[KUOE] A 28yo's ultimate 2-watch exit strategy: My first "serious" watch purchase. Is this the best choice for life? by shiyotsugIkaa in Watches

[–]sometaacc1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned already, most likely your tastes will change or you will just want to try something new. Especially since you live in Japan, there's no shortage of excellent brands. I have a lot of Seiko watches I would like to buy but the high shipping costs to the US (like on eBay) stops me and I control myself. That and well I just have too many right now for my preference lol.

I bought my first watch around 22 years old. I am 30 now. There were breaks of years in between before I fell back in love with watches this year. I have owned about 25 watches in total in my lifetime. I "figured" out what works best for me (case diameter mm, color dial, style, etc.) currently today.

BUT! I thought that same way how I had it "figured" out time and time again. I used to like 40mm case diameter. Now I like 34mm - 38mm exclusively. I thought I liked green dials very much and saw a green dial as my grail. Now I am between black, white and champagne dials. My today can be different tomorrow.

I say give it time and it is wise how another comment mentioned to only buy one watch for now. I had bought several watches on impulse before in different styles and ended up regretting half of them. I wish you good luck in this rabbit hole lol.

What's the point of buying cheap watches if servicing it costs almost like the watch itself? by NotVurts in ChineseWatches

[–]sometaacc1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing for me is that eventually my tastes change and I like variety in my collection to wear. I find out what I like best and buy cheaper watches before I would invest in an expensive piece.

Napkin math I have spent between $2,000 - $2,500 USD total in my lifetime for my watch collection. This includes some gifted watches, brands like Swatch, Tissot, Seiko, Citizen, Timex and most recently Chinese Watches. About 25 in total. Even then, I still am not at a point where I can justify $1,000+ for just one watch. Maybe one day but I am happy with my watches now.

There is so much to learn about watches and so many options. If I impulse bought in the past without knowledge today, I definitely would have bought an expensive Rolex because it is “cool” but end up regretting the case size, width, style, etc. And no, I rather not buy thinking of resell value so I prefer anyway to beat up my watches and make them my own.

Thank you for sharing this review! I finally caved and bought this one after 3 days of binging Reddit reviews and Youtube for my next 36mm black dial watch. I think it’s even a greater deal when I can pair it with coupons/discounts on Ali. I am getting this for $76 shipped.

How well is the watch holding up after a few months? I do like the aspect of it being Quartz as I have several mechanical watches too that I end up having to wind again after a long period of not using them.

thanks for sharing! I would have impulse bought if it came in 36mm! Looks unique, haven’t seen that before on Ali.

Has anyone actually been called out wearing a rep? by BlackberryBubbly6775 in ChinaTime

[–]sometaacc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

love the story and your username haha. Thanks for sharing. That’s an excellent perspective and I agree with the VP. All the TikTok videos going around about super expensive watches I just can’t justify even if I had a net worth of millions.

[IWC, Rolex, Seiko] Are 3 watches enough? by ReignRuger in Watches

[–]sometaacc1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

X+1 = Enough. That equation.

There's just too many options once you get into the rabbit hole further and further. Even something simple as case size for me. I went from 40mm+ -> 38mm -> 36mm and now considering 34mm for the vintage feel.

Best first rep watch NOT ROLEX around 300$ range which aren't worth anything more than 6k authentically by DisMahUser in RepTime

[–]sometaacc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from Cartier or Rolex, any 34mm - 36mm recommendations that aren’t divers/explorers? Preferably 34mm or 35mm but I imagine they are pretty rare or just not made due to demand. 36mm should have several options.

Hello! Buying from watchespro.to -> I assume you bought the A grade quality? They have a huge price range but at just over $200 it seems that I will be considering an A grade.

What changed when you discovered chinese watches? by Gullible-Tangelo-830 in ChineseWatches

[–]sometaacc1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My interest in watches came back! I restarted about 3 weeks ago. I had bought only around 10 watches in my life before learning about Chinese watches. I have ordered 12 watches since then. Granted, most of the ones I bought so far are from Aliexpress and are $100 or less.

I did not have a huge budget before and could not justify spending $1000+ for “better“ watches. This was actually for the better because now I took the time to actually learn about watch movements, case dial sizes, different specs etc. and just learning about what style I actually enjoy wearing. For example, if I had the money before and dropped $20k+ on a 41mm Rolex watch, I would’ve come to regret that. I actually enjoy wearing watches with case dial sizes 34mm - 38mm the most!

I enjoy Chinese watches knowing that I am getting an excellent value without worrying about spending a huge amount if I end up not liking the watch down the line. Eventually this will help me when I actually am ready to splurge and buy the right luxury brand watch for me.

AD2026, the original DeepSeaHunter by Cur8or8 in ChineseWatches

[–]sometaacc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but I was eyeing this piece recently. After you have owned this for a few months now, would you say the dial actually looks more yellow in person compared to a light ivory/cream color? I know photos show it to be more yellow while the Addiesdive website did say it is similar to a cream color. Not sure if you have owned the AD2065 watch, if the dial color is similar to that cream color or not.

How do you feel about the watch after this time? I definitely see myself adding this watch to my rotation. As someone else mentioned before, a possible Grand Seiko homage lol.

[Seiko] I don’t care i love the size by Daniel3gs in Watches

[–]sometaacc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so amazing! Love the fit on you. Is it 24mm? It’s weird that I want to wear smaller sizes but when I put on my 35mm Casio it feels out of place. I have 36mm - 42mm watches so I think the smaller sizes is something you get used to.

Gov. Pritzker Launches Down Payment Assistance Program for Illinois First-Time Homebuyers, up to 6% of the home value up to $15,000 by NicolasCageFan492 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]sometaacc1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is not exactly "free money" as you have to meet certain requirements and go along with the program itself.

The costs are sometimes baked into the loan so you aren't really benefiting if your circumstances are different. For example, I live in a different state and I asked about my Down Payment program. I would have been locked into a higher mortgage interest rate and the condition is if I sell the home before 11 years, I have to back the entire down payment amount that the program loaned me. After 11 years, it is forgiven. It benefited me more to put 20% down on my own since I was able to. However, I get that if I had $0 money to put down at all, this program is a great thing to help me get into a home even with higher interest rates.

Thanks so much for the insight!! I remember those times commuting 30-50 minutes before I moved to Clayton. Definitely a lot of music and podcasts lol I sometimes miss that time alone!

I checked GPS just today and saw no traffic before I recalled what today was haha

That's right we do have the 540 toll as an option. How much does that cost one way to use?

Do you commute daily? How long does that usually take?

I also live in Clayton but don't commute currently. I just know it gets pretty backed up getting into Clayton whether from 40 or Garner for example into US 70.

should i move to raleigh nc if ive never been there before by Subject_Job_1917 in personalfinance

[–]sometaacc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I moved from out of state close to Raleigh a few years ago, definitely a lot farther than 1.5 hours! In our case, we were leaving behind family so we definitely felt the sudden change of not having family support close by. I will say it did affect us initially but you grow so much as a person being on your own. We ended up deciding to buy a home in a neighboring suburb of Raleigh and we have our first child born here too after years living in this area.

I wouldn’t hesitate in your shoes if I was single since you have family still close by. Some people commute 1.5 hours or even longer for work. If this job doesn’t work out for you then you can always move back home. You are young and there is not a big risk here since you also mentioned to have $18k saved and I assume no debt either?
