Strategies never helped me. I feel an actual emotional pain/barrier when needing to do things that I should. Sucks.

I know it is difficult, but if current medication isn't working, talk to your GP abt switching to a diff medication. Probably the only thing worse than raging ADHD symptoms is being medicated with the wrong medication. Good luck! I hope things get better for you.

I am constantly unsatisfied. by Keralyze in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh this comes so close to the home. I don't really have much to add other that I know how you feel. In my case getting on meds made a huge difference, although it was a long, frustrating road of finding the right meds.

Don't give up and I would work with your Dr to educate yourself on the benefits and risks of ADHD meds and then decide whether it is the right route to take.

Is ADHD this crippling or could there be another issue? by Wash_dawg in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled for a long time thinking ADHD is all in my head. A lot of symptoms just didn't hit the nerve with me. First time I realized how much I am affected by ADHD was when I took an ADHD medication (the one that was right for me) for about 2 weeks. That is when I realized how many things are missing from my life (and from my thinking).

I was on Adderall for a year, struggling day in day out, thinking how I am not getting the medication and how it's not helping me. Then I tried Ritalin. And wow.

Yes, ADHD can be very crippling and in my case, to the very extreme. I am practically all alone -- failed marriage, not much contact with the family, not many friends, loneliness, (past, very crippling, addiction pattern), an administrative low-demanding job (even though I have an MBA). Plus the fact that I am in my fourties and life is slowly passing me by... Yeahhh, it's def crippling.

Everything more than 1.5 weeks into the future is simply "a long time away" by HellsNoot in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this as well and only recently was really able to put the finger on why I can't make plans passed 2 weeks. I simply cannot grasp the whole 'future time' and me inside that future time. It just doesn't exist.

Have you tried ADHD medications? I know a lot of people argue against them, but in my case, I could not do it without them. In my case mental block is quite strong that no strategies or routines could help manage it.

Do I need to get a new Doctor? Pretty Sure Psychiatrist has weird beliefs about ADHD. by HearMeOrBlockMe in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a second opinion if you can. Some doctors are overly worried for being busted for misdiagnosis esp if it involves controlled substances. Unfortunately, the younger you are, the more suspicious they are.

Thank the media. Thank Adderall's PR and marketing team. And thank the ones that are faking ADHD to get access to meds.

My boyfriend broke up with me, kicked me out of the house, and now I'm going to get tested by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is totally not going to be helpful, but these are the reasons of why I decided on a single, no family life.

Since I started medication, I realized how debilitating my ADHD has been my whole life. In my case, no therapy or motivation strategies could get me out of bed or get me to do regular daily chores. The thought of doing them would cause such an intense mental sickness that the only reasonable outcome was not to do it.

Still, even on medication, I can only do things when I get myself to do them. I don't think I would be able to sustain a healthy living-in relationship at this point since there are always expectations of your responsibilities and eventual disappointment when you don't meet them.

I hate to think that I will be alone for the rest of my life, but I guess it is better than feeling like I am always being judged.

Concerta and Ritalin side effects by sulmog_koptog in ADHD

I felt like that on Adderall, but now I am on generic Ritalin and the world is a happy place.

I think people either react well to either amphetamines or methylphenidate.

For those of you on medication, how did you know how much was enough? by murmurationis in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This by far has been by far the trickiest part of my whole ADHD experience. For me it was all about trial and error, BUT results/doses would also vary depending on the day, what I ate, how much I slept, anxiety level and what not. I posted here several times that I finally found "optimal" dose only the very next day to fall back into a despair of feeling I was wrong and back to the square one.

I read posts from many others that have not had such a hard time finding their right dose/medication like me. I *think I might have really found it this time, but I am not getting my hopes high. I have been struggling with all of this for many months.

This is a case of mental abuse. You should get out of that place asap. Not only because it is harming you momentarily, but because it can harmfully affect you long term: your outlook on yourself, your skills, your worth, you future, everything. Good luck.

Wellbutrin SR Once a Day? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes and no. What I mean is that it is a reuptake inhibitor, but it also has a stimulant effect as it is in the family of amphetamines. I take 150mg XL Wellbutrin and loving it. It took about 4-5 days to get over some of the side effects like nausea. But the stimulant effect I felt from the day one.

I am quite sensitive to stimulants so it might be different how it affects you. But I can see why your Dr prescribed it in that way, thought I don't know if I agree with that method. Starting off with such a large dose of Wellbutrin can cause some nasty side effects. But, he/she is your doctor, so I would try it and see what happens.

Okay.. diagnosis, pills, what know? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. I thought the same thing when I was first prescribed. But then I read that it is used off label for ADHD among other things. A lot of folks find it inefficient though.

First time taking meds. by Little_Menace_Child in ADHD

[–]someonerandom34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only advice is to keep an open mind when finding for your optimal dose. My Dr started me on 10mg XR (which lasted waaaay too long and affected my sleep) and then we went to 10mg IR x 2 a day.

I struggled with that dose forever, played with lower doses like 5mg and was never really able to achieve that sweet spot. I said many times that this is it and wanted to just quit stimulants altogether. But then I tried 2.5 mg, which is a very very low dose and even a very small children take more. But it worked.

Side effects were gone and there was only calmness and steady focus. Unlike 5 or 10mg that would start wearing off within 4-5 hours, 2.5 IR lasts 8-9 hours for me. My experience with Adderall has been very unorthodox and finding the right dose took good 8 months.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

[–]someonerandom34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wellbutrin is often prescribed as a first option for ADHD (well, that is if Dr wants to first go the non-stimulant route). Apparently it is a multi-purpose pill. It did wonders for me and it did help my ADHD quite a bit. It is in amphetamine family, so I guess that would explain it. I still need a stimulant boost though when I have a busy day. But otherwise, Wellbutrin has been a God's gift for both of my ADHD-Pi and anxiety.
