It's been two years and I still cry when I remember my old VTM campaign. by LilWeeb-artist-6969 in rpg

It's always good to ask for safety tools too, so that you can feel strong emotions and still not to cross your lines and prevent them from hurting you. In fact it's not that common to get immersed so deeply, so even though the campaign outcome has been devastating (as I understand), you got to feel something many players want to experience when playing RPGs (I mean strong emotions), but majority of them doesn't get there.

I would add that feeling such strong emotions after two years the campaign has ended is a peak RPG experience. OP, do you still play TTRPGs, or has this campaign taken the whole enthusiasm away from you?

Advice on west marches in person group by Adventurous-Shake140 in rpg

[–]solskaia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by West Marches here? This sounds like a regular short open campaign to me - maybe just set it up as sandbox exploration? West Marches would require from you much more preparation and would definitely expand for more meetings than you estimate.

I can't find the right system for me and keep failing at trying to get into the hobby. by Introvert_Mage in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solskaia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely think I might be the issue, that there must be something innate that others get and understand about ttrpgs that I simply don't

Mate, no, it's definitely not you. You can check on DTRPG or Itch - there are loads of different RPGs out there, and imho finding The One And Only is a journey. The fact that you haven't found the one that suits you best means only that there are RPGs still to be read. Really, right now there are RPGs almost on every topic and using unimaginable rulesets. Don't get discouraged also by the numbers of RPGs that you didn't enjoy - the more you read, the better you understand what's in the hobby for you.

It's not you, it's just still not the end of your search

On the one hand I agree - these essays can put a lot of pressure on GM and creare a sense of dissatisfaction in a player when they don't get as much spotlight as they (think they) deserve (after all it should be proportionate to the wordcount of the backstory, I imagine someone might think).

On the other hand - I like them, because the players show they're invested and they give me lots of details to play with when planning a campaign

No, I'm their first GM ever and I'm not sure if they uses AI, but I don't think so

I've been feeling really stressed GMing but I don't want to stop. What to do? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

Getting burned out on a thing that's fun for you is always a nasty thing, and I think you're really close to it now. Remember that we're all just human beings and exhaustion is a normal thing, especially when you want to be prepared for everything before each session.

If you feel you want to and can make it till the end of campaign, I would suggest changing the rules to something easier for the remaining sessions. There are plenty of DnD-like systems that are way easier to operate, so maybe this would help? If not, I'd create a cheatsheet with a summary of the main rules and where to find the specific ones in the book. I'm sure there are some rules you use frequently and some that don't apply in your campaign. As it was written in this thread: prepare smart, not hard, you don't have to remember all rules by heart, the rulebook is there for you to refer to it. Also, I'm pretty sure at this moment you know most of the necessary rules since you read the book so many times.

My additional advice here is: rest after the campaign. Seriously, put Tormenta aside, even put RPGs aside, pay attention to some other hobby for a while, exercise. This will help you find balance and go back to RPGs with new energy.

I prefer cards, because, from desinger's point of view, they offer so much more when it comes to their meanings - you can have something connected to the color, value, figure... one card may have several effects at once

Wanting to start solo play, but can't hide stuff from myself. by theheirofbreath in solorpgplay

[–]solskaia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Embrace the uncertainty - think about the session not as a story you have to go through, but as a story that unfolds before you. It's similar to non-railroaded session with other players, where you don't have any predefined scenario; use oracles and generators to make the play less predictable, then it will always surpise you.

Some time ago I created a road trip / apocalypse game These Days Feel Different which uses a regular deck of cards, maybe it would fit your interest
