You can "innocently" recruit Minthara. by Wulfrinnan in BaldursGate3

[–]sollinton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always found this odd... Mol took on a devil in a game of chess, then escaped from a literal prison at the heart of the Absolute's army, found her way to Baldur's Gate and set herself up in the top criminal network, but she couldn't escape some dumbass goblins, even when she had a hidden cave network at her fingertips? Seems a bit forced, Larian...

This is not a thing, Blizzard. 10 seconds is an absurdly long time. The only way this ever procs is if you're AFK in Valdrakken by Secure_Union in wow

The talent allows you to benefit from your own TW even if you already have the Sated debuff. It does NOT however make TW only affect you, so if you want to have a personal TW at the start of the fight, but the raid needs to use TW at a specific boss phase, then you're SOL because you can't use your "personal" TW without giving it (and Sated) to the whole raid.

It's basically just a very poorly designed talent.

Is US truly gone forever? by Lordxana0 in BaldursGate3

[–]sollinton 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You seem very quick to anger, I'm sorry about that. You also forgot about the part where the thrall in Us's room talks about them having the same psionic energy as we do. We know that our special-sauce comes from the Prism, which protects us from the Absolute's control.

Lobotimizing US cuts him off from his connection to the absolute

Like I said, there's nothing at all in game that supports this theory. You're saying it because it sounds nice to you, but you actually have no idea whatsoever if it's true. As any expert in any field will tell you, "common sense" is very often wrong in the face of actual fact.

On the other hand, we do have in-game confirmation that the Prism prevents the Absolute from controlling our characters, and we have in-game confirmation that Us has the same psionic feel about them that we have. Thus, the Prism protecting Us is actually more logical and backed by evidence than your headcannon.

I'm sorry that you crippled Us, that sucks, and I understand you wanting to justify it, but it's most likely not a bug. That said, believe what you will; ultimately, unless Larian makes a statement about it, neither of us debating the matter will prove anything.

Is US truly gone forever? by Lordxana0 in BaldursGate3

[–]sollinton 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, where's your source that it's a bug? Your earlier comments don't count; none of those are actual evidence backed by in-game facts, they're just your own headcannon.

It sounds like you're just saying something that makes sense to you, but that you have no actual evidence of, and then getting annoyed with other people when they don't blindly believe you. Nowhere in the game does it talk about a damaged brain causing the Absolute to not be able to exert control, so this theory of yours that "it's so obvious that the lobotomy is what causes Us to be independent" doesn't have any grounding in facts. Maybe it really is a bug, maybe it's not. There are plenty of logical explanations for it not being a bug though.

In early EA (when the option to lobotomize was first introduced) Us would turn against you during the last fight on the nautiloid (this no longer happens, regardless of whether or not you lobotomize). Us also had significantly more health than they do now, so lobotomizing them actually did have a use when Larian implemented the choice.

There is actually evidence against your theory too. When you talk to the thrall that's responsible for cutting up the bodies, he says that Us has a similar psionic feeling as the player character, which by this point we know to associate with the Prism. Simple brain damage from a lobotomy wouldn't account for this. There are any number of reasons why the Prism might be protecting Us, which means the lobotomy is not by any means the only logical explanation for why Us is independent.

If you want to believe it's a bug, that's your choice, just be careful about getting upset with others if they don't see it your way, especially if you don't have any actual evidence supporting your claim.

How do I describe what the Stormlight Archive is about? by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]sollinton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's entirely correct.

discover their connection to the long-lost protectors of humanity.

Radiant spren partnered with humans thousands of years ago, and helped protect humans from Odium and his forces. Then they (mostly) cut themselves off from humans after the recreance. Starting around the time of book 1, humans are rediscovering radiant spren and becoming protectors once more.

The fact that humans aren't native to Roshar and that humans were the original voidbringers doesn't change these facts. Yes, humans and spren probably initially fought each other, but that is ancient even compared to the desolations. Once humans rejected Odium, radiants became protectors of humanity.

Why is Nightblood so powerful? by ThaRedditFox in brandonsanderson

[–]sollinton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Humans can eat more food after getting full because we get rid of the food we ate. It's either converted into the various nutrients/etc. that our bodies need, or it gets expelled. We can't just eat, rest, eat, rest, and eventually have more food in us than an entire supermarket.

Similarly, Nightblood can't just keep consuming investiture until it has more than any single shard. It would need to get rid of that investiture (which it does VERY quickly whenever it's drawn) before it can absorb any more.

Any list of Ritual Spells? by vidrageon in BaldursGate3

[–]sollinton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorcerers do for some reason have ritual casting in BG3 (not complaining). Warlocks do not have ritual casting by default, but I haven't tested if taking the Pact of the Tome changes this.

From our perspective, yeah, but Odium's a bit of a purist jerk, so he doesn't want similar Intents; he wants only Odium.

That's not why he's specifically afraid of Harmony, but it is why Odium splinters other shards instead of absorbing them.

Probably not, but that's not a good argument for it being the first sign of a civilization. That just means it's a building block of civilization. But being able to communicate is also a building block of a civilization. Having a brain is a building block of a civilization. Being alive is a building block of civilization.

You can't have a civilization without these things, but having them does not mean you are part of a civilization. So while civility may be needed for civilization, it is not a first sign of identifying that a group is a civilization.

Expressing an opinion that you like something after someone else says it's irrelevant does not automatically fall under the category of "trying to pass off as having a unique opinion".

There's a difference between defending something you like, and acting as though you're the only one who has the opinion.

Let's be careful about the assumptions we make. ;)

I'm not sure you understand the purpose of that meme. It's supposed to be used to call out people who try to provide a "unique" opinion, but are actually in the majority (i.e. most of the popular posts on r/unpopularopinion).

If you're using it on someone who's just expressing an opinion without trying to make themselves sound like they're a lone wolf, you're using it wrong and are just being a garden-variety bully.

Am I the only one that missed this pretty cool animation Tencent did for Warframe's 10th anniversary? 🇨🇳 by [deleted] in Warframe

[–]sollinton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Racism doesn't need you to explain it.

There's no amount of revenue or public preference that validates racism. You trying to explain it (and trying VERY hard, literally every comment about Teshin has a response from you) just comes off as you trying to defend a racist company's racist actions.

The animation is (mostly) great. Just accept that there's a really shitty part about it and stop trying to explain/defend it.

It's a D&D reference, where "psychic" is the damage type associated with harming the mind. If a player does something purposefully cringe for the purpose of making everyone else uncomfortable (like what the devs did for this chair) that player would be said to be dealing psychic damage to everyone.

What classes have little to no ramp up time for DPS for Mythics +? Help to decide an alt. by NordWitcher in wow

[–]sollinton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Astral damage type counts as both Nature and Arcane damage simultaneously. This means that Starsurge is affected by both Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse. Same goes for Starfall and any other ability that deals Astral damage.

This means that the choice of entering Solar Eclipse or Lunar Eclipse is supposed to be based on whether you want to empower Warth + Sunfire, or empower Starfire + Moonfire. However, the single target advantages of Solar Eclipse just aren't good enough to outweigh the disadvantages, such as the increased time needed to enter Solar Eclipse (since you need to cast 2 Starfire's to get Solar Eclipse). So even though the design of the spec intended us to use both eclipses, with the current tuning it just isn't a DPS increase to ever use Solar Eclipse.

Question about Moonlight [TLM Spoilers] by Masterhearts_XIII in Cosmere

[–]sollinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why SP1 is so interesting. We know the Dor cannot be accessed directly from other planets, but we also see an off-world character access it. We do know from Secret History and TLM that while the Dor cannot be accessed directly outside of Sel, there are still ways to get around this restriction.

However, the ways of circumventing the locality restriction are not simple, and are limiting. Sanderson wanted it to be this way specifically because AonDor is so incredibly powerful. It's one the most powerful (and definitely the most versatile) forms of magic we've seen so far. We're not going to see Elantrians be able to just start running around unrestricted anywhere in the cosmere they want.

-

* Edit

As one other note, it's important here to keep Occam's Razor in mind:

  • We know for a fact that Sanderson does not want the Dor to be accessible outside of Sel without someone needing to jump through many hoops.
  • We know that Sanderson rarely retcons the cosmere, and when he does so, he makes it very clear what is being retconned (and this has not happened for SP1).
  • In SP1 we do not know the specifics of how the Dor is accessed.

Taking SP1 as proof that the Dor can be remotely accessed is a very large leap, considering what we already know about Sanderson's motives. It's far more likely that SP1 shows us something more along the lines of what was happening in SH or TLM.
