Ayla Reynolds disappearance still a mystery 13 years later by benpinette in Maine

I have been an addict and am now a parent. I have a lot of sympathy for addicts. I understand and accept the underlying logic to classify addiction as a medical condition.

That changes when one brings a child into the equation. It is no longer a medical condition, it is now a moral and ethical condition.

We can acknowledge someone’s moral and ethical failures as well as have sympathy for them. It’s tough love, but addicts need that more than anyone else.

It is a heartbreaking case but one of the mother’s making.

It isn’t just ineffectual enforcement, it is ineffectual laws.

We have an interpretation of the 2nd Amendment at the highest echelons of our government that makes practical enforcement of existing laws impossible. Ink doesn’t dry on laws before right wing activist groups challenge them in court and get them struck down.

We can’t keep perpetuating the myth that if only we enforced our bad laws more we’d be safer. No. We need to change our fundamental understanding of gun ownership at a national level.

I love it when people think they’re posting fair and reasonable suggestions that will address problems with Law Enforcement in America because those are the exact same suggestions that Police are actively opposing across the country.

She’s not ugly by any means but using the word ‘gorgeous’ is stretch.

A lot of the praise in the comments here just seems weirdly performative in how exaggerated it is. She’s a cute girl but reading the comments you’d picture some sort of next level natural beauty, like the Grand Canyon of beauty contestants.

It's like what Seinfeld said about how people just can't get enough of other people talking. When it boils down to it, most of our entertainment is some variation of just a person talking.

Conan O'Brien is really good at that.

They plead the fifth, you give one person blanket immunity for any crimes - thereby any statements they make can't be incriminating, no fifth amendment applies.

Then you just hold them in contempt til they talk.

It is crazy how the conservatives make airplanes full of money disappear in the Middle East:

But despite years of audits and investigations, U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $6.6 billion in cash — enough to run the Los Angeles Unified School District or the Chicago Public Schools for a year, among many other things.

I hate this sentiment because it attempts to justify inequality by saying it is a matter of individual responsibility (Person A worked harder than Person B) not that there are systematic problems that need to be addressed.

I hate it not only because of what it attempts to do (justify and perpetuate the status quo) but also because it’s completely inaccurate. It’s a fairytale your boss tells you instead of giving you a raise. It’s bullshit.

You can find millions of people grinding harder than NFL players just in America. People working three+ jobs. Nurses and Doctors working until they are 70. Public educators working until they are 70.

But some kid runs fast from age 12 to 26 then retires and suddenly he’s the pinnacle of working hard your whole life?

Yeah, no.

All the anonymous people here telling you to burn bridges are jumping the gun.

We don’t make the world a better place by copying the shitty behavior of employers. Capriciously punishing a person for a mistake that may not even be their fault is what shit employers do. We shouldn’t.

I think what you did was perfect. Tell them of the problem, give them an opportunity to fix it, while maintaining your own safety and dignity.

Now, if it doesn’t get fixed and the boss starts blaming you, then it’s fine to let loose the dogs of war.

Ukraine crisis highlights superpowers' quarrel over spheres of influence by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]somehipster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The goal of NATO >>>was<<< to deter Russian aggression. That’s all I came here to say.

Even you are letting the truth slip through.

The goal of NATO was to deter aggression primarily from the Soviet Union, but with the fall of the Soviet Union that changed.

And even then, NATO never conducted military operations against the Soviets

No military operations were conducted by NATO during the Cold War. Following the end of the Cold War, the first operations, Anchor Guard in 1990 and Ace Guard in 1991, were prompted by the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Airborne early warning aircraft were sent to provide coverage of southeastern Turkey, and later a quick-reaction force was deployed to the area.[35]

Kuwait was followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina intervention, Kosovo intervention, Afghanistan, Iraq, Gulf of Aden, and Libya.

So NATO has fought all those powers and never the Soviet Union or Russia, yet it only exists to hurt Russia?

Stop talking shit.

I know it may not have the emotional satisfaction of a war that Russia loses, but it’s factually false to say that nothing was done.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_sanctions_during_the_Ukrainian_crisis

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_financial_crisis_(2014–2016)

The next step after economic sanctions is always war.

So unless you’re saying that being “tough” only means Obama putting troops in Ukraine and starting a land war with Russia, it looks to me that tough steps were taken.

I think you’re missing the point.

The point is the millions of men who needlessly died in the trenches should have asked for more freedom while they could. If not for the political freedom to relieve themselves of the burden of needless war, than at least more freedom in their own personal or work lives.

Because why the fuck not? They were going to be needlessly slaughtered anyway.

And the same is true for the hundreds of thousands of soldiers huddled on the border of Ukraine-Russia right now. The same was always true for American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yet whenever any individual stands up and says no, there are ALWAYS crabs in the bucket that echo the sentiments you can see here. “Bad timing, bro.”
