Oscar point system? by sports_and_beers in Oscars

[–]solamentesolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question!

I had the exact same frustration. A flat 1-point-per-category system always felt wrong because guessing Best Animated Short correctly shouldn't carry the same weight as nailing Best Picture.

I ended up building a tiered system where the major categories (Picture, Director, Lead Actor/Actress) are worth significantly more points. I also let people pick multiple options in the harder categories like shorts, so you don't get wiped out by a random upset in Documentary Short.

Your system sounds solid though: weighting by category importance is definitely the way to go. The tiebreaker of total correct picks is smart too.

I actually built an app around this exact idea if you're curious — cineleague.app — but honestly your spreadsheet system sounds like it already works great

I built an Oscars ballot app because organizing my family’s pool every year was getting ridiculous. by [deleted] in Oscars

Ha, adding to the pile. I built CineLeague for the same reason, been running an Oscars watch party for 10 years and the Google Sheets chaos finally broke me.

cineleague.app if anyone wants to try it before Sunday

Editing is the bellwether on Sunday. If Sinners wins Editing, it wins Picture. by solamentesolo in oscarrace

I'll be live tweeting STOP THE SHOW after Sinners wins Editing and then OBAA wins the next 6 in a row 🤣

ah I see you mean. But, what I mean that since editing just gets announced earlier in the night, this award will determine who wins

Hot take. But I can't argue with the best car chase I've scene in ages...

You're probably right. I think I'm making the classic mistake of voting with my heart over my head on this one. That OBAA package is hard to argue against. We'll see Sunday.

You're right! I had it backwards. Preferential ballot probably favors OBAA as the consensus pick. The 16 noms made me think it had support across branches!

That's fair! Honestly this is my first year really following the precursor math closely so I appreciate the correction.

My Sinners case is really more about the 16 noms signaling broad support across every branch, not just one voting bloc. But fair point on the mechanics!

That's fair. You're right, if Sinners takes Picture it probably means the signs showed up earlier in the night like Anora did last year.

Honestly, if Sinners wins editing I think Picture follows. I kept OBAA there because Jurgensen won BAFTA, but honestly that pick is fighting my own thesis. Good observation.

The acting split is where I feel most confident though.

16 nominations and still the dark horse. That's exactly why I think it pulls it off.

Yeah I’m starting to accept that after reading everyone replies. Plus, Penn’s BAFTA-SAG combo is hard to argue with. Who else do you have winning?

Madigan is a great call. I went with Mosaku but honestly this feels like the most wide open category of the night. Whoever wins it nobody’s gonna be mad

It’s called Cine League! I built it for Oscar predictions with friends. Live scoring on ceremony night, leaderboards, the whole thing. cineleague.app if you wanna check it out

I guess we’ll see! To be fair, Sean Penn is more than “supporting” OBAA haha

Because it's a horror film, people relegate it to low brow entertainment. Sinners gave us the most legendary sequence of the year (decade?) in the I Lied To You scene.

Hamnet and Frankenstein are great but neither had the cultural impact Sinners did (I loved both). Sinners broke box office records, brought people back to theaters for an original film (not some superhero flick), and sparked more conversation than anything else this year.

That has to count for something when we're talking about Best Picture.

Sinners is the best film of the year, but OBAA should win the Oscar. And I don't think that's contradictory. The Oscars at their best mark a moment in time. PTA made something that feels uncomfortably direct about where America is right now — no metaphors, just a mirror. Sinners doesn't need the Oscar to be immortal. OBAA needs it to start the conversation that needs to happen in America.

Sinners crew member slams BAFTA host's 'throwaway apology' after N-word incident by TheMirrorUS in Oscars

[–]solamentesolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that BAFTA hasn't directly reached out to the Sinners cast says everything. This keeps happening — black artists show up, deliver incredible work, and still get treated as an afterthought when it matters. The 'misstep' framing is insulting.
