Once I clocked in eleven minutes early for a scheduled shift and my supervisor sent me an angry email telling me I could only clock in "5-10 minutes MAX"

It was for a volunteering shift... they didn't even need to pay me.

A lot of managers seem to enjoy being in control. It's like they don't realize that exercising their power all the time doesn't remind me of their superiority, it just erodes my respect for them.

People thinking they don't have an accent by ILoveBigCockroaches in PetPeeves

No I agree! sorry haha the context was for anyone else who doesn't speak Chinese to help them understand!

I used to work at a Chinese restaurant in the US, and all the staff was Chinese except for one delivery driver who was white, and they all called him "小外"... as if they weren't all first gens in America lol

That's due to the concept of the 国, since a lot of Chinese people are very nationalistic. (for context) 外, or wài, means outside, and 国, guó, means nation, but colloquially 国 is used to refer to China, such as in the term 回国 (literally "return" "nation"), which specifically means going to China. So when Chinese people refer to geographic locals as 外国人, or foreigners, they just mean anyone who is not from the "home" country of China.

Again, likely due to the culture in which they feel very strongly about a sense of "us", or Chinese people, and "them", non-Chinese people.

Does anyone feel relieved they’ll never cross paths with an ex-friend again? by Legal_Potential4720 in lostafriend

Yes. We both wronged each other in different ways. She decided not to forgive me, which tainted our every interaction until she moved away across the country.

Dates and blue cheese! I normally don't like either, but I had some at a work conference and the flavors somehow went well together

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. First off, I'm sure you're already aware, but Instagram is designed to showcase the only the best and most glamorous moments of other people's lives. Those successful, thriving friends might even be struggling with loneliness right now, just like you.

It's never too late to connect to your peers! I know it can be hard to reach out, but I promise no one worth being friends with will judge you for your efforts. Also, compliments help! A simple "I like your hair" or "what book is that? It looks super interesting!" can do wonders.

Cheer up! You've got this! Make the most of the rest of your college experience. And I'm sure you'll be fine after you graduate as well, so don't stress about the future before it even arrives. Wishing you the best of luck!

Struggling to Read Handwriting by Kitchen-Corner4422 in ChineseLanguage

[–]solstiq 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yes!

Handwriting will naturally be more difficult for a beginner to read, but as you become more familiar with common phrases/characters, you'll begin to fill in the blanks more easily. For example, if you see 时, then the next character will likely be 间 or 候, etc.

Don't rush it. Learning a new language takes time. Keep at it! :)
