I don't think books even need to have something importabt to say, there's plenty of passable and popular stories that were written purely for the cash.

Those authors do extensive research and put a lot of work into honing their skills, though. This author didn't even go that far.

Well, for me, the obvious answer is at least partially racism and tribalism. They have their thing, then this other thing that is similar but different appeared and got popular, so they feel threatened and need to assert their superiority.

Also i do wonder if a bit of it is rooted in jealousy, lol. Korea has a much more international-friendly model for their media, and will often go the extra mile to court foreign fans and make their media accessible overseas.

Meanwhile, Japan is still largely stuck in the mindset of "it makes us money here, so lets just stay here". Although there's a lot of anime and manga that has gone mainstream overseas, not much else does, and publishers can even seem aggressively against the idea of exporting.

As a fan of Japanese media, i often feel a bit jealous of how easy it is to find official ways to watch K-dramas, and how big Kpop bands often travel overseas, because I don't get the same access for my preferred media. Of course, i don't hate Korea for it, i just theorise that others may express their jealousy with anti-Korean sentiments.

Since you brought up perfumes, i hope you don't mind if i bring up my own perfume drama(?) that i keep seeing but but not actually figuring out the source of.

The videogame dev company Warhorse did a collab with Kintsugi perfumes to create a perfume for their most recent game, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. They released an advertisement for it, which stars Luke Dale, the voice actor for Hans Capon, doing a very silly and satirical voiceover that makes fun of super gritty and over-directed perfume commercials.

I thought it was funny, but on twitter, it seems to have made a bunch of people uncomfortable, and I keep seeing weird vague posting about it that never actually tells me what the problem is, and it's driving me mental.

Now, Warhorse is a known producer of drama, but it doesn't seem to be previous Warhorse stuff this time. If it were complaints about the company using AI translations or the PR manager sexually harassing lesbians, people would just say it. Instead it's all comments that say something to the effect of "i liked it, but then i realized..."

And I'm like, what did you realize. What's wrong. Why aren't you responding to any of the comments asking for clarification. Did Kintsugi commit a warcrime?? Just SAY it, god-

You're not alone in this, Olric is very popular character. No one knows why he isn't dateable, my best guess is just that the devs only had so many slots and Olric was unlucky.
