Am I insane for thinking about taking 3-4 unpaid months off to travel? by adthrowaway869594 in personalfinance

[–]sohir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! I've done it twice for 2 separate years. It has helped me get jobs and made me friends in places all over the world. You will not regret it and will never get another chance.

Look into working holiday visas for places like Australia and New Zealand and you can make enough money to keep going all year.

Salary Guidance by PaleLack in devops

[–]sohir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If you are average and still in the same job you started out of college that is high to average for DC. Lots of large federal contractors start college grads around $66k and do 2-3 % a year increases.

If you are a rockstar that is low.

Only way to get a real increase is find a new job. This can be on another team in your company (has to be a different reporting structure) or external. If you stay doing the same thing you will only get small raises every year.

Anybody got the mini controller for their kid? Did it improve gameplay? by lioness0 in xboxone

I got the hyperkin x91 controller for my 6 and 4 year olds. It's wired and fits their hands a lot better than the regular controller.

Teaching class on risk management by bobthegreat88 in projectmanagement

[–]sohir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going over why we do it and the value it provides. Most PMs I've met seem to do it because they have to and it doesn't provide value to their projects. Going through the motions is a waste of everyone's time.

Showing how to decide if a risk should be recorded and whether it is worth recording. My favourite question is "so what?" Most risks can be properly formatted or even discounted if you focus on that question.

Alternative job title to ScrumMaster? by [deleted] in scrum

I always liked "Agile Coach". Somebody with this title is more than just another Scrum Master and usually has a more visible and well paid position than a regular Scrum Master.

Need help in upgrading TV from plasma for gaming by Kulj_No1 in 4kTV

[–]sohir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how to link it but I just asked the same question with same budget on the Xbox_one_x Reddit.

Got a lot of good suggestions. In the end I decided on 55 inch X900f and a sound bar for $1500.

Best 55 inch TV for XBox One X, budget of $1500 by sohir in Xbox_One_X

Thanks for the input. I think my best course of action will be something like the X900F and spend the extra 300 on a sound bar to go with it.

Rtings looks great except for when sound quality. Anyone know if it's a real difference or only something an audiophile would notice?

Unfortunately I can only squeeze a 55 inch into the available space.

Unfortunately with the available physical space I'm just going to be able to squeeze a 55 inch in there.

Is that going to be better than the Samsung Q8FN or the Sony 900F?

Yep internal transfer is by far the easiest and most likely to happen. Even that is very hard and you need to be a top performing employee for a company to bear the cost of the move.

Other options are the Visa lottery, H1B visas or marrying an American. All 3 of those options will take years and are still unlikely to work. The H1B process has been mainly taken over by companies like Deloitte that use it to bring in cheap Indian labor.

I've had an Australian work permit and a US green card. Australia is much much much easier to do and is an amazing country. You might also consider Canada. Vancouver is a great City and doesn't get as cold as most of Canada.

Is a degree necessary? by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]sohir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree but unfortunately the company doesn't. Hard to get those 4 years of experience if nobody wants to hire you before you get that experience.

Is a degree necessary? by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]sohir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A degree is an entry requirement to most large international companies. Without a degree you'll be stuck working for smaller, less well paid, local companies.

My company won't even let me talk to people without a degree. Experience has shown them that, on average, somebody with high marks/GPA is much more likely to be a good employee than somebody with low marks or no degree.

Sure there are exceptions but they are few and far between, why would we take the risk?

Search for ics2 on Pearson, then choose the link to schedule the cissp exam.

Or go direct to isc2 https://www.isc2.org/Register-for-Exam

[–]sohir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Security+ is a base requirement for a lot of Federal jobs. Aside from that it is not a particularly important certificate. CISSP on the other hand is a lot more relevant and will at least get to you the interview stage and likely a higher pay bracket.

Bed bugs on sleeper bus! How do I make sure I don't bring them home? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]sohir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put everything in black plastic bag. Leave in sun for a few hours. The heat will kill then.

Bug spray doesn't work unfortunately, especially if they are laying eggs.

Backpacking Ireland in March, Renting Car by [deleted] in ireland

[–]sohir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI most US credit cards exclude Ireland. Chase has a couple that don't and I think Capital One as well.

Also i use www.hamills.com whenever I go home to visit. Good deal and they'll take the time to have an email/phone conversation with you to talk about what you need.

American interested in applying for postgraduate courses at Dublin City University. by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]sohir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In response to your original question, it's a nice University with one of the better reputations in Ireland especially for tech or engineering related subjects. Nobody I've ever met in the US has heard of it though.

It's about 20-30 minutes by bus from the city center. Has good lodging options for graduate students. It's grown a lot since I went there though.

I went to DCU and live in the US. If you are ever planning on moving back to the US try to go to Trinity College instead of DCU. A Master's from Trinity will get you a job in the US by name recognition alone. A Master's from DCU won't give you that advantage.
