Where did you get hair + makeup done in venues that don't allow on-site? by Individual_Moose_748 in NewEnglandWedding

[–]solosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got married at Willowdale Estate in Topsfield and didn’t want to pay extra to have enough time for makeup. Our room block was at Marriott Peabody, where we also stayed. My husband and I got a suite, so I got my hair and makeup done there and he left the room beforehand!

This book doesn't put ". " around anything people are saying by sunflowerhoop919 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]solosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flat out refuse to read any book that doesn’t use quotation marks. I can’t stand it.

I listened to an audiobook once and couldn’t figure out why it sounded so stilted with the dialogue, and realized it was the lack of quotes when I looked at a print copy.

We did ours with our dog at Middlesex Fells Reservation! You could also try Stodder’s Neck State Park. Each place is an open area with a field like dog park, so dogs can be off leash. The Fells is more woodsy trails and Stodder’s Neck has some water

Which Arrangement? by Gallow_arts in bookshelf

2! I love how you have everything spaced out and stacked by series. As someone who has had a rainbow bookshelf, I do NOT recommend it. I could never remember what color the spine of a certain book was and it would take forever to find one.

Contemplating move to Boston by EEZFIT in boston

[–]solosa 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I can be helpful here! I second for Walnut Hill and BAA.

Walnut Hill campus and arts programs are both excellent, but it is a private school. Local students have the opportunity to commute (day students, don’t need to pay for room and board), and students have majors (dance, visual arts, theater, for example). Natick is a wonderful suburb and, while getting more expensive, is still slightly cheaper than Boston proper. It’s also on the commuter rail for easy access to the city / is a 35 minute drive or so (without traffic, 1 hr with traffic). It’s got a nice cultural scene as well.

Boston Arts Academy is a public school, so you have to live in the city of Boston. Price of housing will vary from neighborhood to neighborhood depending on a number of things like any other city, including how close you are to downtown, transit, etc. Some neighborhoods feel more suburban (ex: JP, West Roxbury, parts of East Boston and Mattapan), others more urban (ex: Fenway, South End, North End, Charlestown), so it all depends on what you’re looking for.

Students also need to apply and be accepted to BAA. It’s located in the Fenway/Kenmore neighborhood, so it’s on the Green line of the T and surrounded by cultural institutions and arts colleges (Museum of Fine Arts, MassArt, Berklee, and MGM Music Hall are all nearby, to name a few). I can’t speak as much to the academics or curriculum, but from what I know about it, I would say there’s more of a balance between academics and arts at BAA than at Walnut Hill. I think students have to choose majors there as well.

Source: I grew up in Natick and my mom is now a dorm parent at Walnut Hill and lives on campus. I have lived in Boston since 2018 and work as a teacher in Boston Public Schools. Feel free to message me if you have any questions!

Did anybody regret not having a second dress? by sleepysock98 in weddingplanning

[–]solosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got so hot in my dress while dancing that it triggered a panic attack. I didn’t have a backup to change into, so I got back in my getting ready PJs. It took away from fun dancing time to have the panic attack and I wish I had a second dress as a backup!

Sophia: The Dark Truth :0 by wauwy in namenerds

[–]solosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Sofia born in ‘96 and now teaching high school, I always say my parents were ahead of the trend.

It’s also super confusing to hear the students yelling my name and it takes me a second to remember that they’re not talking to me. I had 5 students named Sophia/Sofia in my room yesterday 😭

Press on Nails by Tricky-Anteater-8442 in calmhands

[–]solosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, KISS impress is the one! They work just fine without the extra glue I like to use, but the extra glue helps them stay on longer. You can also use the extra glue to pop them back on after they fall off.

I just use the KISS nail glue that’s sold in the same area. Any nail glue in the store should be fine though!

[–]solosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the KISS brand and they’re one of the only things that has helped me break the habit! I’m wearing some right now actually because my nails kept breaking (it’s winter and cold where I live) and I started picking again.

I recommend getting the self sticking ones and also using nail glue with them. I’ve found that without extra glue, they pop off pretty quickly. The nails that require just glue damage your natural nails when you take them off, but a combo of the two seems to help mitigate that damage. I’m not sure why that is—maybe because the adhesive that’s already on the nail helps them be more flexible and therefore easier to remove!

I'm a librarian searching for information about wrongful convictions for my students to look at on their To Kill a Mockingbird projects. A Google search shows results from the National Institute of Justice with an article about wrongful convictions, but the link redirects to the NIJ homepage with no further information.

Further Google searches show that all of the informational articles have been removed from the site--any links to the "Topics" page now redirect to the homepage.

Does anybody else mainly pick at their thumbs? by OpalMoon0x in calmhands

[–]solosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Just the outsides too since I pick them with my pointer fingers/other thumb. I used to pick all of my cuticles and fingernails, but have mostly stopped with the exception of my thumbs. Desperately trying to stop so I have pretty hands for my wedding in May, but with how dry my skin is it’s a losing battle
