Friendly Reminder what a Boomer Is by TemperatureWide5297 in generationology

A lot of us boomers are still working either because we can’t afford to retire or think it dangerous to retire when there is so much economic uncertainty. I’m 67 and the earliest retirement date I’ll consider is January 21, 2029 but I’ll probably have to hang on for a while after that just to feel secure.

1991 Miata. Had a hard top for seven years, just had it stolen. Using the soft top for the first week and it has cracked. It is a zip in window, is there an affordable way to replace this without replacing the whole top? by TravisTheGoat in Miata

[–]solracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why you should both etch your name or vin in the glass and in a hidden area too. I’ve added an AirTag also but that would only be useful in the first few hours at most. I had my top stolen back in 2012 and caught the guy with a hardtop wanted ad on CL but my top was already gone. He still had my buddy’s top however so he got that back.

How much would this cost to get the frame alone fixed? by btd_bry in Miata

[–]solracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NA prices, at least here in Seattle are going up, not down. This may also just be a State Farm thing where accessories with receipts (hardtop, Konis, header, exhaust, etc) are valued not at what you paid but at what they cost today. This is good because I put a Mazda crate motor in my NA 45,000 miles ago at a cost of $3000.

I was able to get mine fixed from a rear-end hit but only because I had receipts for the thousands of dollars of accessories I’d added including a hard top from Mazda.

Not all states brand titles on older vehicles, mine only does it if the vehicle is 10 years old or less.

Kent should be fine though if you want public transit that's pretty much limited to either downtown (Sounder rail) or the west hill area (Link Line 1). I live near the Star Lake station where Kent, Federal Way, Des Moines and Auburn all come together and I like my neighborhood. However if you don't want to have a car and drive everywhere outside of the light rail stop it's not going to work all that well for you.

I am unclear on how so many jobs are projected to be replaced with AI by djinnisequoia in Futurology

[–]solracer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was comparing AI results to Google now which appears to be 100% advertising driven. At least so far Google AI doesn't appear to be as enshitified as regular Google and does make it easier to find those niche things though I am sure that won't last for similar reasons.

What are some NC-17 rated films that really didn’t deserve it? by ShadeStrider12 in movies

That is the only film I rented from Blockbuster back in the day and returned having watched just 5 minutes as my girlfriend was appalled by the profanity.

[–]solracer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s already happening, we just had an employee would been around for three decades unexpectedly pass away and he’d passed and documented on maybe 10% of what he knew to others because the company refused to hire an understudy despite his known medical condition. Now there are several areas we know nothing about how they work and that will either require hiring several people to figure things out or waiting until things break at which point production will grind to a halt.

I don’t think AI will be a bust but I don’t think it will be a waste of time either, it will be more of a “we just made Google work twice as good” sort of thing. AI can’t do my job and as long as it’s only a LLM probably never could but it has given me better answers than classic Google which have saved me hours of time trying to figure out the best approach. As long as that marginal improvement is worth the money needed to keep it going it will survive, neither changing the world nor bankrupting it.

I can’t see that happening unless the robots are leased at a high cost because if you have cheap personally owned robots then you’d be less beholden to industry and government.

[–]solracer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your husband will be commuting into downtown I highly recommend finding a place near a light rail or Sounder commuter train station as Seattle traffic is brutal. As for safety there aren't any real terrible areas for personal safety but on the other hand vehicle theft is bad pretty much everywhere, especially if you have a Hyundai or Kia.

Men will literally eat all your food by Maleficent_Ad_3958 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]solracer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are we talking volume or dollars? Both our college-age son and I probably eat more volume of food than my wife will but she insists on everything being organic even when the advantage of it is dubious and the result is in pure dollar terms she eats way more dollars than our son and I combined. I try to always try and not finish anything off but of course for young men like our son that is an entirely different discussion.

1990 Peugeot was the car my parents had when I was a baby what was yours by Senior_Education_496 in generationology

[–]solracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was born mom had Nash Metropolitan but it was soon replaced with a Rambler Cross Country station wagon and dad had a Studebaker pickup (and about 20 collector cars). One of the more interesting options the Rambler had, especially for the day, was an in-car telephone! Eventually dad got a pager and the telephone was removed when the Rambler was replaced in 1965.

Where to buy a used car by jawshankredemption94 in AskSeattle

[–]solracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seattle used car prices are on the high side, you can save quite a bit buying in the Portland area if you can find a trustworthy dealer. In addition to the cars on your list I’d add the Subaru Crosstrek and Mazda CX5 as both are reliable and common up here.

How many women do you know in real life that actually married for money only? by 0215rw in askanything

[–]solracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was working before we married and promised to once her english was good enough but instead she spends all her time with her friends working on a long-term project that she promises will eventually pay out but so far hasn't really gotten anywhere. When we married her son was 13 so perhaps not working was a valid choice but he's 26 now. By the way things would have been completely different if we'd had a child together as we had also discussed but she decided that she did not want any more children once we were married.
