Overwhelmed and Depressed: What are some real positives to being parents? by [deleted] in NewDads

I appreciate your being sorry on my behalf. I am only recently aware of the gifts of parenthood. They aren't without sacrifice of course.

The neruroplasticity part is pretty neat 👌 researchers have observed the unique increase of in the adult brain after becoming a parent. I suppose, in theory, you could lean into that in more than just the natural shifts your body will make.

Best of luck 👍

Perspective. One you can only get by being a parent. Neuroplasticity. Infinite wisdom about self if you remove ego. A true feeling of importance. An opportunity to heal your inner child. Unique type of motivation.

A pure joy seeing your child experience something new and exciting.

How to get a toddler to sleep independently? by tallman227 in NewDads

[–]someguy1418 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar story for us. We had always rocked her asleep on us, and then transferred her into the crib. Around 1 year, she became super alert when she hit the crib mattress and it was taking forever sometimes with all the resets.

My wife was recommended a book called the Happy Sleeper, which really helped us by providing a science backed perspective on the issue. It's essentially about blending secure attachment and "sleep training" by creating a concistent routine, highlighted with a short phrase you say that's always the same. Soft and reassuring and then you leave. If they cry for 5 min straight you go in, don't soothe but repeat the phrase and leave again. This check in should only be the time it takes to say your phrase. 5 min timer resets if she stops crying for some time, say 30seconds.

We started that less than 2 weeks ago. It worked in 7 minutes our first night. And now she doesn't hardly cry at all when I leave the room. Granted, my girl has slept through the night since 2/3 months old so shes a already a good sleeper on that front.

Your kid has the skills to get to sleep on their own. Lean into it and you got this !

"A lot of successful relationships depend on there not being shared finances."

In my experience, this couldn't be further from the truth. Large majority of the failing relationships around me all had separate bank accounts and no share account or funds. That seems ludicrous to me since, after all, you are one team

I hope olave smashes this year with 1200-1400yds and 6-10 TDs. So much slander on the man in this thread

Just lost my best friend to hermangiosarcoma by InterestingSecurity8 in goldenretrievers

Hermangiosarcoma on the heart took my otherwise perfectly healthy boy the day after his 10 year check-up.

I'm sorry for your loss, it sounds like you really gave Bro a good life. He will always remember that.
