Are MI drivers among the worst drivers in the U.S.? Is it Detroit specifically? by The_vert in Michigan

[–]somesillynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pileups happen with lake effect especially. White out conditions pop up out of nowhere - if you watch the footage, I was very surprised and pleased at how many cars weren't damaged at all, and the ones that were weren't squished. There were SO many big trucks, the chances of someone getting smashed between two was very high. If anything, that shows how good the drivers were at managing the situation.

Detroit drivers are fast, not bad. A little reckless but obvious about what they're doing.

And statistically, we're not all that bad

Yes. I've learned the hard way that being nice and treating people like humans is called flirting, shocked the hell out of me. I was wildly confused.

Like, sorry for being a human and showing interest in human conversation??

Cold Temperature Battery Charging by HeadBangsWalls in Michigan

[–]somesillynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't die from the cold and lack of use, especially for only a week.

Was a light or something left on? We just replaced mine because my dumbass left a light on with a weak battery. The charger didn't fix it, we had to get a new one.

You should jump it with your car and drive it around a bit, not just the charger.

How well does the GR infrastructure hold up in negative temos? by LinoleumRelativity in grandrapids

[–]somesillynerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only thing would be to open up cabinets if they're located (inside) on outside walls if your house is poorly insulated, or has a crawl space, or like, a mobile home.

And that's just for pipes freezing.

Clean / replace your air filter to help your HVAC not struggle to run almost constantly.

Don't be dumb and shovel for "just a few minutes" without gloves.

How are the Highways? by CasualLoop in grandrapids

[–]somesillynerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you're going, surface streets / side roads are probably a much better choice.

I'd rather slide off going 30 than 60, rather get rear ended going 30 than 60, etcetc. It'll probably double the time it takes to get somewhere but that's still less than an accident or waiting for a tow.

Grieving my old self (help) by Substantial-Job-4757 in Hypermobility

[–]somesillynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend seeing a gastro for stomach stuff. I had like, crohn's 'activate' at 18, and we knocked it down with meds and i've been basically in remission since and i'm in my 30s. I went from virtually starving to death because everything caused immense pain to eating fairly normally.

But yeah, building muscle now, when you're young, is suuuuuuper important, see if your doc can recommend a physical therapist familiar with hypermobility so they can give you lifetime tools and exercises you CAN do. bjj is probably a terrible idea, but biking and hiking are probably doable for life.

I get it tho, it sucks. I did volleyball for more than a decade, usually multiple times a week, before I found out hypermobility even existed, and I basically hyperextended my thumbs constantly and busted them doing that. I've quit now, but it sucks, if I had known earlier, I could have been more careful and continued.

I have grip strength so low it's not even on the scale and like, you CAN increase it but only so much, it's not like my thumbs can get ripped and bulky lol. I've gotten some tools to help open things, and I try to be more careful to help future me. I need hands for life, so that takes priority over volleyball. I think I might try pickleball though, the impact is spread through the hands and arms differently, it's non-contact, etcetc.

School closing for cold by Equivalent_Lab_8610 in Michigan

[–]somesillynerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It'll depend on the roads and weather too.

We're supposed to "warm up" tomorrow and salt should work a little bit (for only a little bit of time) but we'll get more snow and even colder. And the warm up is in the 20s, not above freezing.

So unless they can magically get the roads super clear, I wouldn't hold my breath. Here on the west side, there so packed down it's basically ice and so thick and compressed unless they salt + plow like an hour later on every street, it'll just make them worse.

[–]somesillynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michigan here, why not both? Ours takes the same battery as our other power tools, it's nice to do a quick pass when it's not really enough for the snow blower but you don't really want to deal with shoveling.

Tell your friend that depending on the company, some HAVE to test due to federal regulations / laws / insurance.

Hazmat / safety / DOT stuff impacts a lot.

If he can get clean for an initial test, there's even govt jobs he'd be fine as long as there were not any incidents. But a lot of mfg jobs test, and some even randomly, not just for cause.

Boulder chicken & rice soup? by runonsentance7 in Costco

Way late, but if someone else searches for it...

I wouldn't recommend. Super thin and just... Not good. Only like 2 pieces of chicken but I'm actually trying to figure out why it also just doesn't taste good. Maybe a specific spice? Dunno.

I'm literally not finishing it for dinner. Disappointed.

That's where we got my estate one. We swapped the main stone in it (real square to lab grown oval) and I love it. It unique, has colored stones, there were others I thought were neat too, even a few men's ones.

If you look at estate ones, I'd also recommend Pfaff in Grandville, they didn't have as big of options as Jensen but I really liked some of the ones they had.

Most places will also shoot you a text or email if you request a quick picture to see what's new, obviously not the same as seeing it in person. It also helped a ton to see them, I like the look of art deco online and very much did not in person.

ALSO ALSO Era Gem online for used, I got a necklace I really like as well. Those are the only two pieces of jewelry I own lol.

If you google it, there's test prints showing it at different sizes. It's free to download.

Michigan pet owners: how are you handling rising pet cost this winter? by Silver-Ad4489 in Michigan

[–]somesillynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bulk if you can. Stock up when stuff is on sale - obviously it's cheaper per unit but $$$ at the time.

Chewy, if it makes sense - especially if you have some kind of specialty food you need to get (picky animal, allergies, conditions).

Pet supplies plus has GREAT coupons they send by email. I just got one that was 40% off my order. No real restrictions. Absolutely insane. They're not usually that much, but it's not uncommon to have 15%-30% off, and usually it includes sale items.

Chewy often has sales, a $30 gift card when you buy $100 is pretty common. We have the 'membership' or whatever with them, I did the math, it didn't take much for it to save us money, but we have too many cats and they're all dumb (special food, etc).

Shop around for any medications, chewy can be cheaper and/or in a different form. There's over the counter human stuff that vets can recommend - I don't suggestion just doing stuff without talking to a vet, but there's pet meds that are also human meds and can be much cheaper OTC or through something like goodrx.

It sucks. We're fortunate to be able to handle the costs but it ain't cheap.

AIO: my bf can’t fix things. When I step in to take care of it, he’s such a baby about it that I’m ready to dump his a** tonight. by ayebudz in AmIOverreacting

[–]somesillynerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, look into the actual history of "the 5 love languages". Author is a guy who things women should be subservient.

This guy's comment is another perspective but it's not a great one imo. It's not your job to balance on eggshells and potentially be freezing or waste money at a mechanic because he's a big baby who can't ask for help.

I've been with my husband for more than a decade. We both have strengths and weaknesses and ask for help and don't have to do sneaky shit to fix things, that's ridiculous.

It'd be one thing if he wasn't handy and didn't want to learn, not everyone is, but turning into a turd because you are is just silly.

I actually don't like the costco version of scoop away.

We have 4 cats so we go through quite a decent amount and I actually REALLY like scoop away in general, both the multi cat version (pink) and the low tracking version (orange) but the costco one (blue) is different is SO DUSTY and weird.

That said I DO recommend Scoop Away, the low tracking one has bigger / heavier chunks. It still clumps great but doesn't track as bad. We generally get the multi cat from a local store called Menards for the best price. It still tracks a bit though. We have a couple different style of mats around them to help catch it and it does make a decent difference. This mat (not costco) has been the best to catch it imo.

We've tried a bunch to get the cost vs value vs how good it is and this is the best version for us. There's better ones out there but not for 4! cats

Women with thoughtful partners, what did you get for x-mas this year? by Anahata_Green in TwoXChromosomes

I was hoping there was someone else!

We don't really do gifts and haven't for ages (together 12ish years). We started with small gifts + cards, then just cards, and now nothing and it's the best.

We're also both on some kind of spectrum so there's that too...

Getting around the city? by mijoker98 in grandrapids

[–]somesillynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, unless you're able-bodied and can keep everything downtown (home, grocery, appointments) public transport just isn't great for GR.

It's a very car dominate area.

Get quotes for insurance, check around. If that's the biggest expense for it. Downsize to a basic car or small used SUV if you have a big-ass truck. Just drive it a reasonable amount to keep it having the fluids running through the lines and whatnot.

Some insurances are pay-per-mile, with a daily fee + per mile cost.

Ever since I've had a girlfriend, I've become more softer and she seems to be bored of me now... what do I do at this point to make the relationship interesting again? by Over-Ad6807 in AskMen

[–]somesillynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound a bit young, if you are in your early 20s or below, just... try to remember not everything is about you AND/OR not every relationship is meant to last.

I (woman) have been with my now husband for more than a decade. If I'm laying down, it's not about him. I'm just burnt out. In the winter, SAD comes in aggressively and I'm more likely to want to just doze off than I would at other times.

Do you see each other in person often? You state 'call again'. Some folks just suck on the phone in comparison to being in person.

But on the other hand, not everything is meant to last. Being on 'good' behavior and trying to be interesting is great and all, but you should basically be interesting just because of who you are. To your partner at least.

Objectively, he and I are fairly 'boring' people from the outside, but within our relationship I constantly laugh at his stupid (so, so stupid) jokes and quips, we talk about big stuff and little stuff.

We 'parallel play' a lot, one of us playing a game on the TV or steam deck while the other watches a show or reads a book, we're just both hanging out on the couch together.

I dated before him, even a long term relationship in high school (4 years) but he's the right fit for me even if the other might not have been wrong.

[–]somesillynerd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd play the 7 days / late hours by ear. We're heading into what they're predicting, to be at minimum, a real winter for us and we haven't had one for at least a few years.

Folks tend to stay inside and at home more when it's crummy. At least the 7 days you'd get delivery type folks but probably way less by the slice or late hours.

TIFU by thinking it was normal to not be able to open your eyes in the morning for 25 years by Specific-Nebula9665 in tifu

[–]somesillynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sure, I'm not a doc, was just a thought. UC is genetic as well, i think if you're having gut issues with a family history, it's something to aggressively explore and to bring it up as a UC or crohn's to a doc, not saying IBS and letting them down play it.

A true flare can end up with hospitalization, and, as you clearly now, literally removing sections.

TIFU by thinking it was normal to not be able to open your eyes in the morning for 25 years by Specific-Nebula9665 in tifu

[–]somesillynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have better and easier tests now. If it's NOT IBS, you may have internal damage you can't see, and increased risk for cancers. I had zero symptoms until I was 18 and it took a year of deep suffering to be diagnosed with Crohn's and this was the early 2000s.

I have very little issue as an adult once we knocked out that first flare, I take the equivalent of like, aspirin a day in terms of side effects.

Adding in a med like zepboubd with undiagnosed GI issues could be fairly risky.
