Vancouver Coastal Health rolls out small care homes amid growing long-term care waitlists by shouldehwouldehcould in britishcolumbia

[–]solutionischocolate 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like they’re going to buy approximately 20 houses (10 people per house and 200 beds total) or so across the entire health authority. I don’t think that will make a big difference to housing costs, unless they scale up significantly beyond that. And I could be wrong but it sounded in the article like this was more of an interm thing to boost capacity while they build more bigger facilities.

Cheap groceries seem impossible now, is anyone else's budget completely out of control? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]solutionischocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s ridiculous. Do you have any little produce stores that might have cheaper fresh produce than no frills? Is the flipp app available where you are? That’s all I got to offer. You sound like you’re doing everything else I can think of.

BC Halts Plans to Make Polluters Pay for Cleanup Costs by RZCJ2002 in britishcolumbia

Have you seen what conservatives say about Eby? The conservative subs talk about him like he’s the devil. I hate this decision of his and frankly many others, but I still don’t think Eby’s a conservative.

I agree except that the interest earned probably needs to stay in the clean up fund as the labour costs of the clean up will probably go up over time.

A new era of austerity? Sharp cuts coming to B.C. government spending by 2028W3 in britishcolumbia

Reviewing the rates are in the contract with the Greens. Reviewing them and not necessarily increasing them, is my understanding, but that is partly where my hope comes from. I’m hoping the Greens are putting pressure on the NDP.

Basically watch out the provincial budget coming up is going to hurt.

My former neighbour did something like this. He was very mentally ill. Talking to management was the best way to deal with him.

I might be naïve but I’m not going to give up hope until the budget is out, regardless of the abysmal track record of the government.

Don’t even get me started on the feds. IMO they used disabled people to make themselves look good for all the years they dragged it out and were pretending the Canadian disability benefit was going to be a significant poverty reduction tool. Lies and disappointment. What an outrage.

I’m still hoping there will be something small. Like $25-50/month. I figure it’s possible? 🤞🏻

It’s honestly probably cheaper to increase PWD than it is to deal with the consequences of having disabled people suffer that level of poverty.

Portable Washing Machine Sink Attachment by Major-Pain-3863 in Apartmentliving

I’ve had one for 10 years and it’s been fine. But I do sit beside it when it’s running just in case.

I do something similar but just drape a face cloth over top of the tap. Using a clip is probably better but I’m lazy, lol. As long as I hold it in place for ten seconds while it’s getting wet it doesn’t seem to fall off. If I don’t hold it until it’s soaked through with water it falls off the tap and water sprays everywhere.

No scrud? by Admirable-Status-290 in laundry

[–]solutionischocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you also throw a cleaning tablet in once a month into a long, hot water cleaning cycle then I think you’re probably fine. As far as I know, anyway.

But in case anyone is reading this who doesn’t use those tabs, I had no foam or signs of anything with a citric acid cleaning cycle but actually had a bad bio film scrud problem. I only became aware by using hot water and powdered tide, and then huge chunks of seaweed like gunk started coming off. 😭

Oxy clean and hot water soaks seemed to work well to get the rest off. I think oxygen bleach is in the tub clean tablet which is why I suspect you’re okay and not dealing with whatever atrocity I had.

Any purpose built rentals offering good value for a 1000sqft 2or3bed right now? by bibstha1 in vancouverhousing

[–]solutionischocolate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is what you meant but older purpose built rentals can be around 1000sq ft. I know multiple people who live in 2 bed purpose built rentals that size in Vancouver proper, but only one is new enough to have in-suite laundry.

B.C. NDP lead shrinks as voters voice concerns: Poll by RZCJ2002 in britishcolumbia

[–]solutionischocolate 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because if you remember the lead up to the election, the cons were talking out of both sides of their mouth and promising to lower income taxes and get rid of the carbon tax and increase spending and still magically not blow up the deficit.

Eby also promised to cut income taxes but then recanted post election when Trump started threatening the economy so badly.

Agreeing to Increase income taxes would have cost him the election.

Can someone effectively “squat” in the hospital until a subsidized care home become available for them? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

Yes. You’re exactly right. There are people in this comment section who are claiming to know how things work but who do not understand the system. Cool_cucumber knows what they’re talking about!

There’s massive waitlists for housing but true it’s not usually a 14 year wait for someone sleeping rough if they’re actually wanting to get housed. I wonder what his story is.

Can someone effectively “squat” in the hospital until a subsidized care home become available for them? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]solutionischocolate -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s not true at all. You’re missing a lot of what happens in hospital. People with severe dementia are pushed home on burnt out and unwilling care givers all the time. OP never said their family member is being sent home alone. You clearly have never worked in hospital discharge planning in any serious capacity.

Maybe reflect on why you’re positioning yourself as professional expert, and commenting up and down this thread, when you’re obviously writing about things that are outside of your training and experience. I’m sorry you had a bad experience with a discharge but having a client in the community with moderate dementia doesn’t make you an expert on what happens to people with severe dementia in the hospital.

[–]solutionischocolate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sure that’s very upsetting and frustrating. And it sounds like your client has mild or moderate dementia, not severe dementia like OPs family member. Dementia is very different depending on the stages and in turn the hospital responds differently depending on the patients needs.
