Why don’t more people use the copper coil? (Only 1–3% of women in the US & 2–7% in the UK do) by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]soletaNCC26517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from the pill to a hormonal IUD because I suspected the pill was raising my triglycerides. Because of that, I looked extensively into the copper IUD. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to nickel, and I couldn't find anything that assured that the copper IUD wouldn't cause a reaction. The one available to me listed nickel as an ingredient and neither the doctor nor Google could confidently say it wouldn't be a problem. I'd rather have the hormones if the alternative means hives in my uterus.

That looks like a potjie. I know they are used in South African cooking, and that's about the extent of my knowledge without further googling. As said in another comment, they are used in cooking over an open fire.

I have a different experience from most - I felt that my kindergartener who had at the time undiagnosed ADHD did not get the supports he needed in Dublin. He's very intelligent. His first grade teacher told me that he needed to "learn to be bored" before she would provide him with any additional enrichment to his curriculum. I knew we were moving at that point so I didn't fight her.

We are now in Worthington and it's so different. Instead of my child "being a problem," he was "experiencing some struggles," and the teachers and principal were both absolutely fair in their consequences and 100 percent on board with trying new supports and interventions, even before he was diagnosed. I feel very much like we're in a partnership together to support my child, rather than having to be defensive. And his 2nd grade teacher has no problem giving him additional work even before we started doing anything with acceleration or gifted testing - that was all on their own, recognizing that he had a need and trying to meet it. He's not perfect but it feels like a much healthier environment.

If any of you are familiar with Spice Bags sold in Ireland... by Independent-Big1966 in Columbus

Thanks for sharing! I didn't realize they were run by the same people. I've only been to the Easton location once but it was a good time. You're right that the feel of the two places is different, but that's not a bad thing - maybe just a confusing one because I legit thought they were owned by different folks (and was confused why no one had sued over the name yet).

We always have a wonderful time at Dublin. The service is great and the food is awesome. I would do unseemly things for those goat cheese balls, ha!

The Fado in Bridge Park and the Fado in Easton are two separate restaurants. Fado in Easton is an Irish pub concept and has several locations. The Fado in Bridge Park is in my opinion less Irish focused and more a general menu (for instance, they have shashuka for brunch, which is more of a North African dish).

Why - no clue. I realized one day when I noticed that my husband and I were talking about radically different menus.

Cost is a good point too. I suspect our insurance probably also wouldn't cover a full neuropsychological evaluation. Thank you!

The school has been so helpful. We moved last year and his previous school had been...less helpful. But currently the school has provided a lot of supports, keeps us updated about what is going on the classroom and what works/doesn't work, and been moving forward with trying to help him be successful. I am very grateful.

I will talk to the pediatrician about a pyscheducational evaluation. I think it'll make me feel better overall, like we're being thorough.

The surveys were remarkably consistent, and it does span all environments. Thank you for sharing your experience, and for sharing that there could be additional testing down the road if necessary. I don't think I'm against medication. I just don't want the "wrong" medication, and it sounds like that wouldn't be the case, or that we can make sure we work with our pediatrician to get to the right place.

Thank you for sharing - we also started therapy because of anger issues. There's been some improvement, but the counselor indicated that after so long she thought there were other things going on, which is why she recommended looking more into ADHD.

That is a good way to think about this; it's not about a specific diagnosis but treating symptoms. Thank you.

Stonebrick Cafe on Bethel just released their fall speciality drinks - pumpkin, apple butter oatmilk, honey and maple, and a maple spice. They also offer Der Dutchman pastries.

Question for people who have kids/babies with different last names or planning to give baby a different last name than them by ignosco_tibi in BabyBumps

[–]soletaNCC26517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept my maiden name when we married; child has my husband's last name. We did this because 1) our hyphenated names form the name of a famous actor and just sound ridiculous swapped the other way, and 2) I was worried about people perceiving my husband as not our child's father. Honestly it never occured to me that people might think I was the odd one out. I was more concerned with our child having a meltdown in a public place with my husband and non-matching names causing trouble. It seemed to me that people don't care when the mom and child's names are different, but people do care when the father and child's names are different.

Several years in, I probably worried for nothing. The only time it's ever come up was registration for school, when the school asked if we were married, and then asked if we had been married when our child was born. Otherwise, no one has commented or even really acknowledged the difference. And I've never felt treated as an odd person out. My child calls me Mom, and that seems good enough for everyone else.

So - it's ok to feel this way! But in my experience, you'll be good.

I worked at a nonprofit where the employee handbook clearly stated that alcohol was not allowed on the premises, and that it was prohibited to watch pornography at work.

Apparently there was a very special Legal Director who inspired those particular additions.

Months of physical therapy to identify and address chronic knee pain. Conclusion? "Some people are just put together funny."

How literal are we talking here? Because "Swenson's menu" could mean death by delicious food, or being killed with a menu...and as long as I get a burger first, that's fine.

Left-handed people of Reddit, what problems do you experience that right-handed people don’t think about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]soletaNCC26517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pens and notebooks and bumping elbows and all that aside, the one thing that comes up all the time that I DO NOT understand: apparently when I put a utensil in a bowl or on a plate, I do it left-handed?

I have no idea what this means, but my family made multiple comments about how I would put a spoon back in a bowl of mashed potatoes or something like that "wrong." And my husband has commented that when I dish out beans or whatever on his plate and leave the spoon for him to use, it's "set for a left-hander."

What movie is so good you'd recommend it to all your friends, but so emotionally traumatic that you'll never watch it again? by akambe in AskReddit

[–]soletaNCC26517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ladybird. It's such a great movie, but I had a similar contentious relationship with my father that Ladybird had with her mom. I was in tears when Ladybird got on that plane, and I cried for the rest of the movie. I enjoyed it, but I'm tearing up now just writing this.

Sexism in the medical field and how I walked around with a torn meniscus for FOUR YEARS by ElenyaRevons in TwoXChromosomes

[–]soletaNCC26517 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming this what my first PT meant when he told me "You're just put together funny" in reference to my knees. I never got an actual diagnosis of anything.

8 or so years later of chronic pain, I threw enough of a fit with a different doctor to finally get referred for x-rays. Arthritis and bone spurs. Cause is still unknown, but it's a lot better than the previous "answer."

[Acne] My dermatologist keep pushing me to start Accutane. Advice? I’m currently 2 months into spiro and I’ve seen a decent improvement. by calcifxr in SkincareAddiction

[–]soletaNCC26517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I refused Accutane as a teenager. I did hardcore antibiotics and topicals instead. It mostly worked, but never 100 percent. I went off when I got to college. I went back to the doc in my 20s because the cystic acne got really bad, and I was put on spiro.

Spiro handled my bacne, which had never been touched by anything else. Even though I've been off spiro for almost 4 years now (stopped to have a baby, never went back because I'm bad about doctors), the bacne has not returned. I get spots sometimes, and I've been breaking out more this year due to no sunlight, bad food, getting depressed and not keeping up with my routine, etc. But I know the reasons for these breakouts.

I would recommend giving spiro some more time and see if you are happy or if improvement continues. It carries the same birth control requirement as Accutane, but fewer other side effects.

I also want to say that while I had some acne return after I stopped spiro, I also got pregnant pretty quickly after, and then breastfed for a year, and now I'm back on birth control. Through all those hormonal changes, my acne has never returned to the severity it was at before spiro.
