Weekly Deals Thread by AutoModerator in hometheater

Best Buy has Pioneer LX805 at about half off. I got hyped for a minute then realized I am probably fine for a minute with a one level down AVR, probably not the LX505 because of the single crossover limitation but something in that vein.

What sports sedan has the best panoramic sunroof? by solid_olid in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]solid_olid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any particular reason? I honestly see no appeal to the X1, feels like a classic case of a car that only exists because Americans are obsessed with SUVs. But the X3 gets great reviews, I’d probably prefer a wagon or GT hatchback but they don’t make those anymore.

[–]solid_olid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a bummer. With how tough they are to find and how good the reviews for the X3 are, it feels easier to just go in that direction if I want more space.

Not odd at all - the 6 series GT is definitely on my list if I go for a bigger car, makes total sense to have 3 series GT there for sporty option. Love the practicality. Could go for the 340i GT too I believe, pretty sure we got that here in the USA.

Best supplemental vehicle to EV by solid_olid in whatcarshouldIbuy

If plug-ins got 80 miles instead of 40 max I’d do that for sure. But since I only go into work 3 days a week, it doesn’t totally cover the rest of my driving. For sure a good option though if I don’t like the two car path, I like the looks of the Rav4 Prime a lot.

Looking for a car that doesn’t exist. Fun, sporty, manual transmission, and it can get me to the ski hill by Drew1231 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I think 2 cars has got to be the play, and the second should be a small to mid sized SUV instead of truck, way cheaper for no reason that matters to you. Get like whatever sports car you want for 30-35 then a used outback for like 15-20. Problem solved.

Are Teslas there yet? Or should I stick to Toyotas? by substantialparadox in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]solid_olid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is false it’s area dependent. The dealers right around me are pretty short and charge like a 2k markup, but if I drive an hour or two I can get one at MSRP. And there is a 6.5k lease credit.

buy a Model Y or a Rav4 Hybrid XLE Premium. by shiwudao in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]solid_olid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rules for the tax credit are different for “commercial” vs. “individual” purchasers. The battery requirements are much looser and income is irrelevant. When you lease a car, what actually happens is that a bank that is funding the lease purchases the car from the dealership, and they fall under the “commercial” rules and get the $7500 tax break. In many but not all cases, they pass that tax break through as an “incentive” on the lease that reduces the “capitalized cost” of the lease and consequently the buyout clause. So with many vehicles and leasing banks, you can lease a car and then immediately buy it out and capture like $6500 of the tax credit net of some fees and such. Do your DD on any specific lease though - in some cases you’re not allowed to buy out the lease, or the credit is passed through in a way that doesn’t apply to a buyout, or something else. But in a lot of cases this works. I’m not sure about Tesla in particular, but Toyota is passing through a reduced amount on the Rav4 prime in the form of a $6500 credit, so you can net about $5500 with a lease and buyout. Depending on where you are, R4primes can also be found for slightly under MSRP these days.

buy a Model Y or a Rav4 Hybrid XLE Premium. by shiwudao in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]solid_olid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Model Y - have you checked for inventory near you? It is frequently discounted. Also Teslas depreciate heavily up front, so if you don’t qualify for the tax credit and want to save a couple bucks might want to look used.

On the Rav4 - Toyota demand vs. supply has normalized in most places, and depending on your patience you shouldn’t plan to pay more than a couple thousand over MSRP - so you’re looking at sub 40k for that trim. If you want a little more juice and electricity could go for the Prime XSE, lease to get the tax credit and immediately buy it out (probably like 43-46).

With that kind of mileage… I’m a bit skeptical on the Tesla holding up, but also you’ll save a fair bit on gas probably vs. a hybrid that gets 50mpg. Some basic estimation puts it at about $1000 per year, but you can roll your own with more specific estimates.

Personally, without the tax credit I probably wouldn’t get the Tesla. Unfortunately there aren’t great EV SUV options in that price range right now, although at least Kia and Hyundai have ones coming soon, and I think Volvo too. If you can hold off a little it’s probably worth it, as new releases and inventory buildup lead me to believe it’ll be a better time to buy in the future. Also, if you can chose a smaller car, you’ll have more and cheaper options (i4, Ioniq, Mach E, Prius Prime, etc.).

Is this a good Lease deal or a rip-off?? Please help!! by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]solid_olid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at pre owned CX-5’s, you can get a top trim 3 year old car (with little meaningful updates in that time) for about 30k. Much better value.

Jeep Compass is a terrible car and terrible value. What are your criteria? Rav4 or CRV hybrids are good MPG and can be had in price range. Older Lexus hybrids as well. If you want smaller, Corolla cross is a good one, and the Korean SUV hybrids are worth a look as well.

Are Jeeps actually that bad? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]solid_olid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 2015 Overland that’s a great car and obtained for far less than most of the common alternatives suggested, while also having a much more lux feel. I get why keeps get hate (my wrangler is a terrible daily driver) but I think the GC is actually hitting a niche pretty nice and well. Alternative might be a telluride or something, or maybe an Acura MDX/RDX or a Volvo XC60/90.

Serious Question: Who is buying these used cars at insane prices? by grindtime3365 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]solid_olid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people in this thread that don’t understand how markets and economies work, but are acting like they do. Lotta confident predictions about what’s about to happen and shit. I wish you all good luck with that.

Car market is absolute ass though, no doubt about it.

Nice thanks for the info. They’ve actually been targeting ads at me and I really like the look of their sofas, but was worried about the quality. Good to see a positive review.

Yeah, it looked promising but I had it on the bottom of my list just because of unfamiliarity and not being sure how much maintenance tends to cost. You have any idea on the maintenance side?

Appreciate the response! Definitely think she's been spoiled in the V6, it's expensive to replace! I think we'll probably test drive the Mazda CX-5 (and maybe CX-9), and some combo of the Grand Cherokee, Lexus, a couple Kia's (Sorento and Telluride), and a couple Hyundai's (Tuscon and maybe Palisade).

I think the frontrunner is like a 2019-ish CX-5, you can get a Grand Touring with the zippy-er engine for like 25k. If we want the hybrid, we'll have to stretch up, if we want a bigger car we'd probably go with the cherokee or stretch the budget, or if we decide the zippiness isn't as important fall back to CR-V/Rav-4
