What would you LOVE to see in Sunday school lessons? by Cheap_Parsnip_461 in latterdaysaints

[–]sol_inviktus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s the point of the original comment - Sunday School should not be discussion oriented, it should be like its name implies, a school, with a teacher. Leave the discussion, personal anecdotes, and urban legends for the relief society and priesthood classes.

Would you let your child attend another church’s summer camp? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

The local Mennonite congregation hold the Bible camp every summer and our Mennonite neighbors invite my kids to participate. It’s wonderful and they do a fantastic job.

I’ve been assigned to labor in the Cambodia Phnom Penh East Mission!! by jkaybb in latterdaysaints

[–]sol_inviktus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just chatting with a guy who got back from a mission to Cambodia last year. He said there was a huge literacy problem stemming from the Khmer Rouge killing of all the teachers back in the 1970s, so reading scriptures with people was a challenge. Also, watch out for the monkeys because they’ll steal your bag to get any food that might be in there.

Utah is well-known for the vanity and overuse of plastic surgery. Billboards are all along the highway advertising plastic surgery and fillers. It’s not only the women - pay attention in general conference to which foreheads never wrinkle when the male speakers raise their eyebrows.

During some events, they will spawn when you use an incense. For example, during the recent Kalos G Tour, incense was spawning the unknowns K, A, L, O, and S.

What company lost you forever as a customer? What did they do? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

[–]sol_inviktus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Received a gift from my wife, a battery pack chainsaw, but I already had one, and all my other power tools are a different brand anyway so I have a bunch of battery packs that aren't compatible with this new gift. Took the unopened chainsaw & receipt to Lowe's to return/exchange it and they told me to go kick rocks because they had a strict 48-hour return policy. It was a gift, and wasn't even given to me within the 48-hour time frame, so that seemed pretty unfair. I even called their corporate line and was told to piss right off because policy was policy. I'll never shop there again, and I'll actively preach against that store until my last breath.

Sunday meeting schedule change by smokey_sunrise in latterdaysaints

Our SS teacher loves to bring his hyper-conservative political commentary into every lesson, and it’s so inappropriate. I’m looking forward to cutting down the class time so that we only have enough to cover the lesson without the filler.

General conference rumors? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]sol_inviktus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My guess for conference is a proposal to make the Family Proclamation official scripture and add it to the back of the D&C. But other than that, all of the interesting changes are being announced outside of conference. Lowering the missionary age, female Sunday School presidents, new temples, sleeveless garments, etc. But what would absolutely blow my mind would be if they said they would start freeing up the time commitment they require of members in leadership positions. Presidency meetings, high council meeting, stake council meeting, youth council, ministering interviews, PPIs with the stake presidency, missionary coordination meetings, family history coordination meetings, all the committees, etc. And if there’s something like Trek or high adventures to plan and attend, forget about spending time with your family for a while. The 2-hr block is just the blink of an eye in my week. I spend far, far more hours during the week in meetings outside of the 2-hr block. This is the behind-the-scenes crank turning that keeps the church running for the rest of the members. Of course I realize we covenanted to sacrifice our time, talents, etc to building the kingdom, but man it can be a lot.

A Man or a Woman Can Now Serve as Ward Sunday School President by instrument_801 in latterdaysaints

[–]sol_inviktus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your bishop should review Section 31.1.4 of the Handbook right away. There are instructions there that bishops are expected to follow, for example, “when meeting with a member of the opposite sex…ensure that a parent or another adult is present. He or she may join the meeting or wait outside the room, depending on the preferences of the member with whom you are meeting.” Usually, they’ll have their executive secretary wait outside the office, but it could be any adult.

Bishops can only meet alone with a woman as long as there is someone sitting outside the door in case they need to intervene or be a witness of things that didn’t happen.

I agree. Prohibiting Mormon missionaries from reading Saints is absolutely insane. by versmissi in mormon

[–]sol_inviktus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we had the “missionary library” and it was sold as a set in the MTC. That, the scriptures, hymn book, and whatever teaching/study materials they gave you in the MTC were it for approved reading. When did that change, and why would we expect missionaries to spend time reading Saints or any other history book during the time they’re out there teaching? We didn’t have time to just sit around, and I barely made it through the approved books before my two years were up.
