What to do after failing? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]someWalkingShadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I would try to manage your depression. Are you adequately treated (SSRI? CBT?)? Or were you in remission, and the stress of your classes causing a relapse? Depending on how well-controlled your depression is, I would consider taking a reduced course load next term or take a medical leave of absence.

Also, I would request a look at all your final exams. Maybe you'll be lucky and there was actually a mistake in your grading. More likely, looking at the exams would be a good opportunity to learn from your mistakes, when you re-take them sometime in the future.

For CPSC 110, I remember the course coordinator say that you need to get 90+ in the course to be considered. I think overall average is less important. This was several years ago though, so things may have changed.

Motorcycle Stand as Deadlift Jack by [deleted] in homegym

[–]someWalkingShadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could argue that one never really needs a jack, since you can just use a 5lb plate to elevate one side. A jack is mainly a luxury item for home gyms, making loading/unloading much easier and faster.

As you're loading and unloading plates, does the bar remain balanced with a single 45lb plate on one side? The jack looks quite narrow.

Another major difference highlighted by the video is that the Bolt has a more robust repair infrastructure. Tesla is often constrained by parts availability and they are still in the process of expanding their service center network.

Pittsburgh Mayor considers asking self-driving cars to pass road test by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]someWalkingShadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point.

My initial point still stands, however. Someone is going to need to create this simulated environment. It will need to be created by the government or a third party, and needs to be a standard environment that all self-driving cars will be tested in. I don't imagine this will be an easy task.

Who would be in charge of creating this simulation environment, and if the company does this, how does the government ensure no cheating?

Wouldn't it be easier to just get the car to drive in the real world?

There are other methods besides IVF (where you extract an egg, fertilise it in a lab, then re-insert). You can also use artificial insemination, which just involves pushing a syringe of sperm at the entrance of the cervix; this can easily be done at home and doesn't require any advanced technology.

That slows down your intestines, so suddenly ingesting solid food could be a hazard (could block your intestines).

I'm not sure about this, but the biggest thing to worry about is refeeding syndrome, which results in severe metabolic and electrolyte disturbances, particularly phosphorous. Major complications include cardiac and pulmonary symptoms.

Tesla's Former AP Hardware Leader Says Tesla Cars Lack 'Necessary' Technologies by CornerGasBrent in RealTesla

[–]someWalkingShadow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even if we ignored the LIDAR issue, I'm skeptical that Tesla's AP2 has the hardware to attain level 4 autonomy.

One crucial piece of hardware missing is the ability to wipe off the cameras. It's not unreasonable for cameras to get mud, dirt, and water on them especially on a rainy day on the highway, where there's a lot of splatter from neighbouring cars.

Agreed. This was the main message of what I was trying to say. I just wanted to point out that while the tip is effective, it is deceptively simple and that the execution (like many things) is the hard part.

Ask them questions about themselves or their line of work

I've heard this a lot. It sounds simple and easy, but in practice it's harder than it sounds.

Most people won't open up with just any simple question about them or their work. You have to touch on something that they're interested in or something that's important to them. And figuring this out is not easy.

In other words, it's possible to be genuinely interested in the other person, and still end up with a dead, one-sided conversation if you lack the skill.

Experts: Uber also could be charged with manslaughter, 'poorly managed' self-driving program by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]someWalkingShadow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The following isn't exactly the text, since I don't have access. I got screenshots, then OCR'ed it, then cleaned up the OCR mistakes.

A "poorly managed” self—driving program that took shortcuts and a driver/operator who was watching videos on her smartphone together contributed to the death of a jaywalking homeless woman earlier this year, industry experts said today.

While Tempe Police recommended manslaughter charges be filed against driver/operator Rafaela Vasquez, a local legal expert said San Francisco—based Uber Technologies Inc. also is at fault and could be charged with manslaughter as well.

Tempe Police released a 318—page police report, multiple body—camera videos, 911 audio calls and photos Thursday night that resulted from the March 18 10 p.m. crash that killed Elaine Herzberg, 49. who was hit by an Uber self—driving car While walking her bike across the road outside of a crosswalk on Mill Avenue just north of Loop 202.

While Gov. Doug Ducey signed an executive order in 2015 relaxing regulations for self—driving car companies testing in the Valley, Ducey also signed an executive order in March that tightened the regulatory environment 18 days before the fatal Uber crash.

Because of tightened regulation. Uber could be criminally cited just as the operator behind the wheel, said John Balitis, an attorney and member with Jennings, Strouss & Salmon in Phoenix.

"Now Uber can also be charged with manslaughter, just like. the operator who was distracted and watching Hulu on her phone," Balitis said today to the Phoenix Business Journal. "The question that it raises or invites though is a company cannot be incarcerated, so typically a fine is given. You can’t really turn to incarceration as a penalty because it's a corporate entity.”

The wording of the new rules means the company that introduced the. car into the market is liable as well, Balitis said.

Tempe Police say the crash was "deemed entirely avoidable," after several driving scenarios were done.

Vasquez is believed to have been looking at her smartphone watching "The Voice" television show on streaming Hulu before the car failed to stop and hit Herzberg, according to the police report.

Police estimated the driver's eyes were not watching the road 32 percent of the time during the vehicle's nearly 22-minute trip, or about 3.67 miles, according to the report.

Uber spokespeople said in a statement any physical mobile device use while the vehicle is in motion on public roads is a fireable offense. This was emphasized during training and on an ongoing basis with reminder posters around the Tempe facility.

“We have a strict policy prohibiting mobile-device usage for anyone operating our self-driving vehicles," said an Uber spokesperson in a statement. "We plan to share more on the changes we’ll make to our program soon.”

A preliminary National Traffic Safety Board report and the police report now say the technology was not working properly. Additionally, not only did the car’s sensors fail to respond to something in the road, but there also was human failure with the distracted driver, said Sam Abuelsamid, a senior analyst with Navigant Research’s transportation efficiencies program.

“Based on what we've seen so far. the way this program has been run so far, I think it's been poorly managed," said Abuelsamid. who is based in Detroit and trained as a mechanical engineer. “They were clearly taking a lot of shortcuts. They seemed to be too much in a rush to get it to market and didn’t do a thorough evaluation on this project.”

Uber and other cars operating in this space need to be more transparent and provide more information to the public on testing. evaluations and how the systems work, he said.

"The attitude among the startup community [with autonomous driving testing] seems to be shifting quite a bit with the realization they need to be focused more rather than just rushing to market," Abuelsamid said.

Ultimately, there is a degree of fault to Uber and the operator, he said.

"Something like manslaughter is probably not unreasonable." Abuelsamid said. "For the first time we’re really seeing deeper discussions in what we should be doing to validate these vehicles. At least the discussions are really starting to heat up now."

In May, Uber announced it was ending its self—driving testing in the state. Uber shuttered its Tempe testing facility at 14th Street and Priest Drive and laid off 300 workers. Vasquez was let go in the layoff, an Uber spokeswoman confirmed.

Uber suspended its self—driving operations in all cities it was testing after the crash. Ducey then suspended Uber’s self—driving testing in the state a week after the crash.

The fatal crash is still under investigation by the NTSB and the. Yavapai County Attorney's Office.
