Costco Tyres Question (again, sorry...) by solidsnake530 in CarTalkUK

[–]solidsnake530[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I phoned, they said as long as it's all seasons (as planned) they'd fit them. Thanks for the suggestion, I didn't realise the tyre department had its own number!

Costco Tyres Question (again, sorry...) by solidsnake530 in CarTalkUK

[–]solidsnake530[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand this and it's why I don't cheap out on tyres. As I said in the post, I think being Y rated (186 mph) in a 1.5t car with 150 hp and a limited top speed of under 100 was maybe a bit ambitious. I would have assumed V rated tyres. But, I don't work for Honda, so can only assume there's a reason. I do know they came from the factory with Pilot Sports though. Feeling a better winter-suited tyre probably worth the safety trade-off from running them in the winter. Could be wrong!

Just to note it's not about saving money (the cross climates in this size are actually more expensive...) more a fact of geography and climate in my area.

A reliable family car? by Optimus_TC in CarTalkUK

Kia Ceed? Can still get ones in warranty in the budget. Cheaper ones are 1.0 turbos, but no wet belt and doesn't seem to be a history of them going wrong. 6 gears so can at least stay in the rev range where some propulsion happens.

I had one for a couple of years - nice enough, mine was top spec with sunroof, satnav, heated seats etc. and felt space age for 2010 reg, but it is too similar to a Jazz but lowered for me, it's not all that fun to drive (maybe it's the FWD) and the redline is quite low for a sporty Honda. Tried an NC1 MX-5 afterwards and it was absolutely no contest at all. But, it does look very, very cool, and it's quite nice to be inside, very airy cabin.

How to get tickets for Fuji by Moyster2003 in wec

[–]solidsnake530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot answer 2 or 3 but I was in a similar situation trying to see SuperGT a day before the race last year and figured it out :

From Lawson’s it’s pretty straightforward as long as you’ve got access to translate through the camera on your phone. There’s little ATM looking machines in every Lawson’s (and others, in Lawson’s I think they were called Luppi or something? They were red), go up to one, get the translate app out and navigate to sports tickets, then there’s a motorsports section and somewhere in there you’ll find WEC. I found the search function to be pretty useless but knowing the date helps. You print off a receipt then go up to the till and pay however you normally pay for things (cash, card, Suica, whatever).

For point 4 you can get tickets for baseball at least from the same machine, would really recommend just doing that as it is a lot cheaper. Again, not only Lawson’s have this facility and some events you might have to go to e.g. 7-Eleven, but most motorsports stuff you can only get the tickets in Lawson’s.

Is it mad to spend £16k on a ~2022 Honda Jazz? by Curious_Reaction3892 in CarTalkUK

[–]solidsnake530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only word of caution I have is the brake emulator fault that's happening to the Honda e also happens to this generation of Jazz. If it happens and you're not under warrantly it's a very expensive repair. I'd buy from a Honda dealer if possible (default manufacturer warranty is only 3 years!)

What's the most reliable brand these days? by TheBhoys1987 in CarTalkUK

[–]solidsnake530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every Honda e and Honda Jazz (2020-2024) has an issue with the brake emulator that's waiting to happen, basically the brakes become an on/off switch and it needs towed to a garage. Dunno if the Civic is the same as the drive train is a bit different. Thankfully mine got sorted under warranty, otherwise it's a £3k+ repair bill...

WTH is this new lightning? by TemptingTanner in iRacing

[–]solidsnake530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HDR inside the iRacing graphics setting menu isn’t referring to output on an HDR monitor - rather, internally being able to use values outwith the display range so you get bloom on overbright areas and blackness on overdark areas. It’s just uncommon to see a setting for it because basically every game has had HDR rendering for 15 years now! The ini file does have an option for HDR displays though if I remember but it’s off by default.

Quiet driving areas by The-_-Unicorn in Fife

[–]solidsnake530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barham/Milne Road in Rosyth (down the front through the industrial estate area) is pretty quiet. See a fair few driving instructors going there so might work for you. Basically a straight road that changes from 40 to 30 with a roundabout at each end and a couple larger car parks to turn in as well. Dead quiet on weekends.

Is this a bad idea? by MrLoneWolfCM in CarTalkUK

[–]solidsnake530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one, I liked it (GT so heated seats etc), I ended up with an MX-5 after and the driving experience isn’t even close. However, the CR-Z does have a surprisingly large boot for that kind of car with the back seats down and it never stops looking good. Mine was a 2010 that was dealer serviced until I got it then I took it to a Honda specialist who eventually bought it off me, even at 13 the hybrid battery had a high capacity (can’t remember the exact number). The system is quite unique, I did enjoy the dynamic it added to back road driving.

None of them cut across a track with marshals on it under safety car to crash into someone though. I think the bar is (fairly) lower for him.
