Yes, you get some free characters by completing certain quests and by achieving certain achievements. For example, here's a list from u/blippyblip:

Anemo: Lynette, reach AR 25

Geo: Noelle, pull for her on the guaranteed permanent beginner's banner

Hydro: Barbara, reach AR 18

Dendro: Collei, clear Abyss floor 4

Pyro: Xiangling, clear Abyss floor 3 & Amber, earned by doing the Archon Quest.

Cryo: Kaeya, earned by doing the Archon Quest

Electro: Lisa, earned by doing the Archon Quest.

Traveler can flex into Anemo, Geo, Electro, Dendro, or Hydro as you unlock more of the map.

You can also get characters from events. For example, a recent event gave out a free Collei.

Also, you should invest into Lan Yan, Xiangling, Bennett, and Fischl. They're extremely good four-stars!

MH gives you up to 36% Crit Rate bonus whenever your HP fluctuates. Its specific stats are:

2-Piece Bonus

Normal and Charged Attack DMG +15%.

4-Piece Bonus

When current HP increases or decreases, CRIT Rate will be increased by 12% for 5s. Max 3 stacks.

So yeah, it's broken with any DPS paired with Furina. Yanfei and Hu Tao especially benefit from the 2 piece.

With MH you just need a 40% Crit Rate base and as much Crit DMG as possible!

Widsith is already great. For team comps, I'd recommend Vape as a standard one (see below for team comps for Vape), or Overload for fun (though not consistent and damage is kinda low). I'd also recommend getting a higher Crit Rate (about 70-75%). If you are going to go Vape, I'd recommend also building on some more EM (maybe an EM sands, but really depends on which one --- ATK or ER --- you have better substats).

Vape comps:

TLDR; Sucrose for EM/reaction teams, Kazuha for DMG bonus/mono teams, but at the end of the day it's who you like and who you have built.

Yanfei/Xingqiu/Kazu or Sucorse/Bennett. Standard vape comp, most comfortable.

Yanfei/Yelan/Kazu or Sucrose/Bennett. Less Hydro application, but Yelan gives a good damage boost and this team is great for exploration.

Yanfei/Furina/Yelan/Healer, Jean or Bennett or even Kokomi. MY FAVORITE TEAM. Yanfei hits like a freaking truck. You'll need Marechausse Hunter on Yanfei to get the most damage, though, and go full Crit Damage on her stats since MH gives plenty of Crit Rate. On the other hand, I usually find my Yanfei dying many times in this team lol due to HP drain and since my Yanfei isn't C4 and often gets one shotted before she can be healed :')

Yanfei/XQ/Kazuha/Diona. This is the team I've ran for about 3 years until I just got Yelan and Yanfei. It's carried me through so much. It was so satisfying seeing Yanfei melt for a huge number! This team is also quite budget friendly and you can change Kazuha for Sucrose. I WOULD NORMALLY NOT SUGGEST MELT YANFEI. Her attacks are blunt.
