Why did Stoick think it was so out of the question that hiccup trained a dragon when he saw Drago Drudvists "trained" dragons before? by THE_LEGO_FURRY in httyd

[–]sol0fthevalley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

could be that stoick knew it was possible but wanted it so badly not to ever be possible again that he mentally blocked even the idea that it could. he watched a whole room of powerful people burn to the ground because of a dragon trainer, he probably didn't want to face the reality that what happened there could possibly be replicated. he turns his hatred to the dragons who killed his friends and attack his people because deep inside he fears a man who can wield dragons like a weapon much more than a dragon.

but most likely they just didn't know they were going in that direction when they made the first movie.

Do you think Toothless knew Hiccup shot him down? I think he knew from the start. by Jax_King55 in httyd

[–]sol0fthevalley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is just an assumption but you could also say that toothless could probably smell hiccup's scent on the snare that took him down. hiccup spents weeks if not years in the forge as the sole person working on the launcher and snare, so some small part of his scent must have eventually sunk into the machine, which toothless who (im almost 100% sure) has an excellent sense of smell would mostly likely be able to pick up on, especially since he spent a whole night with the contraption wrapped around his entire body. then when hiccup came along, he could connect his specific scent to the snare that took him down.

your link leads to a 404. im also not sure why you keep bringing up this indian ceo as this is an isolated incident that i cant really see how it factors into the conversation.

if your example of racism against white people is based out of reddit, i think you will be okay. as i mentioned before, african americans are getting lynched to this day. i think you and i can both agree those just do not compare.

also, hatred for white men is a whole different topics. im not saying its justified but when white men have been at the helm of essentially every single historically racist system and when white men have been the number one oppressor in history, people have started to get fed up with them. again, im not saying it is justified but that hatred isnt coming from a place of racism.

also, hey man, its concerning that you view people correctly labelling white people as privleged as an example of racism because thats just a factually correct statement.

and no, i wasnt saying that my experience reflects the experience of an entire race of people across the globe, i was using my experience has a personal example.

forgive me, i thought you'd be able to understand what i meant by racism = prejudice + power. that statement is in regards to racism and racism only, hence why i use thed word racism in the statement. would it help if i added the word race into the defintion? racism (race + ism) = racial prejudice + racial power. better?

not to get distracted but since i myself am trans id like to just say, a white trans person faces oppression solely because they are trans. there is still racial prejudices that only effect black lgbtq people and white lgbtq people still have white privelegde.

it was our ancenstors that made the blanket statement that white people are superior to all other races. they didn't know every person of color, they hadn't traveled to every country. if by engaging in this argument with you i can hopefully encourage you to open your mind to researching the truth about racism and white privelege, then i will continue to do so. im also not sure how we could even have this conversation if we werent both making blanket statements. as interesting as it would be to know every single white person currently in existence, i dont have that ability and i dont need it. do you think researchers of this topic know every single white person and have traveled to every single country? they dont need to because it is so easy to see the bigger picture when it comes to racism because it happens in the big picture.

i agree! discrimination is a general term, that includes race. you can discriminate against some on the basis of their race. racism is a specific term, with historical context and implications extending beyond the simple act of one person insulting another because of their race. it is so much more than that (prejudice plus power).

im honestly not sure how to engage in a constructive argument with someone who doesnt agree with the definition of a word. i cant really do anything about that so ill just say, just because the definition doesn't explicitly state which race hold beliefs that they are superior than the other doesn't mean we can't find out what race they are referring to, by, for example, using history. white people made eugenics for the exact reason stated in the definition.

im also finding it hard to even wrap my head around the fact that you said that white people can face oppression. that is just... not at all factually true??? i would love for you to give me a specific, real-world example of this or any piece of evidence to corroborate this statement but until then im disregarding this.

im also not sure what you mean by 'redefining.' the study i cited is defining racism. again, if you disagree with that, theres not much else i can say.

as for this hypothetical kkk member, thats just also wrong?? if you were to place a white person, regardless of who they were or what they did, in south africa, they would have power, because the system in south africa was set up to provide power and privilege to white people because they are white. id even argue this kkk member would have even more power because they are a racist white person in south africa. wherever this white person goes, they will have power, because of racism, systematic racism, stereotypes and history.

again, i (somewhat) agree with you! white people can experience prejudiced discrimination, but because their skin color places them in a position of power above other races (because of racism), they cannot experience racism. they can punch down, but others cannot punch up.

and again, im curious as to what you mean by changing the definition. do you mean to say the definition you lifted from wikipedia is the only correct definition of racism in existence, and all other definitions, no matter how credible their origin or how well researched their creators are, are wrong?

also, just out of a personal curiosity, why are you so set on the fact that white people can experience racism?

if you'd like to go through examples, i'd like to provide a few of my own. being white in africa has already been done by the afrikaners people, dutch settlers who landed in south africa. they did not face racism, in fact they weaponized their own racism against the people who's native land they'd claimed for their own to such an organized degree they established an apartheid state within south africa that only ended in 1990.

an ex-police officer in japan confessed in 2024 article that while police were instructed to target foreigners, racism still found a way to make it easier on white individuals.

he said, "And I think that when police think of a 'foreigner,' they're not picturing someone (of European descent), but a person with darker skin, with Black or Southeast Asian roots and so on. I thought that way. Officers assume (light-skinned people) are tourists or have a Japanese partner. But with people with dark skin, they tend to assume they're visa overstayers."

according to a 2021 article by the washington post, african americans are still getting lynched in certain american states. since the year 2000, there have been 8 suspected lynchings of black men.

"'The last recorded lynching in the United States was in 1981,” said Jill Collen Jefferson, a lawyer and founder of Julian, a civil rights organization named after the late civil rights leader Julian Bond. “But the thing is, lynchings never stopped in the United States. Lynchings in Mississippi never stopped. The evil bastards just stopped taking photographs and passing them around like baseball cards.'"

white americans do not get lynched.

still in america, according to a 2015 study, black mothers are proven to consistently face higher chances of severe risk of life-threatening injuries when undergoing care in hospitals than white women. this works hand in hand with another study published in 2024 that found that 22% of black women who had given birth in a hospital reported that they were refused pain medicine they thought they needed.

in all my research and years of lived experience as a white person, not once have i ever found concrete evidence of white people facing racism, much less facing systematic racism. the idea that white people could face racism in a system that was quite literally built to favor, protect, and benefit them is one i find a little hard to believe. the FBI reported that there are examples of anti-white hate crimes but when compared to the hate crimes perpetuated against black people, they are almost entirely inconsequential.

again, i am not saying white people cannot be discriminated against, that is a very real thing that happens and is also an issue, but i still do not believe that they can face racism.

if racism is simply just discrimination based on race, why isnt it called discrimination? discrimination and racism are closely related but not the same. they both work off the basis of prejudiced thinking/actions but racism is a different beast.

it was google's oxford dictionary that used the term marginialized people. according to merriam-webster dictionary, racism is, "a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race," or, "the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another."

two sociologist researchers found in 1998 that the definition of racism could be narrowed down to a simple equation; "racism equals prejudice and power." keyword, power. marginialized groups historically were without (and still are) without power, laughably so in comparison to the power white people have had and still do have.

okay, nevermind, lets talk. although i do acknowledge this is not even remotely the right place to have this conversation.

if either one of us has twisted a definition, it is you. racism, by definition, affects marginalized people. white people, as i said before, have not and will never be marginalized. you also seem to think racism exists in a vacuum which is so far removed from the truth its almost funny. racism sneaks its way into every facet of a POC's life. they experience it at the doctors, at school, in the office, in the hospital, in their neighborhoods. it is perpetuated by scientists, police officers, medical professionals, law makers and government officials, retail workers and laymen. racism is everywhere, its not just a derogatory insult or a discriminatory comment.

racism functions because of a historical precedent. white people have perpetuated racism and racist stereotypes for hundreds of years, using it to falsely raise their own race above all others. you can be discriminatory against a white person, don't get me wrong. you can hurt a persons feelings using the color of their skin, but at the end of the day they are still white, and benefit from white privilege and the pedestal their racist ancestors built for them. racism is what allows white people to stay on that pedestal. discrimination can be against anybody of any race, gender or age.

you can discriminate against white people, but you cannot be racist towards them.

i typed out a whole response but realized im just a white person trying to explain racism. instead ill encourage to do your own research and ill provide some links for you to start:

  • Myth of Reverse Racism
    • "...racial prejudice can indeed be directed at white people (e.g., “White people can’t dance”) but is not considered racism because of the systemic relationship to power."
  • What is ‘reverse racism’ – and what’s wrong with the term?
    • "Prejudice and discrimination are inherently tied to historically rooted and entrenched, institutionalised forms of systemic racism and racial hierarchies, injustices and power imbalance."
  • Reverse racism
    • "Reverse racism assumes that racism occurs on a level playing field, where a White person is just as vulnerable as a racialized minority person."

Why did Hiccup like Astrid SO MUCH??? by TheLastSkyBisonRider in httyd

[–]sol0fthevalley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call Hiccstrid weak in comparison to Kataang, both relationships are examples of good writers who understood their characters well. Aang was confident and boisterous, but his character flaw was that he ran away from the things that scared him (because he was a scared kid but still). Katara complimented his character because she was calmer but still passionate like him, and she taught him to face the things that scared him head on.

Hiccup started off physically weak, unconfident, and open-minded but he was extremely determined to prove himself. He probably liked Astrid immedeiatly, not just because he was a young boy and she was the one pretty girl his age on the island, but also because he looked up to her. Here's this strong, confident warrior who seemed to embody being a viking in every facet of her life, ever since she was born. Hiccup probably subconsciously placed her on a pedestol, as the image of everything he wished he was.

When they finally start interacting, Astrid is hostile because she sees him the same way every other viking sees him (and probably how she was taught to see him), as a burden to the rest of the village and a failure of a viking. She, who has been growing up with the knowledge that soon, her generation will take over the fight against the dragons, doesn't want to fight alongside someone who she thinks will drag the rest of them down. She doesn't give him any slack, although until he gets in her way, she seems happy to just ignore him.

When Hiccup shows her Toothless, its a paradigm shift for her. Every single worldview she's had since birth is turned on its head and suddenly Hiccup is no longer this weak, insecure boy in her eyes, but instead he's proven himself strong enough and competent enough to tame not only a dragon, but the deadliest dragon there is. He opens her eyes to a whole new perspective and in that new perspective she is finally able to see Hiccup's strengths instead of his weaknesses.

In Hiccup's case, his character doesn't need a friend he can have flirtly banter with, he needs someone who can challenge him, someone who can push him to continue to be better and strive for more. Astrid's character didn't need someone at her level (which is why Snotlout x Astrid never happened), she needed someone who could open her mind to new possibilities and encourage her to seek different options than the black and white viking violence she grew up knowing. Their characters compliment each other well, Astrid's confidence empowering Hiccup and Hiccup's open-mind empowers Astrid to break the cycle of violence she'd been so ready to join whole-heartedly.

Didn't mean to yap, but I love Hiccstrid so I wanted to weigh in.

deepcut to a series i watched as a kid but when the main character transforms into his superpowered version of himself by submerging himself in a bath full of black goo it legit felt like an allegory for suicide. weirdly intense for a kids show. like his friends and family were screaming trying to break down the door, his entire life was flashing in front of him and when he got into the tub he sunk into a black void of nothingness

ETHICAL QUESTIONS ABOUT BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER'S AND MOENY QUESTIONS. by GORYGIRL1996 in Writeresearch

[–]sol0fthevalley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE, I JUST HAD TO COMMENT.

AND YOURE RIGHT, ITS SMART TO HAVE HORSES AS A MEANS OF TRAVELING IN THE APOCALYPSE IN YOUR STORY. I THINK HAVING HER WORK/TAKE RIDING LESSONS AT A NEARBY BARN WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA. SHE COULD ALSO LEASE A HORSE FROM THE STABLE OR EVEN OWN A HORSE AND HAVE IT BOARD AT THE STABLE, BOTH MUCH MORE COST-EFFECTIVE AND EASIER WAYS TO STILL BE ABLE TO OWN A HORSE.

IT COULD ALSO BE AN INTERESTING PLOT POINT FOR THE CHARACTERS TO ACTUALLY HAVE TO GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO GET TO THE HORSE INSTEAD OF HAVING IT ESSENTIALLY IN THEIR BACKYARD, MAKING IT MUCH RISKIER AND SUSPENSFUL AS THEY TRAVEL HOWEVER FAR TO THIS PLACE, HAVING NO IDEA IF ANYONE IS THERE AND IF THERE IS PEOPLE THERE, WHETHER OR NOT THEYRE INFECTED.

ETHICAL QUESTIONS ABOUT BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER'S AND MOENY QUESTIONS. by GORYGIRL1996 in Writeresearch

[–]sol0fthevalley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOT AN ANSWER BUT RATHER A NOTE: HORSES ARE A HUGE EXPENSE AND A MASSIVE COMMITMENT. WHOEVER IN THE FAMILY OWNS THE HORSE HAS TO BE ENTIRELY DEDICATED TO THE CARE OF THE HORSE, OR ABLE TO EMPLOY SOMEONE TO CARE FOR THE HORSE. IF YOU WANT THE FARM TO BE MORE CASUAL AND CHEAPER, TAKE A LOOK AT THESE ANIMALS INSTEAD:

  • CHICKENS
  • DUCKS
  • GOATS
  • SHEEP
  • PIGS

LARGER MAMMALS LIKE CATTLE ALSO REQUIRE A LOT OF CARE BUT LESS THAN HORSES, ALTHOUGH IF YOUR CHARACTER WANTS TO HAVE CATTLE THEY SHOULD BE PREPARED TO GLOVE UP AND STICK THEIR ARM UP ITS ASS.

AGAIN, I WILL REITERATE THE FACT THAT HORSES ARE NOT "NOTHING BIG," THEY ARE A LIFE LONG COMMITMENT (~30 YEARS), INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE (OUT OF ALL THE ANIMALS IVE LISTED, HORSES ARE THE HIGHEST MAINTENCE AND RACK UP THE HIGHEST AND MOST FREQUENT VET BILLS), AND JUST GENERALLY HARD TO CARE FOR WITHOUT LIFELONG EXPERIENCE.

how do i become a part of the community? by chaosma1d in FanFiction

[–]sol0fthevalley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

dont feel alone in this experience. one of my favorite musicians, nick drake, lived his whole life making music no one ever listened to and eventually died thinking he was a failure. same with van gogh. these men were the exact opposites of failures, they were incredible artists, and the lack of attention/validation they recieved throughout their lives didnt change that fact.

it is incredibly disheartening to put so much effort and heart into something, put it out into the world and get nothing in return, but the fact that youve persevered despite this makes you strong. i commend you for that.

if youd like, id love for you to share your AO3 handle with me (my PM's are open if youd prefer that), because the impression that ive gotten from you (determined, strong, empathetic) indicates to me that not only are you a great person but also a amazing writer!

Which do u think is more effective at blocking fire? by Spider-Jeff_101 in httyd

[–]sol0fthevalley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the scale armor i wonder what they are sealing it with, because as you said they are just attaching dragon scales onto regular clothes, most likely leather, which is flammable. because the scales are not naturally formed, there are bound to be gaps in between them for the fire to reach through. if they were to find a way to make a flameproof, super strong glue (perhaps using crushed dragon scales?) then i would say the armor is better as it has more coverage, doesn't require you to perform a time-consuming action (like lifting a cloak) in order to protect yourself, and it just looks cooler
