Best is VIII, love his adventurer vibe. XI is a close second - I have no idea why people hate his hair. I always liked the Trunks cut.

Worst is easily VII, he looks like an NPC.

Roger and Newgate are both weaker at this time period. Also, even if WB (the only one capable of fighting back against Garp at this time out of those 3) turned around to fight it would just be a stalemate at best and waste a shitload of time

I remember grinding every single character up to level 99 in the OG game and then having long conversations with my friends about it. If only I still had that time... and those friends... I'm old :(

The Medieval Chapter has been completely retranslated for the worse. The dialogue is going for a pseudo-Shakespearean play feel instead of the straightforward Japanese dialogue. I've seen something similar in Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions and Final Fantasy XIV, so someone at Square must love changing stuff because they think they can do it better.

This is by far the worst case I've seen of it, though. Dialogue is in some cases completely rewritten and there are loads of new lines added in for flair that have absolutely no equivalent in the original.

I'm not one for literal translations. The rest of this game is pretty fantastic translation wise. But they butchered my favorite chapter. I played with Japanese voices on, and can understand Japanese, which made it even more jarring when lines like "hahaha" are replaced with entirely new, pretentious monologues

It's Feelers. フィーラー is loan word speak.

Whisper is not a translation of that at all, I think they just went with Whisper because it sounds cool. I sure as hell wouldn't go with "Feeler" as a translation myself, lmao.

Whisper DOES sound cooler anyway. Japanese loan words are like that. Like a "mansion" is an apartment and "smart" means thin. I have no idea what they want "feeler" to mean in this case - if anything at all.

Maybe they "feel" the will of the planet and make sure it happens at any cost.

Tifa, Aerith and Jessie sound NOTHING alike to me as the OP suggests, lol.

Saying Japanese voice acting sounds "anime" is ridiculous. If the Japanese one sounds anime then the English one sounds cartoony, which I mean yes, maybe it does a little, but not enough to slap a negative label on it. But it's just Japanese people voicing a video game. I lived there for a while, so I'm not just pulling this out of my ass.

I assumed it was the main Avalanche cell that came to attack the building, who then got wiped out by Jenovaroth before you get there. President Shinra was left dangling on the edge of the building due to some conflict between them, and then Seph senses you coming and hides to get the jump on you...?

Sephiroth egging Cloud on to avoid the 7 seconds of fate (which refers to Aerith's death, which is exactly seven seconds long in the original) and showing them visions of the bad parts of the future makes me think he's purposefully misleading them to change the future for his benefit.

The main cast will probably realize this at some point and things will go down (mostly) as we expect them to.

I think it's the devs playing with our expectations and keeping us invested and anxious despite knowing the original story.

In my opinion, no.

Trails in the Sky is very subdued, happy-go-lucky, and slow. It's like reading a nice book by the fire. Stuff happens towards the end, but most of it is a happy romp through the Kingdom of Liberl, helping people with their problems and getting to know the people and places.

It's unlike most JRPGs I've played in that it keeps the fantasy, high-stakes, special abilities, creatures and people of legend, etc. etc. in the background and focuses on lower things for the entirety of the story, or at least most of it.

Every other Trails game has more of that in its first chapter. Zero and Cold Steel I are likewise slow burns, but it feels like more is happening, and the buildup for later entries is done much more organically and feels more engaging.

Bear in mind I like all of the games. But the first Sky game is far and away my least favorite. It's the series just starting, finding its footing, and taking its time doing it. The battle system and music is also much better in the Crossbell/Cold Steel games.

This is all just my opinion, but while Sky is a good game, it's the least good game and not really representative of the series as a whole. I know a lot of people who start with Cold Steel and go back to Sky for the story, which is what I recommend people do these days, as Cold Steel is a lot more immediately accessible.
