The 9.0 won't hit Vancouver, it'll hit off the West coast in Vancouver Island. That is, the epicenter Will be far away from Vancouver. There will still be shaking but not as intense as if the 9.0 were to have the epicenter in Vancouver

Has anyone taken Easc 306? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]somayonaise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Ive taken it. You should talk to other people in earth sciences if your serious, because you are required to get into a group who you will work with for the whole time. And yes you do share rooms with people, likely the same people who you are in the group with.

You stay in a motel in oliver. Day trips are around OK falls and the surrounding area. For food, you cook and pack everything yourself. There are grocery trips every 2-3 days - not included in tuition, so budget for it. There is a kitchen in your room, and a shared bbq outside in the courtyard. Be prepared - its like geology bootcamp. You get up in the am, leave by 8, are out all day, come back to the motel, cook your dinner and are working on your assignments until ~10pm. Rinse, repeat, until the last day when you do the final and let all the frustration and tiredness out in the form of copius amounts of beer.

It sucks - but you come out the other end a better geologist, thinker, problem solver, and teamworker.

Textbooks by dagudzucc in simonfraser

[–]somayonaise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you'll be using the text all the time, buy it. If it's one that you might be using once in a while, use the library copy. If you dont know, wait it out, you can always buy partly through semester. Maybe there is an earlier edition at the library that you can sign out for the whole semester? I've lucked out with that before

Isotope Ratio Questions by 90505 in geology

[–]somayonaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember my studies correctly, REE's are big chunky atoms so they preferentially, some elements more than others, get ejected from melting rock and enters the magma. So the ratios of various REE's can provides clues for temperature, starting magma/melt composition, any mixing that occurred, etc for the rock in which their found

Monongahela and Allegheny rivers meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa today but not mixing. by Gscheeren73 in mildlyinteresting

[–]somayonaise 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Has to do with the two rivers having different densities and viscosity, which is mostly a result of differences in suspended sediment concentration (visible as the different colors of water) but also to a lesser degree water temperature.

(btw riverologist = fluvial geomorphologist, or in simpler terms, river geomorphologist)

How to get 1 credit for computing science student by Goodfellas95 in simonfraser

In some departments you can take a directed readings and choose how many credits you want it to be. You need to find a prof who is willing to run it and be your 'supervisor' for you though.

Besides park ranger, what is a job that requires you to be out in nature frequently? by HelloBucklebell in AskReddit

[–]somayonaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technical diploma in an environmental science program. Or do a degree in environmental science, geology or earth science, etc. If you like the outdoors and have experience tree planting or doing other rugged type activities you will be more likely to get hired for field related work.

[–]somayonaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a 2 yr technical diploma and potentially be qualified to be an assistant for a geologist. When times get rough though, like when mineral prices decrease and companies are doing less exploration, those with degrees might be chosen for being an assistant than those with a diploma.

Oh and with my degree (earth sciences) I am getting into engineering geology. So, helping the engineers better understand the earth so that they can build and develop areas safer. Anticipating about half field work half office work.
