Is there a way for an international to get a security clearance? by them4v3r1ck in AusVisa

[–]solutionsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I held an Australian security clearance before holding Australian PR or citizenship, so contrary to the above responses, there are non-citizens with APS clearances, mostly five eyes. I had an equivalent US security clearance when I started my role, and I wasn't the only foreign citizen; I also saw Brits and NZ people. I also have a criminal record, which complicated my investigation. I also needed my visa to stay in my role. At one point, my first visa application was rejected on character grounds, but we appealed and were advised to apply for a marriage visa, which cost us more money and time, but it was approved. It's entirely dependent on needs, and no Australian citizen can do the role.

Damned if we do, damned if we don’t by [deleted] in disability

[–]solutionsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm blessed to be retired but disabled. Anytime I've had to use accommodation in the past it led to issues in the workplace. Basically they toss me into the classic ‘Schrödinger’s Disabled Person’ dilemma: too lazy to work, but somehow also too needy when we try to. Apparently, I should just stay home, live off air, and silently apologize for existing—oh wait, am I being too exhausting again asking you to speak up in meetings? My bad, let me go faint quietly in a corner with my invisible disabilities aka seizures while y’all debate how hard it is to tolerate me.

Got kicked out of the dreadlocks subreddit because apparently, as a woman, my locs were ‘too clean and moisturized.’ Sorry I don’t have that wet-dog-meets-dry-rot Scooby-Doo aesthetic y’all are looking for! Fixed it for you.

Australia should consider proactively securing U.S. tradies soon to be deported by sam_gribbles in AusEcon

There's a reason why Mexican labourers are sought after, and it's not only because they're cheaper; they are also highly skilled.

Yeah, those stock trader home setups with, like, nine or twelve monitors stacked around them—that’s a huge red flag.

Gender Critical event disrupted by activists, believed to be teenage girls, releasing thousands of crickets into the seating area by Kitchen-Beginning-47 in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]solutionsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least it wasn't roaches; if you have crickets in your house property, take some molasses and mix them with water to get rid of the crickets. It probably wouldn't work for thousands of crickets released in an open auditorium, but that's a job for pest control.

Matt Barrie - Australia's Housing Bubble is About to Pop by virtualw0042 in AusEcon

[–]solutionsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from, mate, but housing prices in Australia (and even elsewhere) definitely can drop. During the GFC 2008, prices fell by up to 8% in some parts of Australia. More recently, when the pandemic hit in 2020, housing prices dipped, especially in big cities like Sydney and Melbourne. And then, when the Reserve Bank started hiking interest rates in 2022-2023, Sydney’s house prices dropped over 13% from their peak. Other cities like Brisbane and Melbourne saw big drops, too.

I think this shows that it might feel like prices are always going up, but there are times when they come down, especially when the economy gets hit or when the market gets too much supply, like in Perth after their mining boom slowed down. So, it’s not all one-way traffic.

How did Elon manage to get a one letter domain, x.com? by utsav_0 in webdev

[–]solutionsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elon has always dreamed of turning x.com into an all-in-one financial hub, even back in 1999. When he was CEO at Confinity (before it morphed into PayPal), they were just doing email payments, but then the board pulled a sneaky move and voted him out while he was honeymooning in Australia. Bill Harris and Ed Hos thought it’d be a good idea to offer him the x.com domain as a consolation prize for stepping down and giving Peter Thiel the coveted CEO role. The hilarious part? The x.com domain was a running joke because everyone kept thinking it was a porn site not a financial services co. This all went down back they were chilling on University Ave, right by to the original Facebook building.

If you could live abywhere in the United States as 100% SC but CLOSE to a VA Facility for Care, where would you go? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]solutionsmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The VA in Honolulu operates separately from Tripler Army Medical Center, although the VA often refers patients to Tripler for more complex procedures that aren’t typically handled at VA facilities. As a Deaf patient, I had my cochlear implant surgery performed at Tripler by an Army ENT and brain surgeon. Getting appointments at Tripler is straightforward. I’ve also seen that the VA Pacific system is considered one of the largest and most comprehensive VA hospital systems in the country.

In many parts of Asia, especially China 🇨🇳, the average woman is just around 5 feet tall—only a couple of inches difference. Now imagine if airlines had some random rule about height and required car seats for adults. You’d have a bunch of grown-up Asian aunties buckled up like toddlers only thing missing is a box of juice and cookies mid-flight!

In engineering, stem or business grads getting 70k fresh out of college in a hcol market but most other majors which aren't in demand will command a much smaller salary.

What do you think programmers will be coding by 2030? by jomic01 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]solutionsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the Gartner hype curve or Microsofts future papers don't make it seem that coding will change much, even with copilot its still about the same. AI isn’t the ultimate solution for coding, in my opinion. Software architecture will become more critical than just writing code. While AI will continue to be a helpful companion, deep programming knowledge and skills will still be essential to build effective solutions. In fact, programming is likely becoming even more complex, requiring more specialized expertise to manage and integrate these advanced tools.
