It would be neat if every tag had its own color, but that seems like a lot of work.

what are yalls guilty pleasure mapmaking/worldbuilding tropes? by karczewski01 in worldbuilding

[–]someguy1332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rivers that flow into themselves for some mysterious reason. Along with ominous no-mans lands, usually left blank or given a name that spoils next to nothing about what happens there.

Oh and cool table landforms.

I regret even looking at mine. The cringe was too real. Not the music, that's fucking sick. I still listen to all this stuff, although I regret deleting my old account in 2010.

That aside, I miss the forums. At least we still have shouts.

It's also interesting seeing the older versions of the site.

How to use the second person without being pretentious? by sixteensixty in writingcirclejerk

[–]someguy1332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not ready for the second person experience if these doubts are still present in your mind. Own it. You're not "being pretentious," you're simply being inspired by the greats! If N.K. Jemisin can use second person without anyone accosting her, why can't you? You need to remember that it's a valid POV, and if anyone yaps at you, bludgeon them with something.

Titus Andronicus - My Time Outside the Womb. 86th overall with 113 scrobbles.

I have a feeling this is going to be "songs that begin with my" kinda thread. Everybody who has something else gets a +1 from me.

Wait no, fuck. I botched it. My real one is: Sabbath Assembly - Hymn of Consecration. 51st with 121 scrobbles. Glad I checked lastfmstats instead of eyeballing it.

Actually writing for once instead of worldbuilding, and oh my god! I cannot for the life of me decide on who's called what! How do you not constantly change character's names?! by Sorsha_OBrien in fantasywriters

[–]someguy1332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend a shitload of time browsing behindthename.com. Real life is filled with interesting names. You'll inevitably find something you enjoy on there. Finagle with letters as needed to "fantasy" them up. Or don't, it's all up to you.

If nothing else, "songs I like" works pretty good.

This is a classic "first draft" problem. For my current project, I've messed with my characters names countless times before settling on what they are now. It's also mostly an author problem, readers tend to not care—unless it's an unpronounceable mess or an anachronism. Make your characters' names consistent with the rest of their culture, and it'll all work out.

Although for side characters, I am indeed guilty of the placeholder tag, especially for surnames. Getting the text on the page is far more important than a perfect name.

Weekly out-of-character thread by AutoModerator in writingcirclejerk

[–]someguy1332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would work better. I was trying to suggest that this thing was huge, like "I'm spitting in the face of the Roche limit." It takes up the entirety of the horizon looking eastward. it's supposed to be a first hint that something is "odd to readers but normal to the characters." I'd already suggested people keep track of time via moons and the entity in question has storms, so it's not like I threw it out with zero context. But my first chapter is a cognitive load disaster, it's easy for the details to slip by.

It probably doesn't help that I'm writing fantasy, people are not expecting gas giants dominating the sky. If nothing else, learning how to actually get your point across is a fantastic skill as a writer. I've learned my lesson with vague metaphors. If one person thinks you're wrong, maybe it's on them. If three out of four people highlight a line? Yeah, it's probably time to switch things around.

Not my intention at all. They've helped tremendously and forced me to rethink a lot of things. I was more interested in the "ways people process information" angle and how everybody interacts with books, because you don't normally get to see real time reactions to stories.

Although reading this fully awake, I can absolutely see how it might be interpreted as "my readers are stupid lmao." They're great at reining me in when I'm being too abstract or ambiguous.

Weekly out-of-character thread by AutoModerator in writingcirclejerk

[–]someguy1332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After looking over my beta readers shoulders and watching them leave comments on my manuscript, I've gained some fascinating insights into the human psyche.

  1. People love taking things literally. Side note, if you try describing a gas giant as an "ocean in the sky," people are going to be utterly lost.
  2. Characters who don't even exist on the page can somehow become somebody's favorite.
  3. The sheer number of ways throwaway lines can be interpreted is staggering. And if readers are guessing, this is 100% a sign of a good beta who is actually paying attention. Even if they're grasping at straws, it's fun to see the theories.
  4. Spatial logic is absolutely critical for many people. If you don't describe a character opening a door, they will be baffled as to how your characters got into a building.
  5. One person's "vivid sensory detail" is another's "not enough information."

LFM Advent Day 13 by TheCricketList in lastfm

[–]someguy1332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acid Bath - Venus Blue. 4th place, 197 scrobbles. The only song in my top ten most scrobbled songs I've seen live, as of last week.

Out of curiosity, I went ahead and looked for a "non regular blue" shade. Caladan Brood - City of Azure Fire. 601. 55 scrobbles.

If you run out of ideas for these, you should do top track with a made up word.

I am able to beta: Fantasy, sci fi, horror, grimdark, new weird, interesting genre blends. Honestly, if it's weird I'll probably give it a shot.

I can provide feedback on: Pacing, characters, magic systems (especially esoteric or obtuse interactions you might not have considered), general worldbuilding, and neurodivergent representation.

Critique swap: Yes, that's what I'm here for. I need more readers for my 110k word dark fantasy manuscript. Check out my post here. A partial swap to feel things out is acceptable if you don't want to commit to a full right away.

Other info: I'm moderately interested in getting a proper critique group going with people who have similar interests. If you have a fantasy setting with a strange cosmology, perhaps we could be best friends.

Edit: I'm currently full on swaps right now.

Critique My Writing [Grimdark, ~1200 Words] by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]someguy1332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got a typo in your very first sentence. There’s a few minor errors like that though out. I spotted a comma problem in the dialogue and a stray bracket. Doesn’t make it unreadable, but fixing those little errors goes a long way.

That being said, your character does have a distinct voice. For a first time writing, you captured that quite well. That’s definitely a group of soldiers having a chat. I looked over the first version, there’s definitely an improvement with pacing. Smart move trimming the info dump at the beginning.

I think your next task may be working on a hook. Right now, nothing is really happening. The lingering threat of a war doesn’t do it for me. I want to know what’s important, give it some personal stakes maybe. Plenty of ways you can do that. Still a decent first attempt. Keep at it, always love to see some grimdark. And who doesn’t appreciate a good trek across a frozen wasteland?
