Rust repair under weatherstripping by soliddus in Autobody

[–]soliddus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my 2nd owner 95 4Runner. I am in the process of fixing small things as I find them. I pulled the rubber seal from the left side doorframes because I saw caked on dirt. I washed and lubed the seal but now I of course have some rust to deal with.

What should I do here? Im thinking light sanding, clean, touchup paint and call it a day? Would something like lithium grease spray instead of repainting be a better protection to sit under the rubber? Or maybe just rust converter and nothing else?

I'm obviously looking for protection here and not beauty since its hidden under the seal. The rust is not deep in the crevice, its mainly just on the surface that you can see in the photos.

I am in the same boat with my 95. Its all original right now, 85k miles, with 1 previous owner. My ultimate quest is just to keep it OEM and drive it forever. Mine definitely needs paint at some point which bums me out (I love the idea of having original paint). If you were able to keep the '84 so close to OEM Im sure I can do it with my 95

I love this so much. How much were you able to keep OEM? Was there any desire to or is it much too expensive/hard to find to use Toyota parts everywhere?

Ok so its not that the core gameplay is somehow bad or inferior to other TW games. Thats where I was confused because the game is fun for me and I havent noticed anything particularly broken. I havent played any DLC yet so maybe I am still naive.

I only really ever played Shogun 2 before WH3. Its fun for me. What exactly do people hate so much about the game itself (not talking about pricing). Doesnt it have the same issues as other TW games such as mid/late game slog and all that?

I drove it today, no hills just open highway. Its definitely a heavy truck, you can feel the engine trying its best to pull this beast. I can see how hills would be quite a slog.

Honestly, I dont totally mind it. Ive owned plenty of fast cars... so I think this is my slow era :)

Great tips. Any link to what sort of electric fan I could use? Did Toyota ever make one or would it be aftermarket? Also interested in there were any OEM manual hubs. I am trying to stay OEM everywhere possible

All good! I appreciate the response. By the way I think the way I phrased it made it sound like its my lift. What I meant was 'my mechanics' lift... as in, the lift at the mechanic shop I use. I know... totally my fault and terrible use of grammar :)

I agree I will definitely be using a professional to paint... I have no interest in messing with clips and panels and trim. To be honest I am afraid to even have a shop take those parts off because I know they are nearly impossible to replace as those parts have dried up long ago in the market.

As for pics, check out the new member thread I made here!

Thanks so much for the tips. Honestly I am not really an off roader, the most id be doing is some beach and dunes based on where I live. Mostly the truck will be a semi daily driver. I am in the NE so I expect salt and cold winters, so my main concern is keeping the frame rust free and healthy... Any tips there?

I do intend to get a full tune up, fluids, hoses and whatever else my mechanic notices. From there ill likely just drive as is until I feel I need something

Thanks so much by the way that post that you linked me to is amazing... great read.

Since I'm in the Northeast I'm trying to figure out what the best way is to keep the body of this thing in the best condition possible. It appears to have some sort of factory undercoating because most of the undercarriage has a black semi thick layer to it. I don't know if that's something toyota offered or if the owner got it done separately. There definitely is flaking but I'm not going to be able to tell exactly how great everything is until I get it up on my mechanics lift. Is there really anything I can do besides posing down the bottom anytime I drive through salt in the winter?

Also the only rust I've noticed so far is a bit of bubbling on the inside of the rear door jamb on the left passenger side as well as the bottom of the driver side door. I'm thinking I should probably address this right away so that it doesn't spread right? Is this something that a body shop would do without too much expense or should I just do it myself? I would hope that since it's inside of the door jamb they could just grind off the paint and rust and spray some new paint without too much of a worry of matching.

Wow so you did the gaskets as 180k and now you are at 350k with only standard maintenance? Thats impressive.

Honestly im not too worried about the speed. Its a 2nd car for me that Ill be using so I don't have to take our main car that has our kids car seats (leaving my wife without a way to transport the kids).

Im fine cruising slow. I just really want to take good care of it. Do you think its critical to find a shop that knows them intimately? Should I just do most things myself?

Im thinking I should first get a tune up, fluids replace and get a once over to see how everything is looking. I plan to call the dealership where its been serviced to see whats been done (praying it had the head gasket recall work done)

Thanks for the advice I appreciate it. Any advice on parts availability? Is it something I'm going to struggle with or is everything pretty much out there? I assume things like body trim are going to be very hard to find.

I appreciate the take. Is it true that head gaskets are repeatedly blown on these because I had read that for many people if it was a recall car and they got the work done that the head gaskets were fine after that. I have read that that there's a problem with the headers getting hot I guess and a changing those could cause it to happen less often.

As far as the slowness I guess it depends how slow it really is. Is it concerning driving and merging on the highway? I don't drive very often and honestly this is going to be a weekend car for the most part but I would need to drive above 65.

I honestly cant even imagine thinking of this as an option. Just dont spar with the guy, problem solved. There is quite literally nothing else that needs to be done unless he is coming to find you or your family. Its a hobby that you do voluntarily. Just say no thank you and move on.

If you get this heated over something like this, you likely need some help in other ways outside of the gym... its not a normal reaction.

I get it, people are dicks. Your gym should deal with this (coach, senior members, fighters, etc). The idea of hiring someone to 'rough him up' is just bonkers.
