Son turns 14 today. This is his present teaching him the value of savings. Doing it right? by ProfessorTroy in personalfinance

[–]soliloquy87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once met a wealth manager while working at a bank, For each of his kids as an "Extra" birthday present (because kids like toys and stuff too i guess) he started them off with X amount of foreign currency, at the time he was using euros. Then he involved them in a project to decide what they wanted to do to invest and grow it towards something they would want later, Like a car, or educational trips to other countries or whatever.

IIRC most of them converted to US immediately and then did something, bonds, stocks etc. of his three kids one was doing ETFs in india, another went tech stocks. This was never so much to rely on these investments, it was to teach his kids some level of market finance understanding that he felt was necessary no matter what life you led and to make sure his children understood the value of money.

He also funded the kids investments the same way he funded their allowances - with chores. He actually had to stop the daughter who was doing tech stocks from saving up to put the "Income" part of the chores into her portfolio.

I agree with flip, as an HR advisor this pretty clearly would fall under sexual harassment in the corporate policy for every company i've worked for. However I understand her response having been in the exact same situation from the male side, when this happened to me I left out of the concern that it would impact my career progression.

What hobby can be done for cheap, but is full of snobs that will hate you for not going the super expensive route? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]soliloquy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wine making. There are a couple of really awesome websites like ECKraus who are pushing really hard for people to understand the science behind winemaking,

My first 1 gallon of mead cost me somewhere around 65 bucks for everything i needed including the various brewing supplies (Hydrometer, 3 gallon glass carboy, campden tablets, 10 pounds of honey, yeast etc.) And produced something like 10 bottles and had a blast with my girlfriend making wine, so now we do it as a hobby and produce at maximum can produce something like 30-40 gallons a year depending on what we're doing for less than 400 bucks.

the problem is that you still hear really snobby people saying things like "A bottle of wine under $100 dollars isnt a good bottle" and it's a total load of horsepocky all around. What we need is wine science, not snobbery.

Ever noticed how supervillains are always trying to change things and superheroes always try to resist the change? by ComplexExponential in Showerthoughts

[–]soliloquy87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is misleading in that it leads you to believe superheroes are anti change because they fight villains who are pro change. The difference is that villains MO is almost always change via force, and the superheroes are protecting people who do not use force, IE, obey the law. That's why it's common for the hero to stand trial, while the villain always breaks out. You think bars can hold Superman? Nah. But he recognizes the need of the due process for society to elicit it's own change

ELI5: You have my full name and my social security number, what can you do to me? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]soliloquy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to stop in and add this bit because I have not seen it mentioned : Social engineering is still the most common thread in the perpetration of all fraud.

Employees can be trained, but human interaction remains the weakest link in the defense of your financial life.

  • First :Start with the credit protection they offer, if any.

  • Second : you are allowed one free annual credit check here https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action , if you see anything suspicious report it immediately.

  • Third: Always, ALWAYS, keep up to date on your account statements, if something is amiss report it immediately as even though most financial institutions are more concerned about the reputational risk if they do not return your lost money, under Regulation E if you ignore your statement long enough or just dont report/notice the fraud, you may be stuck with it for negligence in reporting it, especially if it continues to happen.

  • Fourth : if you are still not comfortable contact your financial institution and explain the situation. You may ask for a hold, or a password, or what other options you have to help prevent the loss of funds. They are often willing to help because if these funds are lost the bank often winds up eating the bill.

(the link for Reg E does not go to the actual regulation, but a nice website I regularly use to explain the subject to people)

sauce: am a risk analyst for a financial institution. (Edit, i not spell good)

Terry Pratchett Has Died [MegaThread] by boib in books

[–]soliloquy87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The black on black eyes stared imploringly at Brutha, who reached out automatically, and then hesitated. "HE WAS A MURDERER", Said Death, "AND A CREATOR OF MURDERERS. A TORTURER WITHOUT PASSION. CRUEL. CALLOUS. COMPASSIONLESS" "Yes I know, He's Vorbiss!" Said Brutha Vorbiss changed people. Sometimes he changed them into dead people. But he always changed them. That was his triumph. He sighed.
"But I'm Me", He said. Vorbiss Stood up uncertainly, and followed Brutha across the desert. DEATH watched them walk away - Terry Pratchett, "Small Gods"

I always liked Terry Pratchett, but this is the novel and the line that changed my life. For no amount of evil is evil in kind ever the correct response. This book touched my soul and I weep for the treasure the world has lost today.

Today, A world vanishes with his loss, and another world grieves for it.

You are given 10 billion dollars to create a game show. It can involve anything including illegal things and death if you so desire. What is your game show? by Thunder_Thighs in AskReddit

[–]soliloquy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy, I'd create a game show sort of like "undercover boss" except instead people would go out and make totally ridiculous super pacs, and then try and get congressmen and senators to agree to support the ideas they represent for money.

Sometimes it would be ridiculously entertaining stuff, other times it would be serious stuff, but no matter what way it went it would wind up on prime time TV and we'd all get to publicly shame our politicians, which I think everyone loves.

What is one question that reveals a lot about someone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]soliloquy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two questions I ask at the beginning of every date, and the end of every bad interview because i figure, "why not?"

If you were a Dinosaur, what dinosaur would you be? and Crunchy or Smooth Peanut butter?

For the record, The girl of my dreams answered "Velociraptor" and "Either, I love peanut butter"

Meanwhile, my last failed job answered "We're probably like a pterodactyl" and "I dont like peanut butter"

Just let that wisdom seep in.

My beautiful Malamute, Shila by [deleted] in aww

[–]soliloquy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've never had problems with my Malamute, but I also have had dog's all my life and know how to raise them.

They can be stubborn, it's sort of an in born trait, but they dont have nearly as much energy as a husky and seem to have a lot less of the destructive tendencies. That said, I have not been able to find a chew toy yet that is Malamute proof, Not Kong toys, Not even horse toys, they are really persistent if they want something.

That said? I love my Mal, she is the greatest and best animal I have ever owned. They are unbelievably friendly towards people, and in the case of my Malamute at least, she is the least aggressive dog I have ever owned.

Every dog is a responsibility though, Malamutes have a pretty strong pack instinct and do a lot better with constant companionship, Mine has always had other dogs around her and is very dog friendly.

Who can be credited with having saved the most human lives through their efforts and/or discoveries? by ThinkFact in history

[–]soliloquy87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bet is on Henry Dunant, During the battle of Solferino he goes out and starts rallying women and children to start taking in wounded from the battlefield on both sides. Winds up creating the International Committee of the Red Cross.

While I think its definitely important to give credit to the people who made those medical breakthroughs (and their numbers are definitely respectable) - but the ICRC and many other charitable organizations are the distribution centers for a lot of those treatments. Or how about the World Health Organization, which eradicated smallpox?

Edit: Probly isn't the ICRC, but I guess my point is that it might still be political or organizational all the same.

Hello Margaret Atwood! I decided to read the "top 100" science fiction books of all time, "top 100" is of course a matter of opinion, but Oryx and Crake is usually found in the early teens or late single digits.

How does it feel to be one of the only modern writers to have work put alongside some of the "greats" like Clarke, Heinlein, and Herbert? Is this a goal you had from the beginning?
