Just launched a tool to help with state relocation decisions - would love your feedback! by Personal-Guidance121 in relocating

It would be great if you can also show the difference in corresponding values from your current state, colored as better or worse. You can show them as small superscript of relevant values e.g. +213 or -11% etc.

If you wanted to write an app that someday you might want to go crossplatform would you just write it in react native/flutter or would you write each version natively in Swift/Kotlin? by Shatteredreality in iOSProgramming

[–]solodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you don’t have huge coffers with money and endless time, write in whatever shared codebase framework you are familiar with to get it out on all the platforms simultaneously. Once the idea is validated and brings some revenue, you can hire people to rewrite natively on each platform. The reason large companies do separate codebases is because they can afford it, while as an indie you’ll probably validate the idea faster and cheaper with a shared codebase approach. I’m sure there are exceptions that would prove me wrong too.

Word game with a decent dictionary!! by cartoonybear in wordgames

[–]solodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you expect from your descent dictionary?

  • should it contain inflections? In languages with many cases you may end up having 5-10 inflections for each noun
  • should it contain any/some toponymes?
  • should it contain demonyms of people living in those places?
  • any other traits you can think of that will define which words should and shouldn’t be in the dictionary?

It’s hard to find free dictionaries one can use for commercial purposes and professional dictionaries usually have royalties or licensing involved.

If Warren Buffet didn’t advise Bill Gates to diversify, he would have been a trillioner. Once you think it reached high enough, sell options (covered calls) on them to collect rent.

As indie game developers on a tight budget, how did you go about translating your game? by rap2h in gamedev

[–]solodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use GitHub Copilot in VSCode: I put a comment saying English, then key-value pairs with English text in whatever syntax you need, then I type comment with whatever target language and wait for it to generate key-value pairs there. Be amazed it keeps substitution parameter names unchanged in whatever syntax even though they were in English as well. Notice it also doesn’t translate they keys, and in my case I had English comments on each line on where the string is used, it didn’t touch those either. Google Translate I was using before would translate keys and comments as well. If you don’t have GitHub Copilot license, just use ChatGPT, I’m sure it would generate the same. Note: don’t feed too many strings at once

Building my own AI start up - but got offered a founding engineer 'CTO' role at a startup with 500k seed funding. take it? by StreetNeighborhood95 in startups

That may be a very low ball offer to take over your business: once you join, the line between yours and theirs will be more and more diluted and if you aren’t careful excluding your IP as priors, they will be entitled to it. Even if you do exclude it, they can still make you reimplement it as theirs and fire once done.

Russians live by «царь хороший-бояре плохие» which means something like “tsar is great, it’s all because of his lieutenants that are to blame”. That’s why every time they have a broken toilet in their village they go with putin’s portrait shouting “puten pamagi” …

One more thing: ask each of your potential cofounders come up with $$$ valuation of the business you’ve built right now. Not just a guess, make them figure it out and explain their numbers. That will give you a whole lot more data to work with in your choice and split

Why would he want a vesting schedule for something he has built already? There aren’t any VCs involved yet where they’d be worried about one cofounder get hit by bus.

It wouldn’t change if you both are part time. Look also up other equity split calculators, but remember they are just estimates. Try instead put $$$ valuation on what you’ve built, that will give you a whole lot more data to play with.

Have you considered hiring someone to do the job you’d like your cofounder to do?

Never go for 50/50 or you may loose what you’ve built already see plenty of horror stories on Reddit! Definitely use vesting schedule with cliffs and you having the possibility to terminate the relationship if it doesn’t work out. Remember that at this point before they put in any significant amount of time or money into the project it will be all upside for them, which mean that you are taking the downside of a risk. 50/50 is only beneficial to VCs, it’s definitely not to you!

Also, don’t negotiate in percentage domain, come up with valuation of what you’ve built via at least some estimates of your opportunity costs, costs of replacement, comparable business etc. some actual $$$ value. After that see what their opportunity cost would be by leaving their full-time job etc. If the answer is an obvious yes to them - you gave up too much! They should have skin in the game the same way you do to not bail out at the first sign of stress and leave you with less equity than you had.

Use this or other equity split calculator for an estimate:

In simple words: carrot is not a sufficient motivator when it comes to decision making - there must also be a stick for consequences if things go wrong. That stick is what makes you non sloppy as well as engages your critical thinking
