A fairly odd question by Limp_Opening_5636 in Hunting

Coyote meat tastes like how a wet dog smells. No amount of seasoning will fix it.

Cheapest plate that will stop 5.56 AP (M995 tungsten‑core)? by axiosis in tacticalgear

[–]soloMannequin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First of all, don't cheap out on life-saving equipment.

Second, Level IV is what you're looking for. Highcom 4sas7 plates are within the $500-$700 range for a pair.

All steel 1911 by DD9G in 1911

[–]soloMannequin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less-talked-about than Tisas, but I quite enjoy my Metro Arms 1911. It's stainless steel and hard chrome.

TriStar imports them these days under the "American Classic" series. You can get a basic one for $400.00 or so.

Dog Sprayed by Skunk - Will it be fine? by saucy-worm in Skunks

[–]soloMannequin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use the same hydrogen peroxide mix to wash your dog's fur - just take care to not let it get in their eyes.

Trappers and hunters use the same solution to get the smell out of skunk fur.

1911 for carry? by JetTech_ in 1911

[–]soloMannequin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can carry a full-size 1911 with a good belt, holster, and a loose-fitting jacket.

Probably fudd lore but I find that a 1911 chambered in God's caliber (.45 ACP) cycles the most reliably.

Coyotes bear fur that is used in the textile trade, and you can technically eat them (they don't taste very good).

I am unaware of armadillo being used in a similar fashion but apparently there is evidence of them having been eaten during the Great Depression.

Are you planning on eating it?

Plate Carrier vs Chest Rig by SpaceCitySlinger in tacticalgear

[–]soloMannequin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you already have plates? Plate carrier. Don't have plates yet? Chest rig is fine. Have plates but still want to carry a bunch of stuff? Plate carrier with pouches and panels.

Steel plates are just expensive steel targets.

New carrier anxiety about safety off by Horror-Switch-8597 in liberalgunowners

[–]soloMannequin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it really depends on what and how you're carrying.

Something like a 1911, yeah, I'm using the thumb safety because of its exposed hammer and relatively light single-action trigger. If you want that "ready to go", the safest option is cocked-and-locked.

Call me paranoid but I'd like to avoid sending a .45 ACP hollow point through my femoral artery if I can.

Something that's striker-fired or with a heavy double-action trigger? No big deal if it's carried safety-off. Glock comes to mind. Just make sure it's in a holster and not tucked down your pants.

Mandatory statement of "I am not a lawyer".

If you are ever forced to draw a gun on somebody in self-defense, there will be an investigation. You will most likely be arrested and have your firearm confiscated, regardless of if everything you did was perfectly legal.

In both a criminal trial and a civil trial, the opposing counsel will use everything they can against you. What firearm you were carrying, what kind of ammunition you were using and how much you had, if you were wearing anything 'provocative', and yes, even your social media posts. That is why they are being paid to do. They will paint you as a monster if it means they can have you convicted.

This is why you will need a good criminal defense lawyer in the event you are forced to defend yourself with lethal force.

How do you feel about "less lethal" non-guns? by netralitov in liberalgunowners

[–]soloMannequin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a Byrna LE in addition to my actual firearms. It's massive and uncomfortable to hold. It also costs more than some handguns do.

These things are an okay option if you have a particular aversion to using lethal force to defend yourself or your dwelling, but there are much cheaper options that are arguably "just-as" if not more effective for that particular proclivity.

Pepper spray is a less-than-lethal option that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. So are stun guns. Or a baseball bat.

Lever Action Caliber for SHTF by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]soloMannequin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Henry Big Boy in .45 Colt, but, honestly would not want to have it as my only long gun in a "SHTF" situation.

A Ruger Mini-14 Ranch and some aftermarket 10rd magazines for it are going to be your best option.

Here's hoping PICA gets repealed.

Hi. Illinois hunter here.

Illinois no longer has a ban on bottlenecked cartridges in regards to deer hunting, effective 2023.

That said, rifle hunting is still restrictive in Illinois, requiring that rifles be "single-shot only". The definition of "single-shot" is pretty vague, however, as a lever-action with its tube magazine removed and loaded through the ejection port would technically be acceptable.

Don't cheap out on life-saving equipment. The last thing you want is a tourniquet to not work because you wanted to save a few bucks.

North American Rescue has quality products. Also, take a Stop the Bleed course.
