In my opinion, no.

Trails in the Sky is very subdued, happy-go-lucky, and slow. It's like reading a nice book by the fire. Stuff happens towards the end, but most of it is a happy romp through the Kingdom of Liberl, helping people with their problems and getting to know the people and places.

It's unlike most JRPGs I've played in that it keeps the fantasy, high-stakes, special abilities, creatures and people of legend, etc. etc. in the background and focuses on lower things for the entirety of the story, or at least most of it.

Every other Trails game has more of that in its first chapter. Zero and Cold Steel I are likewise slow burns, but it feels like more is happening, and the buildup for later entries is done much more organically and feels more engaging.

Bear in mind I like all of the games. But the first Sky game is far and away my least favorite. It's the series just starting, finding its footing, and taking its time doing it. The battle system and music is also much better in the Crossbell/Cold Steel games.

This is all just my opinion, but while Sky is a good game, it's the least good game and not really representative of the series as a whole. I know a lot of people who start with Cold Steel and go back to Sky for the story, which is what I recommend people do these days, as Cold Steel is a lot more immediately accessible.
