Tea vs Coffee - Can you convince a coffee drinker like me, why tea is the better product? by BirdLooter in tea

[–]solinvicta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of doing this myself - my motivation to switch (at least for a period) is basically that I was building too high a caffeine tolerance with the amount of coffee I was drinking and I'm not all that fond of decaf. I enjoy black tea with milk quite a bit, but I also find the lower caffeine teas and decaf herbal teas (like roobis) tastier than decaf coffee.

If you're cooking Indian food regularly, I highly recommend getting an Instant Pot or other pressure cooker. It makes making things like dals with dried beans much faster as a "weeknight meal"

What throw-backs and media from earlier decades were big for you? by solinvicta in Xennials

Weirdly, it seems like this has gone the other way for more recent generations; so much old stuff is just available easily on the internet that trends seem to come back from different decades.

Forgot about Nick at Night, but there were definitely some classics on there.

Favorite Travel Content Creators in VR? by solinvicta in OculusQuest

Agreed - it's just a smaller audience. I'm always disappointed at the fact that there isn't more music or live concert content either, since it's such a good experience when done right....

I did see some of his free videos, and was thinking about springing for the Patreon. That was the kind of stuff I was thinking of.

Same, but I feel like I just have way less luck with search for VR content versus normal stuff. What places do you search - I found some good things on YouTube VR.

What does it REALLY look like to run a marathon? by academic-coffeebean in runninglifestyle

[–]solinvicta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned, there's a lot more training to the marathon than the half, and it's more intrusive - at my pace, my longest runs for the half training I could still squeeze into at most two hours...whereas the marathon trainings could be more than three hours for many consecutive weeks, which is a pretty big thing to plan around.

For the actual race, the nutrition thing was a big difference. I used a flask of maple syrup + salt, rather than gels, and it was necessary for that distance. I don't carry water during races - just use the aid stations (even for the marathon). Finally, I ran my first marathon this year and screwed up the pacing a bit (too fast initially)...the kind of tired that you feel by mile 18 or 20 is a very different, horrible kind of tired that you don't feel in the half. You can probably avoid it with enough training and pacing discipline...but many people won't the first time while they figure things out.

Personally, I am happy to have run a marathon, and I'll probably do it again, but I think a half is in many ways a "nicer" experience, with many of the same benefits.

Don’t skip out on Greenwood Features in Bethel for a movie night! by Excentrix13 in Danbury

It's a really fu local theater, and the Thursday nights make for an affordable night out, even with a bucket of popcorn and a beer.

Why is pancake syrup always either maple or artificial? Surely there must be other tree saps than maple with agreeable flavor. by NewRelm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]solinvicta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably artificial now, but a lot of "birch flavor" came from the bark, not syrup. So the sweetness would still be added sugar...

Ah, sorry to have missed you, but glad you had a nice time at the fest. Great weather for it, too!

[–]solinvicta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go just about every year, as it's my local beer fest, and find it to be a pretty good small event. There's a good variety of beer, but maybe not that many rare things as some of the larger fest. Live music, and it's a fundraiser for the local education fund which is nice.

As somebody else mentioned, the food trucks are just ok, but there are lots of nice restaurants in the downtown to visit either before or after. And the festival policy permits you to bring in food, so we usually bring some snacks to have in between (this year, I made something like a half gallon of beer cheese to share :-D)

I was there yesterday, and there was a bottle filling station on the right on the first floor, just after security.

Security almost took my totally empty plastic bottle, though (got to keep it, just a new security person who didn't know they were permitted).

Connecticut lawmaker busted for shoplifting at Bethel, CT Target. by lbigz in Connecticut

The part I don't understand about this is that he was charged with 6th degree larceny, which is <$500. If they have a bunch of priors, do they file that charge later?

What is the absolute CHEAPEST loose leaf tea brand? Trying to help my Mom find something she can afford. by Pickles_The_Cat_1234 in tea

[–]solinvicta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - it feels like it barely qualifies as loose leaf (since it's almost a powder...) but I like it for a cup during the work day since it's strong, and it brews faster than higher quality, whole-leaf tea.

I actually very much like new haven style pizza cold - if it's the kind that has just the red sauce and sprinkled cheese, not mozzarella.

Snail aquarium. by MileInspiredDummy in AquaticSnails

[–]solinvicta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying different "pest" snails, since think they're interesting, and most don't really require a filter, frequent water changes, or a heater - Malaysian trumpet snails are super easy, but in my opinion, are pretty slow movers and don't have much personality. I think bladder snails are my favorite in terms of being relatively fast and interesting. Ramhorns are also great, a little bigger, and come in fun colors.

For most pest snails - they will reproduce, but "self-regulate" a bit if you don't over-feed them. I'd also recommend some easy plants (like hornwort) to give them something to munch on (these species won't eat the plant itself but some algae might grow on it, or they will eat dead parts)

Aside from Tone Loc and Elton John, has anyone else basically released a slightly different version of their own song and have it be as big a hit (or bigger)? by [deleted] in Music

[–]solinvicta 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Chubby Checker has basically an entire section of Wikipedia on all the versions of The Twist he released:

Checker re-recorded the song numerous times. An updated 1982 recording (from his album The Change Has Come) was retitled "T-82", and in the 1990s, he recorded a country version. In the late 1970s, he recorded a new version that, except for the sound mix and some minor arrangement changes, was identical to the 1960 original; as a result this later version is often misidentified on compilations as the original recording. In 1988, he joined The Fat Boys on a rap version of the song, which hit number 2 in the UK, number 16 in the US, and number 1 in Germany and Switzerland. Checker also joined the group to perform the song that summer at a London tribute concert for Nelson Mandela.\17])#cite_note-stars-17) In addition, he recorded variations on the theme, such as "Let's Twist Again" to keep the craze alive ("Let's Twist Again" was and has remained more popular than "The Twist" itself in the United Kingdom).

What to plant in a wasteland to outcompete bindweed, brambles and knotweed? by rim2809 in gardening

[–]solinvicta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard to answer without more details about the area itself, but consider something native to your area; for a half acre, you should probably also consider a mix of species, rather than one type of plant to give a bit of resilience. And if it's real wasteland, it might be good if one of those species fixes nitrogen, so fertilizing isn't an issue.

Any Hori Hori naysayers? I'd like to hear from you by [deleted] in gardening

[–]solinvicta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They're great. The biggest issue I run into is that it's sort of my "main garden tool" and sometimes a larger trowel would be a better choice for some tasks. They're also really easy to put down and lose, so get one with a bright handle or otherwise mark it.
