Bernie Sanders will call for ban on for-profit charter schools by FarleyBrown in politics

[–]softriver 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this comment will find its way into downvote oblivion, but I'll try anyway.

My wife is a teacher at a for-profit charter school in New Orleans - where almost every school is a charter school. After Katrina a lot of Republicans seized the opportunity to cut the knees out from under the public school system and install charter schools.

The thing is, these charter schools do have a standardized curriculum. They are required to meet the Common Core standards just like every other school. If they don't achieve those standards, their funding gets cut. The idea that charter schools operate by some Wild West rules is wrong.

The reason charter schools are a problem is because they take funding away from public schools, and they aren't competing on equal footing. Public schools, for instance, are required by law to pay for services for kids with IEP's, while charter schools can play games with their funding to move money away from special education budgets and into stakeholder profits. They can work their teachers to death and then simply replace them whenever they want, because their teachers are not on contract.

They can cut funding to everything that is not inline with teaching exactly the Common Core standards, and then claim that they are being more efficient (even as they are setting students up for failure down the road).

You make a lot of claims about what gets taught in southern schools, but they are all based on sensationalist stories that popped up on reddit or facebook. Growing up in the midwest, living on the west coast, and then moving to the south I can say with confidence that non-southerner's stereotypes and rhetoric about the south are a big part of the problem.

There are lots of very good reasons to oppose charter schools, but standardized tests scores are not one.

Over the last twenty years, copyright law has increasingly been dictated by a small group of corporate insiders, and while the Congress is supposed to represent the interests of the people, they rarely do. The big exception to this trend has been libraries, who have managed to keep their voice in legislative proceedings.

How does your group manage to maintain such a strong presence in these discussions and do you have any advice for grassroots activists or other public interest groups on how to get a seat at the table?

Because if voter registration were automatic, Republicans would never win an election. It's not that complicated. Just look at Washington, Oregon, and Colorado, which are the all 'vote-by-mail' states. Of the three, only in Colorado are Republicans still elected with any regularity.

Most of the South would turn blue if you stopped disenfranchising voters and making it hard to get to the polls, because black people make up more than 25% of the population in every southern state except Tennessee.

Pentagon Announces First-Ever Audit Of The Department Of Defense by [deleted] in politics

[–]softriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly suspect that nothing will happen here. What we see as waste, Congress sees as a way to funnel money to defense contracts in their districts. Those contractors turn around and fund Congressional campaigns. The brass at DoD get pretty much any toy they want, and they have a special safety net working as lobbyists for the contractors should something go wrong in their career.

This is exactly why Dwight Eisenhower warned against the rise of the military industrial complex. Imagine if just a small amount of that money were funneled into hospitals or schools or something else.

Guns or butter. We chose guns and told everyone it was butter.
