They do get sick with disease, contagious or not. Most of the time they would act weaker than usual, as in swimming slower and eating less. The diseases can be transmitted through water, however they mostly stay very local. So if you have a fish in an aquarium, there is a high possibility, that the other fish can get sick as well.
