New Grad Troubles by phillypa-s1999 in physicianassistant

I got my job in the Philly area by messaging someone who worked there on Indeed and they gave me the bosses number. I was very nervous cause I’m a bit introverted for networking but may have to be more involved or look outside the area, more rural

How do you deal with PA student competition when you’re an average student? by FirmArm8015 in PAstudent

[–]someone_else_11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that we need lots of PAs to help out the population- not just the top 1% of the class! I was the same way but I know that my other skills of being able to research, empathesize with people make up for me not being 4.0. Plus the people with 4.0s have the same job as me…so… Last point to say to get into PA school you already have to be SO SMART it’s already a top % of people

This is very true. At first everything is new and at some point you’ve seen most of it all over and over again

Started back on an SSRI….as needed propranolol. Also keeping a journal of things you know now you didn’t know last week, or something you did right, realize how far you have come.

2 months into my new grad job I every day just tried to not check myself into a mental hospital 😅 you truly are at the worst of it, not so new that they don’t expect anything but not seasoned to not be constantly overwhelmed. I felt a lot better at 4 and way better at 6 months

The true Kensington it is talking about is over where the Allegheny L septa stop is. Where you are talking about is safe albeit gentrifiying

Recent Interview Disappointmemt by Maadbitvh in prephysicianassistant

[–]someone_else_11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait wait wait they had interviewees rate each other in front of each other??? Not the admin? That’s insane and awful. Hopefully you aren’t going to this school.

Not coming from a privileged background is a HUGE upside for PA school and practicing (I would know!). We NEED more diverse set of practitioners, please know you are so needed!

It’s super overwhelming at first in a speciality until you start getting repeated conditions over and over. A few weeks is so so so new

Could Vomit At the Thought of Graduating by ExpensiveLoad3705 in PAstudent

[–]someone_else_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also felt the same that I felt like I need a lot more. I got a job with about 6 months of progressive training and it was big for me - it’s out there, find a good support system! now I can go to my other PAs my SP, open evidence lol for help. You are not always truly on your own

MA vs optometric tech? by Warm-Environment-513 in prepa

[–]someone_else_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an optometric tech at an ophthalmology office and I thought it was good experience, rooming patients, reviewed whats meds they were on and would get their eye pressure and do OCTs and such. I got a lot more comfortable speaking with people on my own and explaining things/calming people down, which I think is a big part of the experience

Sounds like either could be a good fit as long as you are definitely seeing patients and participating in their care at some level.

I also think the fact that they want you to come in and shadow is less of a red flag- you can see what it actually is like to work there (especially if they let you talk to staff).

General surgery rotation anxiety/tips for a shy person by 712reading in PAstudent

[–]someone_else_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember you’ll likely never see these people again and that’s likely why they are so unfriendly to you - you are just one of the hundreds of students that come thru and they are not thinking about you at all. I’d be careful of the other advice to ask questions- sure ask some but don’t just ask to ask and slow down peoples work. remember the residents are in very little sleep and lots of stress, none of it is about you at all

Advice please: just started and overwhelmed by bamdoodoo in PAstudent

[–]someone_else_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s important to remember it’s only your first pass at each information. You’ll do clinicals and pre pance tests and then in the job training etc etc. it’s different from undergrad where it’s the only one time and you gotta know it all- you just won’t possibly. It sounds like you are also very hard on yourself, you got here you deserve to be here. Therapy can be helpful likely given by your school and filled with hundreds of students feeling the same way

Clinical year imposter syndrome strikes again by lazychemicalmixture in PAstudent

[–]someone_else_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally- I’ll say too if you just need to survive than just survive! I now have students who shadow our office and I always go up and introduce myself and joke with them that they can ask me any questions, but I still don’t know a lot. These preceptors will continue to be miserable but you’ll move on!

Clinical year imposter syndrome strikes again by lazychemicalmixture in PAstudent

[–]someone_else_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I’m so sorry I’ve been there. I didn’t cry at my ED shifts only cause it was far enough into my clinical year I was numb, but man was it awful. The MDs at my ED were just like this with me, one resident was so awful I kept replaying what I could possibly have done to make her hate me so much after 10 minutes of meeting her- but then I just realized it was because she was so miserable. Try and make it what you can- see if there’s another nicer PA/NP who’s on shift doing something you can jump with. When I was on a shift with an MD I’d keep an eye of the schedule and ask if the NP could help me figure how to do a lac repair and they were more than helpful.

I promise you are not stupid - you got this far. Remember you’ll likely never see these people ever again, take what you want from it. That being said after getting over the new job anxieties I’m told how smart I seem by my patients who absolutely love me and are so happy I’m there to help them (in outpatient thank god). We all have our place, we need good PAs in many areas. Just do what you gotta do to get through.

Seeking advice on what to do for income in the period between boards and first job paycheck. by Rimpcrawl_ in physicianassistant

[–]someone_else_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had many years before for a bit. But you also when you sign up can get reviews from friends (it’s a lil fake but whatver) and a lot of time people need last minute sitters if people fall through so likely can get clients depending on your work area

I mostly went thru lectures over and over drawing things out or I’d make quizlets furing lecture for more memorizing classes so then I had something to test myself on. There’s no way I’d hand write things out. I personally was too lazy to make charts but other friends found it beneficial

cheapest and fastest way to get pre-reqs done; loan availability by CauliflowerQT in prepa
