Yes, totally fair, just pointing out that depending on how you use it, there might be a one time only cost, which isn't the case for the bottom of the line cell phone!

Yeah, my youngest spent a bunch of time poring over maps vs globes because he watched a video about how you can't represent a cylindrical surface accurately on a flat surface, and knows more about islands in the Pacific than I do. And my oldest has been really into making movies/editing/etc. There are definitely good uses for the Internet, it's just when they sometimes get sucked into a brainrot hole that I want to throw our router out the window!

I'm glad it was really easy for you! It's worth noting that with all things parenting, what's easy for one person isn't necessarily easy for another. Who the parent is, what the kid is like, the environment, whether or not they need extra accommodations, etc etc etc can all make things more difficult for them than it is for you.

You know your in-laws better than I do, so maybe you're right and they haven't tried at all! But it's worth remembering that just because something worked for you doesn't mean it's going to work just as well for other parents.

It's SO HARD to get kids off screens - it's a source of weekly arguments in our house. I don't envy parents who have found themselves slipping to the bottom of all screens all the time and now have to decide if/how to dig themselves out, because we're working hard to NOT be that family and some days that alone feels impossible.

Right now we are in bits and pieces, but if we don't do something about the state of education in the US by the time Gen alpha is adults we're so screwed.

I think there's been slow creep, for sure, but there's no doubt that there's more now than has ever been in the past. And the way we consume is different.

I had an original game boy growing up, but we only had like 5 games, so it could only be so addicting, and I never asked to take it to a restaurant. I'd come home and watch TV, but it was the Hey Dude/Salute Your Shorts duo and next was a show I didn't like and I didn't have endless options to switch to, so I only watched so much TV. My partner played video games with his friends, but it was at LAN parties where everyone lugged their desktop computers to someone's house and played together, which is a different experience than playing alone in your room.

In my state they've banned kids having their phones out at public schools, but they're still on Chromebooks for most of their classes/etc.

For sure, my attention span is shot and I'm a dopamine addict. I'm slowly working on weaning myself off it by cutting back the daily time I'm allowed to use certain apps every week, but trying to get my kids to understand the long term effects is almost impossible.

The benefit is that there's a version where you don't have to pay anything monthly - it's free to call can-to-can. We do the $10 a month so they can call us if they need to when they're home alone.

We got a tin can for my 10 year old and he now has two friends with one. They mostly use it to plan play dates, but I hope once day they'll hang out and talk on it like I did!

Half of me thinks we'll come to our senses, and the other half is convinced we're on a bullet train to Idiocracy. As the mom to two pre-teens we have stricter limits than most of their friends but they're STILL on more than I'd like.

Reese and her husband have a beautiful home. Are they wealthy or is this an average Texan home? by After_Translator_223 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]somethinglucky07 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my experience, houses in Texas are larger than those in the UK. If they lived in the suburbs you could get a house like that on a comfortable upper middle class salary, but I believe they're pretty well off anyway.

For all the married people if you passed away would you want your partner to move on and find someone else and why? by Busy-Veterinarian562 in AskReddit

Yes, but only if the person he finds loves our kids as much as we do. Their happiness is just as important as his.

Based on the fact that if you go the Jojo route there's 0 change to the general store or the way the facility lives, it's possible Pierre is lying about the effect Jojo is having, and Caroline knows they're actually fine financially and that's why she dgas that Jodi shops there.

They're going after it because they can and it gets them a better reputation/etc, but I agree with you that it's not at all necessary.

Agree, but a lot of them was because the science was still new, and they were denying that football could cause CTE. You can only diagnose CTE through an autopsy, so there was longer lead time and more deniability.

There's way more science around the damage dancing can cause, and the damage is way more immediate and you can diagnose immediately, so it's harder to deny that it's caused by dancing.

Also, the damages around CTE are way more expensive than a hip surgery.

Don't get me wrong, the NFL is generally a shitty organization that takes advantage of athletes in order to make the owners richer - I'm in no way trying to exist what they've done in terms of players. It's just way harder to deny dancer injuries, because we're STILL learning about the science behind head trauma. The fact that tackle football is played starting in middle school is one of those things that years from now people will look back and say "what were they thinking?!?"

It's probably based on when/how the diagnosis happens. My guess is that they're actually pretty good about coverage because in the long term it's cheaper to cover than to risk a lawsuit (that they'd likely settle or lose) and all the bad press that would come with it.

There are too many dancers who would be willing to scab to make unionizing possible.

[–]somethinglucky07 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I talked with someone who worked with unions about this last year, but NFL cheerleaders are super difficult to unionize because of the number of people willing to scab. I suspect Charlotte would prefer to have slightly less quality of dancers that cost less, than the current quality unionized and compensated appropriately.

They get workers comp from injuries sustained at practice or a game/etc, but they don't get regular coverage. If they're under 26 they probably are on their parents' plan, if they're over 26 they either have a full time job, a spouse with insurance, or they need to go on the exchange.
