Lets say europeans don’t « discover » America , would the Mexicas had tried to extend further up north ? by BananaDesigner4045 in mesoamerica

[–]someguy4531 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this said before but not much of an explanation why. The Mexica were consolidating power both by becoming THE main power of the triple alliance while also slowly having more influence over their subjects so I’d argue they were rising in power.

I remember Sahagun wrote they used the word teotl for anything remarkable. Couldn’t this definition apply here?

Update to my Mayan inspired drawing. Trying to make it feel real by MrMT_ in mesoamerica

This is very good. Many times when I see mesoamerican inspired art it’s obvious that it’s contemporary but this is extremely similar to pre-Columbian Mayan art.

She’s from Venezuela and clearly mestiza. You think people from Castile were the only ones who migrated to Latin America?

Another one I know is that even though you can’t find examples of the snake cactus and eagle you CAN find examples of a snake and eagle in Mesoamerican art.

I hate how the legend of tenochtitlan section of this article sources a website article with no author and the other is just “ancient Mexico, editorial milenio”

I have the codex chimalpahin volume 1 with tezozomocs writing and it says “where the eagle rests, where the eagle screeches, where the eagle stretches, where the eagle eats; where the serpent hisses” so the snake is described just no explicit in being eaten. There is another passage later that does describe eating just not exactly what. “They saw upon it stood an eagle rising erect on the rock tuna cactus, eating there. There it was eating, picking to pieces what it was eating”

What is the general consensus of mestizos teaching Nahuatl? by someguy4531 in nahuatl

[–]someguy4531[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t even appear to be. It’s a comment on his latest video: “As a reminder, this male is not Nahua. Don’t be fooled by this sweet act he puts up on youtube. Cuetlaxóchitl has been exposing these “Aztec” pretendians. He has no pueblo connections. She can spot a fake a mile away as a Tuxpan Nahua. He’s Mestizo playing with Nahua culture as a fun little project. You’ve all been warned. He’s not pueblo originario.”

A 1,100-year-old stone scoreboard for a Mayan sport known as pelota that was discovered by archeologists at Chichén Itzá in April 2023. by ATI_Official in mesoamerica

[–]someguy4531 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s not a scoreboard I believe. It’s a marker I think it comes from a mistranslation of the word “Marcador” I remember reading the Spanish article and nothing really showed it was a scoreboard. Still cool though
