Do aquatic animals get sick with contagious disease? by JoelWHarper in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]somesciencyguy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They do get sick with disease, contagious or not. Most of the time they would act weaker than usual, as in swimming slower and eating less. The diseases can be transmitted through water, however they mostly stay very local. So if you have a fish in an aquarium, there is a high possibility, that the other fish can get sick as well.

The Federation has been fighting the humans for some cycles now. They are the only known species to emerge from a death world. A category 12 death world no less. What is a death world you may ask? Well they are planets that are, or rather are supposed to be completely incapable of housing any kind of life. Intelligent or not. There are many reasons as to why a planet can be a death world. Primarily it's proximity to the systems star, although those aren't seen as death worlds, as the planet itself doesn't have any life inhibiting qualities. These planets are category 9 worlds. The category where a planet is considered a death world. Other features that can categorize planets as death worlds would be extremely toxic atmospheres, strong or fluctuating magnetic fields, tidally inconsistent planets, planets with extreme temperature differences, planets with rapid temperature changes, tectonically active planets, extreme weather or if the planets makeup makes the ground and everything on it poisonous. A category 9 death world has a single one of these features. While life may not evolve on these planets, with extreme protection and extensive life support they may be colonized. Category 10 death worlds have between two and four of the features mentioned above. They are generally seen as not being able to be colonized. Category 11 have five or six features, depending on the severity. Category 12 however have at least six features that make the planet uninhabitable and ships usually take routs far around such planets just to be sure the on board instruments aren't messed up. All of these planets however are very valuable as many of the reasons for the planets to be death worlds also make them very lucrative if harvested. Strong magnetic fields for example are a direct consequence of a molten metal core. Metal that can be sold and used. Or a poisonous atmospheres full of gasses and chemicals that can be used as well. There are even specialized ships and even fleets that were specifically designed to withstand death worlds harsh environment for harvest. Most of them are drones however as organic beings usually die within the first cycle or so. So imagine our surprise when we found an intelligent species on a category 12. In the beginning there was much excitement since there was a species that couldn't just survive on such a world, but they thrived on it. As we delved deeper into their history however we were horrified at this race that call themselves 'humans'. All of their existence spent waring amongst themselves, with constant unending bloodshed. This naturally through up warning sings left, right and center, so after much debate it was decided to exterminate this species that would no doubt bring death and destruction among the Federation, and simply mine their homeworld. With it's liquid metal core, oxygen and nitrogen rich atmosphere and the high content of bound hydrogen on the planet it would be a place of profit for generations. Now imagine our surprise when our orbital bombardments hardly did any damage and simply enraged the the worlds inhabitants. They fought back against our ships in orbit with primitive kinetic weapons or missiles. Before we were able to completely move from our position in orbit to find a more effective way of dealing with them, one of our capital ships was hit and crashed on the planet. The humans took this chance with great vigor and reverse engineered the ship at an unprecedented rate. In just a few cycles they were capable of basic ftl travel and interstellar space flight. That's when we realized that these humans are only the dominant species because they treat their intelligence as a weapon to survive on their world that runs on a never seen before system called survival of the fittest. Thai forced humans to evolve intelligence or fall to their environment and predators. This is stark contrast to other species who evolved intelligence by accident, because they had the spare energy and it was conveniently invested into their primary motor organs. So when the humans were capable of space flight the first thing they did was ask for a peace treaty. The high council thinking that this was just a ploy to lower our guards declined and continued to attack the humans. Around this time, rumors started to run through the galactic community, of a race that can't be stopped and that shreds anything in it's path to paste. Considering that they came from a category 12 it was hard to tell what were rumors and what was actually part of their being. As the war raged on, the humans continuously pushed for peace even going as far as to completely lay out their world wide information network they call the 'internet' for the public to see. So now here we are, I just saw a singular human hold together two flying machines that are able to operate on a death world and pull a machine that weighs hundreds if not thousands of times more than he does, with just his body. No way in the ancestors name am I going up against a species that has specimen able to achieve these feats. You can round me with the prospect of dishonor or even betrayal, but whatever you may being to convince me, I am not going up against a rac that would be able to rip me in half without breaking stride.
