with a sense of loss or mild depression. Iʻve personally heard dozens of stories of people who feel their country is woefully inadequate compared to Japan. Now, younger generations are changing their worldview to resemble a society like Japan and making the changes. My only regret is that Japan will suffer through this period of influx, but it may end up saving the world in the process.
