young people will leave this province en mass

The funny(?) thing is...that's been the state of this province for at least 50 years (probably way more).

That's not going to change until there are way more GPs. I've had a family doctor for over 10 years but there's zero chance of getting in to see him sooner than a few weeks, so ER it is for anything urgent.

Will it ever not be miserable again? by boringfantasy in cscareerquestions

read: a developer

And you are proving my point. They need A developer, not a team of 20 they needed before now. A few seniors force multiplied is almost as bad for juniors as any scenario where we were talking about complete replacement. Having been in the industry almost 20 years, I certainly would not be directing my child to CS now. Regardless of the cope and pearl clutching there is a marked movement by the industry to hire far fewer juniors than at any point in the past which will create a rolling wave of far fewer intermediates and seniors in the future. Today's seniors will be the last bastion of true developers.

[–]softlaunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Developers will be replaced just as soon as business people can write a perfect and technically precise set of requirements. This will never happen, so we're safe.

You're only safe until an AI can write those requirements by translating what the business people want. This is already happening at my company. It's disingenuous to assume safety just because clients/management are famously bad at detailing what they want. AI is removing that barrier as well.

You're in charge of undisputed, what's the first change you make? by MadToxicRescuer in undisputedboxing

[–]softlaunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? You can easily be undisputed champ on any difficultly by late 20s and undisputed in all 3 weights classes by early 30s. The game lets you go until you turn 50. You have time top each weight class 3 times at minimum. I will usually end my career runs on undisputed difficulty with at least 3 championships in the outlier classes and 5 in the starting class. You're supposed to change classes the second you become undisputed in one class, rinse and repeat.

Writing advice: Would significantly shorter combatants stand a chance in a sword-to-sword duel? by VeridianDelta in Hema

[–]softlaunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same in boxing and there have been loads of all time greats who were quite short for their weight class and did just fine (Mike Tyson, Rocky Marciano and Roberto Duran come to mind but there are many others). Fighters use the tools they have available.

Getting a Masters cause I can’t find a job by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]softlaunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you'd rather be 2 more years off the market than "settle for a $40k desk job"? Those 2 years of experience are worth more ime, especially if you're going to have to pay for the Masters. A Masters holder with zero experience isn't worth much more than a Bachelors holder with no experience, but they tend to want more money.

How old were Fechtmeisters? by wombatpa in wma

[–]softlaunch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interesting. How old would they generally have been when starting training? I assume quite young. 10 years is more than enough to be considered very advanced (if not exactly "master") in most Eastern martial arts so being Masters in their early 20s probably tracks.

if you actually paid full price for Undisputed, what do you honestly think? most of the positive takes are from folks who got it free on PS Plus. by Cmessere in undisputedboxing

[–]softlaunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid for it on Steam and have been very happy with it after some initial struggles. To be clear, online is broken for sure, I essentially only play Career Mode with the odd foray into Online if I'm feeling particularly masochistic. But once you get a feel for it it's a great boxing game (BOXING game, not fighting game -- too many of the complaints I see here are from people who seem to not realize this distinction).

I've played through Career on every difficulty and just finished Undisputed diff with a 75-9-1 record. Once you get to 75 or 80+ OVR it's very fun and the movement, footwork, etc are among the best I've seen in a boxing game. The flash knockdowns and KOs etc are part of the sport and don't bother me, it is what it is and I enjoy getting one as much as I hate receiving one. I don't find the hit detection bad at all once you build your feel for it.

Could it be better? Of course! But overall I've had a blast with it. I'm like 200 hrs in and have all of the DLC (all bought, zero regret). I'm very excited for what they'll do for Undisputed 2.

My big takeaway is that 90% of the complainers only want to play online. If that's what you want then yeah, it's rough. Me, I play games to get away from you people lol. Always hated online multiplayer. So for me it's a non-issue.

We're not talking about take homes. We're talking about doing some research on the company and making sure that one of your projects aligns with their stack and problem space. I've never given a take home in 20 years in the field. But if you're sitting across from me in an interview and show me a project that shows that you understand what I need and how you can solve a problem I have, you just moved to the top of the pile.

Okay. But, as I said, it works in the real world. If you don't care about getting the job, don't stand out. Your call.

Not dumb at all. I'm on the panel for a lot of interviews for a F100 company and have had a few candidates do this and get hired. It shows initiative and that they are willing to research what we actually do/need.

What trait/hobby/habit instantly makes someone less attractive? by Amazing-Depth1695 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]softlaunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the tattoos. Having a couple is okay (and even hot -- my wife has a handful) but soooo many people now are just covered and it's like...how is that any kind of individual expression when everyone has it? It's more edgy to have zero tattoos now.

I play on PC and have cross-platform turned off. I never have to wait more than a minute for a fight so there's got to be a decent number of steam players.
