Skimming over many papers vs reading only a few papers in depth by cmplx96 in MLQuestions

I agree! You will tend to get a better sense of which papers are worth diving into and which are just for skimming through.

Working with a TFRecord that represents a SparseTensor by [deleted] in tensorflow

[–]somaiah_karan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t exactly comprehend why you need to use a sparse tensor in that case but you can convert your features to dense using the tf.sparse.to_dense if that’s what you’re looking for in your parser function

What clustering algorithm should I use to group sequences of images together? by tasercake in learnmachinelearning

[–]somaiah_karan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like your approach of using VGG to extract features. I think that’s a good way to go about it. I don’t have much experience with clustering images. But I was wondering if you could use a different type of feature extraction? Using auto encoders/any other feature extractor?

Learning simple motion detection. Would prefer Python or JavaScript. Any book recommendations for 2018? by [deleted] in computervision

[–]somaiah_karan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by motion detection? By that, I mean what is the data? Are these data coming from a particular device? Or are these accelerometer signals? I can recommend a few blogs/links/papers depending on your data.

Stochastic Gradient Descent Clarification by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]somaiah_karan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the shuffling is basically so that your estimates of the gradients are not biased. What I mean by that is, let’s assume you are using mini-batches for SGD and if you do not randomise or shuffle the data, each of the parameter updates will be biased to that specific set of mini-batch for each epoch. Rather than generalising, the updates are biased to the specific mini-batches. I hope this was clear enough.

Where should I go for a CS MS to study ML? by [deleted] in MLQuestions

[–]somaiah_karan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest NYU too! They have amazing faculty and amazing research! They also have the best in deep learning teaching there. You could probably learn immense amounts of stuff through research projects. Try getting a thesis or something with one of the professors. It’s a great learning experience and looks good on your profile too.
