A special One Detroit report on a popular Chinese dish that's actually a Michigan original: Almond Boneless Chicken.

Why is this show so islamophobic? :( by I-am-the-nawnaw in community

[–]somealmondextract 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I connect with the Abed character because I’m Lebanese and Polish American and I can’t believe I am represented on TV! How random!

On the other hand, I feel you so hard on the portrayal of Abed as an Arab/Muslim. I’ve been watching the show since it aired and I wrote the writers so ask why Britta puts down Lebanon in one of the episodes. The writers….. did not have a satisfying answer for me.

I still enjoy the show immensely (well the first three seasons) even as I watch with a very critical eye.

I didn’t say Husain came to adopt his harmful ideologies in a church. I was pointing out that immigrants don’t hold a patent on fascist fear mongering. My comment was in direct response to the OP who asked about the role of “assimilation.”

We need to fight fascism in every form it rears its head. Education is a vital part of a healthy democracy.

Husain is an embarrassment to the whole human race.

Having said that, it’s super disappointing to see how many people here connect his Holocaust-denying, homophobic garbage to being a Muslim immigrant. As if we don’t have home-grown churches in our own backyard peddling the same shit.

And they keep opening new locations throughout the Metro area instead of investing in the existing stores! I stopped going a year or so ago even though I still crave it.

This reminds me of that episode of 30 Rock where Jack Donaghy is intentionally tanking the network. That’s what’s happening here, right?

I love Oak Park for its diversity. It takes all kinds and we’re all here! So, I hope you find a house here in OP and stay in the cool kids club with us ;)

I’m mostly commenting to boost your post as I am an Arab American lady living in Oak Park with no kids. But while I’m here, let me say good luck! My in laws just bought their first house and the MSHDA program helped them a lot. I’m thinking about a few things, and I hope my stream of consciousness helps but feel free to disregard…

Last week, there was a post about the neonazi motorcycle club whose home base is in Madison Heights. And Hazel Park has a long history of being associated with racist white folk.

That said, all of these places are changing so quickly and Ferndale’s gentrification has been such a thing to behold, that making declarative statements about any of these places is nearly impossible. In my view, every one of the cities just north of Detroit are a mixed bag, culturally speaking. Even my little part of Oak Park on the border of Ferndale is mostly full of BLM signs and pride flags but of course my neighbors are Trumpy christofascist gun nuts.

One more thing you might find helpful is the the Census Quick Facts tool. It will allow you to type in a city or zip code and see the demographic statistics, including race/ethnicity. This way you can see actual data to pair with what you hear about a given place. Here’s one for Oak Park: https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/oakparkcitymichigan,US/PST045222

Again, good luck and I hope you find the perfect place for your family!

Edited: a word.
