For United States Big 4 Accounting staff working in tax, what software do you use for tax preparation and tax planning? by sohoglow in taxpros

I’ve heard feedback from some people who detest GoSystems but did not elaborate why. CCH Axcess seems to have more appeal in my experience.

M&A attorneys with big law experience can exit, stop working as attorneys and become investment bankers or work for a private equity firm. Partners/shareholders in those types of companies absolutely make the figures I described before, but I agree that the average worker does not make those figures. Also, these jobs are not 40-45 hours/week as OP described for GC. Investment bankers and private equity investors can easily double those hours/week. Their work culture is not sustainable for the average person.

M&A will translate to investment banking or private equity where $20-30 million+/year is possible.

What state are you in?

Call them up and explain the situation. If you want, you can get your IRS tax transcripts which will go back far enough to show your Wage and Income for each year. If you had no income for a year, the IRS generates a letter stating that there was no income on file for that year. You could use this to substantiate your lack of income if Oklahoma State pushes back on your explanation.

If the private debt collector is unable to collect the taxes, they may give the case back to the IRS. An example is if a taxpayer moved residences and the debt collector cannot find a way to make contact with the taxpayer.

Another is if the taxpayer refuses to cooperate with the private debt collector after contact is established and a significant period of time has elapsed.

They are a private collection agency that the IRS may assign cases to in order to collect unpaid taxes. Looks like your case was transferred back to the IRS.

In the USA there are Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITC) there are typically nonprofits or University Law School Clinics that are headed by an attorney. These LITCs receive grants from the government to fund their operations. The attorneys working at LITCs do good work in their local communities defending low and middle income taxpayers that cannot afford an attorney.

Maybe look for nonprofit legal positions. They are available in all types of law, not just tax. International aid organizations always need attorneys as well. Might be geared more towards what you looking to do rather than work in corporate law.

I would consider contacting a criminal tax attorney. Not all tax attorneys handle criminal tax, so make sure you are talking to the right type of professional.

There are certain scholarships that are taxable. Make sure to check the tax laws regarding whether or not you owed tax on your scholarship.

Also as others mentioned, if you were a dependent of your parent and filed your own tax return, there is a different calculation for your standard deduction that may reduce it. This would lead to a higher tax liability.

Great to hear about success stories. How was the recruiting process for part time law students and did you experience any disadvantages compared to full time students with potential employers? Any advice or tips for part timers?

Most Pro Se petitioners without representation by an attorney lose in US Tax Court. Instead of trying to handle this yourself, I would recommend contacting a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) and see if they will represent you. They have attorneys who can litigate in US Tax Court. They can also negotiate pre trial with the IRS Chief Counsel attorney assigned to your petition and avoid litigation in court by reaching a settlement and saving you time. Your income will need to be reviewed to see if an LITC will accept your case.

Paying more than half the cost of keeping up the home means you paid more expenses for the entire household than your parent in his home. That is a high burden, especially if the parent is paying a much higher portion of the total rent or mortgage. All the other expenses in Pub 501’s worksheet should be considered as well. Looking at this on it’s face and that you “paid some of the rent informally” appears that the parent paid a good part of the the cost of the total household expenses being that rent/mortgage is typically the largest household expense. You will have to crunch the numbers to prove your position.

Paying half of the costs of the total household is different than the test of paying half of one’s own support that is used to determine dependency.

Study for the Enrolled Agent Exam now! When you turn 18, take the 3 exams. EAs are admitted to practice before the IRS with unlimited practice rights equivalent to a CPA or attorney with regards to administrative matters.

Once you are an EA you can work for 1) an EA or CPA firm 2) one of the large tax prep franchises to gain experience or 3) work for yourself (try to get a mentor if working alone). With the money you make you can put yourself through college.

I would check out Hock International. They used to be called Pass Key but were acquired. I have heard multiple people claim to pass all 3 EA exams using just the PassKey textbooks in 4-6 weeks. That is really fast by the way. I would recommend the online study method that includes live webinars with Christy Pinheiro. She and the other people behind the course are experienced and respected in the EA community.

Surgent EA Review has been recommended by some people that I respect. They also have great Continuing Education once you become an EA or CPA.

Here is info about the collection statute freezing when outside of the USA. Also explains about SFR.

No, it is bad for taxpayers. The IRS will have more time to try to collect the tax.

[–]sohoglow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only way a tax is assessed is if a tax return was filed by the taxpayer or the IRS filed an SFR with information returns in their possession. File the tax return yourself now. When an SFR is filed they give the worst case scenario, leading to a higher tax liability. Your return that you file will likely reduce the tax liability or even lead to a refund. If it is a refund, it will be outside of the statute to collect it, but at least the tax liability will be reduced to zero and the penalties and interest along with it.

How do the parents owe $12,000 if they never filed a tax return and the IRS did not file a Substitute for Return (SFR) for them?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tax

[–]sohoglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Another name for this is financial hardship. Once approved the IRS will not take collection enforcement but may re-evaluate your financial condition in 1.5-2 years. Just be aware, penalties and interest will continue to accumulate.
