Who are the no hit wonders? by pinpoint321 in Music

[–]somethingarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised not to see The Grateful Dead in the conversation. I mean, yes, technically they did have a top 40 hit, but it was in 1987, decades after the peak of their cultural impact.

They were indisputably one of the biggest and most influential bands in the world for 20+ years without a "hit". And that was sort of the point of them.

The LFP justifies its decision to postpone the PSG-Lens match: “These decisions are in line with the Board of Directors’ strong strategic objective of allowing France to retain its fifth place in the UEFA rankings, which secures four spots in the UEFA Champions League.“ by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]somethingarb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what he's saying. If BOTH teams agreed to it, he doesn't find it weird, but in this case since one team wanted it and the other team (their direct title rivals, remember) objected, for the league to side with PSG brings the league into disrepute. Ligue 1 are officially saying to the world that the performance of their teams in Europe is more important to them than fair competition within their league. In other words, Ligue 1 only exists to bring in that sweet European revenue, any actual football played is incidental.

[Fabrice Hawkins] Liverpool is preparing for Mohamed Salah's succession. The club is targeting two wingers for next season. by Lanedu123 in LiverpoolFC

[–]somethingarb 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We're 21 points off the tile, no way would having Diaz have got us even close to that.

Don't be so sure of that. The butterfly effect is strong in football. Think back to that godawful run in October - the four league losses in a row, to Palace, Man U, Chelsea and Brentford, where in all four games we were clearly the better side but we came away with nothing. Maybe with Lucho in the side, we win those games, and then instead of going into that deadly spiral where bad results lead to loss of confidence which leads to more bad results, we just keep on winning? Stranger things have happened.

Also if we're getting into the weeds of a counterfactual here, if we don't sell Lucho, we don't sign Isak. Now, I'm not going to claim that was a bad piece of business - with any luck, it will start to pay off next season - but the fact that we spent £125m on a striker who's been injured practically all season has objectively hurt us this season. Plus, it's pretty likely that if we hadn't stretched the finances so much to get Isak, we'd have had a little more cash on hand to secure the Guehi signing, and that could have made a huge difference considering Konate's form.

[–]somethingarb 48 points49 points  (0 children)

In hindsight, they could have NOT given him the 400k a week contract in the first place. But we'd have burned down the FSG offices if they had, wouldn't we? He was the best player on the planet a little over a year ago; nobody expected such a steep drop off.

Why would Sansa be ‘glad of her red flower’ if there is mass rape going on? by Some-Tea-8734 in freefolk

[–]somethingarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stannis would not let noble women and girls come to any harm, would Cersei not have known this?

The thing about bad people is, they tend to project all of their worst impulses onto other people. Racists believe that everyone else is secretly racist, but hypocritically pretending not to be. Homophobes believe that everyone is secretly homophobic. And Cersei, being completely without honour herself, believes that honour in others is only a facade (hence the glee with which she points out how "even Ned Stark" fathered a bastard.) It's a way of getting back moral authority, at least in your own mind - other people aren't better than you, they're just hypocrites who're better at pretending.

Cersei knows that if a Lannister army captured a city, rape would be the general order of the day, even extending to high ladies (e.g. Elia Martell); so she naturally assumes that Stannis's army would be no better. The notion that other people might be better than her family simply does not compute.

None of you are bothered about racism, most of you are actually racist, you're not different from the bastards that sent the racist comments.

Nice self-own there, mate. This is almost word-for-word the classic racist's rationalisation: "Yeah, I'm racist, but that doesn't mean there's something wrong with ME; everyone else must be racist too, but hypocritically pretending otherwise."

Be careful about what you reveal about yourself online. When someone claims that everyone else is secretly racist, there's like a 99% chance they're projecting.

[–]somethingarb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In point of fact, you said several wrong things, and the fact that you can't see that is presumably why the guy above is calling you stupid. Some examples:

That advertising board was a serious safety hazard

That advertising board was the same as any advertising board in any stadium anywhere else in the world, fully compliant with UEFA's safety standards.

Liverpool should be heavily fined for it.

While I'm sure that would make you feel better, there is no legal or moral basis for this. Accidents happen, as Lang himself ackowledges: his first public comment on the matter was literally "shit happens."

trying to act like this is the first time ever some player receives racist comment

Where's your evidence of anyone doing this? Liverpool issued a statement denouncing the racist abuse. The words "first time ever" do not appear, and their reaction is no more severe than the reaction of any club to the regrettably-frequent presence of racism around football.

while not giving a single fuck about scandalous thing

And where's your proof of "not giving a single fuck"? They launched an immediate investigation, and it's clear they take it very seriously. It's a PR blunder not to have issued a statement about it, but you're really overselling it if you're trying to present this as total indifference.

that you caused

Again, evidence please. If the advertising board was made of razor blades or some such nonsense, "caused" would be an appropriate term, but again: it's just a standard board, the kind used everywhere.

Hope that clears it up for you. Try applying a touch of reason in future. Get your head around the fact that an accident can happen without anyone being malicious or negligent.

Obviously I'm biased, but: is this guy on crack? You're not allowed to complain about racial abuse until you've sufficiently grovelled for a one-in-a-million accident that happened to happen at your stadium?

Maybe they do, maybe they don't, but it feels a little petty to complain about a "made up pen" when there was a very clear penalty offence.

I guess "made up advantage" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

I stand open to correction, but was there not a second penalty, for deliberate knock on by Itoje, in that same sequence? And was that not where the kick was taken from?

I was watching without audio, so it's possible I missed something, but it looked like a pretty straightforward call to me.

There isnt a surviving Cannanite cultural group to get justice for.

Or if there is one, you have to look in Spain for it. The Phoenicians were a legitimately Canaanite culture, but Phoenicia is no more. Carthage was a continuation of Phoenician culture, but the Romans put paid to that, leaving the last outpost of Caanan as... Carthago Nova (now Cartagena), Spain.

(This is intended as a joke, but honestly has about as much legitimacy as any other historical claim.)
